Field Hockey Upsets #10 Hamilton

The Mules earned a statement win in their lone matchup of the week Saturday morning, defeating nationally ranked Hamilton 5-2 on Bill Alfond Field.

Colby came out flying, scoring three goals in the first seven minutes. Christina Sweeney opened the scoring just 1:41 into the game before Bridget Everett and Bridget Waters each added goals to give the Mules a 3–0 lead early in the first quarter.

Hamilton cut the deficit to 3–1 late in the first, but Sweeney struck again midway through the second quarter to make it 4–1 heading into halftime. Sweeney completed her hat trick in the fourth quarter, bringing her season total to eight goals (tied second most in the NESCAC), and pushing Colby’s lead to 5–1 before the Continentals added a late goal. Molly Mitchell tallied two assists in the contest and Abby Morrill added one.

Despite Hamilton outshooting Colby 33–10, goalkeeper Ginna Jacoby had a day recording a career-high 21 saves in net to earn NESCAC player of the week honors. The 21 saves marks the most in the conference this season and ranks among the top 10 individual performances in Division III this year. Jacoby currently sits atop the NESCAC in saves per game averaging 7.29.

With the victory, Colby improves to 3–6 and will remain at home this weekend hosting Middlebury and Southern Maine.

Mules Buckle Down, Take Out Bates in Overtime

The Colby Football team took the first leg of the CBB with a 13-6 overtime win in Lewiston. The Mules have now won seven straight against Bates, with each of the last three contests separated by a single score.

Colby got on the board first with an opening quarter Will Schneider field goal. The Bobcats evened the score with a field goal of their own early in the second, sending the game to the half tied at three.

Bates tallied next, another field goal with one minute left in the third quarter. A fourth quarter fumble by the Bobcats deep in Colby's end with under nine minutes to play set up the Mules for a 20-play, 67-yard drive that lasted over eight minutes. Schneider's second field goal of the game capped the drive and forced the extra frame.

In overtime Miles Drake connected with Jack Duffy to get inside the five, and found Henry Emswiler a play later for the go ahead score. Bates fell short in their attempt to force a second overtime, with three straight passes broken up in the end zone to end the game.

Schneider was named NESCAC Special Teams Player of the Week and Ameer White was named Defensive Player of the Week. White hauled in his third interception of the season to halt a Bates drive in the second quarter just outside the red zone, forced the fumble to set up the game-tying drive, and had two pass breakups including one of the final three in the end zone.

The 2-2 Mules return to Mayflower Hill next weekend to face the 3-1 Cardinals from Wesleyan University. Game time is set for 1:30pm on Saturday.

Women’s Soccer Defeats Hamilton 2-0

Colby, with just a single loss on the schedule so far this season, continued its strong campaign on Saturday with a shutout win over the Continentals.

The Mules controlled play early, outshooting Hamilton 11–3 in the first half. Off a corner kick, Avery Barton opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with her first goal of the season to give Colby a 1–0 lead at halftime.

Abigail Jarvi doubled the advantage in the 64th minute, finishing a pass from Madison Genser for her team-leading sixth goal of the season (tied second most in the NESCAC). MK Marshall and Sadie Gardner split the time in net combining for three saves in the shutout.

Colby is now 3–1–2 in the NESCAC (5-1-3 overall) head to Husson on Tuesday before hosting Middlebury on Saturday. The Mules and Panthers are currently tied in third place in the conference standings.

Cross Country Light Up Trails at Keene State

The Men's and Women's Cross Country teams cruised to third place finishes (out of 26 teams) at the Keene State Invitational. Catherine Mongan paced the women with a 7th place finish in the field of 288 competitors. Chris Gould (11th), Henry Reichle (15th), and Danny Reyes (20th) made it three in the top-20 for the men's team in the field of 277.

Colby has two more weekends of racing before heading to Conn. College in early November for the NESCAC Championship.

Volleyball Moves to 13-1 with Sweeps of Hamilton, Amherst

The Colby Volleyball team made quick work of Hamilton and Amherst this weekend, turning both NESCAC foes away with 3-0 sweeps.

Brady Moseley led the charge Friday night against the Continentals. The junior tallied her eighth double-digit kill performance in the last 10 matches, collecting 13 kills, 12 digs, and five blocks. The Mules dominated the third and final set 25-8 with a hitting percentage of 0.522.

Cyanne Jones had a stellar day Saturday against the Mammoths. The sophomore led Colby in kills (9) and blocks (7) while also frustrating Amherst with three of Colby's eight aces.

Colby (3-1 in NESCAC) hits the road next weekend for a pivotal series against Williams and Middlebury. The Ephs and the Panthers are tied in the standings just ahead of the Mules with 4-1 conference records.

Men’s Soccer Plays to Scoreless Draw with Hamilton

Colby earned a point in NESCAC play Saturday afternoon with a 0–0 draw hosting the Continentals.

The Mules generated several early chances and held a 5–3 shot advantage in the first half, but neither side was able to break through.

Hamilton pushed in the second half with six shots, including four on target, but Jackson Magee came up with saves on each to secure the shutout.

With the result, the Mules move to 4–3–3 on the season and are set to host the Middlebury Panthers Saturday in their lone match of the week.

Mules Compete in ITA Regionals

The Colby Men’s Tennis team traveled to Medford, Mass. over the weekend for the three day ITA Regional Tournament.

To highlight the event for the Mules, Jason Daly defeated two NESCAC foes in the main singles bracket, one from Trinity in the round of 64 (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) and one from Wesleyan in the round of 32 (6-7(3), 6-0, 6-3). Daly then came up short to an opponent from Middlebury in a tight round of 16 matchup to conclude his run.

In the singles B draw both Diego Sosa and Antonio Lee picked up opening round victories before falling in the next round. Sosa dominated in his round of 64 win 8-0, and Lee picked up his victory 8-4.

Men’s Tennis will conclude their fall season at Bates’ Wallach invitational taking place October 11th and 12th.

Crew Opens Fall Season at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta

For the fourth consecutive year, the Colby Men’s and Women’s Crew team began the fall season in Worcester, Mass. with the historic race on Lake Quinsigamond. The Mules had seven total boats on the water throughout Saturday's events and with flat water, minimal winds, and sunny skies Colby had ideal racing conditions.

To highlight the day, the Men’s A V8 crew finished in 5th place with a time of 13:48.6, the second DIII boat to cross the finish line. The 2V8 crew finished just 11 seconds behind Colby's top boat (8th place) while the 3V8 rounded out the results for the Mules in the collegiate Men’s eight event in 13th (14:39.0)

On the Women’s side of competition Colby had two crews race in the Collegiate Eight event. The V8 boat finishing in 8th place securing a time of 15:38.1 while the 2V8 found themselves in 18th following a time of 16:38.6.

Both the men and women had a collegiate four crew competing as well with the Men’s earning a 4th place finish (16:16.7) and the Women’s settling for 15th (19:48.9).

Up next, Colby Crew will travel to Cambridge, Mass. for the Head of Charles Regatta beginning October 18th.

Golf Caps Fall Season at USM

The Colby Golf team placed third in Saturday's 10-team USM Husky Classic. Johnny Kinsley shot an even par to finish fifth, and all five scorers placed inside the top-15 in the 51-person field.

The Mules will shelve their clubs for the winter targeting the NESCAC Championship at Trinity in April.
