Construction Updates: Māngere West Cycling Improvements
Construction of the Māngere West Cycling Improvements is well underway. Our contractors are usually working in two sections at once. This approach helps us deliver the work more quickly by focusing our efforts and means disruption will be limited to one or two sections at a time.
Please note timelines and staging plans are indicative and may change.
Stage One works are 90% complete.
Kiwi Esplanade & Woodward Avenue:
What's completed?
- Traffic calming measures have been installed.
- what's left to do: New street lighting is awaiting connection by Vector
Coronation Road (between Hastie Avenue and 146 Coronation Road):
✅ What's completed?
- A New bus drop-off zone for Māngere Education Centre
- New and upgraded bus stops
- Road markings for the new two-way cycleway.
- what's left to do : Installing concrete separators for the new cycleway to safely separate people on bikes from traffic — this is expected to happen in May
Stage Two: main works outside Māngere Bridge School now complete
Coronation Road and Taylor Road are now open for two way traffic!
✅ What's completed?
- A New pedestrian crossing at the corner of Taylor Road and Coronation road outside The Gaff Cafe
- A New shared path for people biking and walking outside Māngere Bridge School
- What's left to do? Installing the final concrete cycleway separators along the new shared path.
Stage Three works are underway
Construction is going well which means we are able to kick off planned works for stage three ahead of our original May schedule.
Where? Work has started from Black Bridge Reserve to Ventura Street on Bader Drive. This work involves
- Extending the two way cycle way from Coronation Road to Bader Drive
- Upgrades at Walmsley Road & McKenzie Road intersection
- Footpath improvements
- Bus stop relocation
Where construction is moving next?
Once we finish work at the McKenzie Road end of Bader Drive, we’ll start construction along Bader Drive heading towards Māngere Town Centre. Traffic will still flow both ways along Bader Drive while we work. However, when we’re working near the Elmdon Street and Comet Crescent intersections, there will be short detours for drivers turning in or out of these side streets onto Bader Drive.
What we’re building:
- Two-way protected cycleway
- New raised pedestrian and cycle crossing at the corner of Elmdon Street and Comet Crescent
- Upgrading bus stops
- Improving footpaths and kerb build-outs
Why we’re doing this: To make it safer and easier for people walking and cycling — and to connect the new cycleway to Māngere Town Centre, Moyle Park path, and the SH20 cycleway to the airport.
We understand that construction can be disruptive, particularly around schools and key traffic routes. Traffic may be slower at times, and we truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we carry out this important mahi to improve transport options for our community.
🛠️ He Pātai, He Whakautu – This Month’s Most Asked Question❓
Q: "What’s going on with the line marking at the Coronation Road and Dunstall Place intersection? It’s confusing to drive through"
A: Thanks to everyone who’s been in touch. We’ve received a lot of feedback from the community and residents about the line marking at this intersection. Our team has been on site, and in response:
- We’ve made some slight changes to the centre line marking to help reduce confusion for drivers.
- Our contractors, Traffica, have already made these changes.
- Please note that some old line markings (also known as ghost marks) from the previous layout may still be faintly visible - especially in wet weather.
- Traffica will be returning soon to remove these old markings along Coronation Road.
If you’re passing through the area, please take extra care and drive safely. We really appreciate your feedback - it helps us improve the way we deliver projects. If you have any further questions, feel free to email us at ATprojects@at.govt.nz
Streets for People: Coronation Road Phase Two Trial Results
See Māngere's vision for a safer and connected cycling network
Have Your Say on the Māngere to Favona Link : Walking & Cycling Improvements
Consultation is open for feedback from Monday 12 May 2025 and closes on Monday 9 June 2025.
The Māngere to Favona Link (FL) is stage one of the Māngere East Cycling Improvements. The proposed route aims to make it easier and safer for people on bikes to get to important destinations throughout Māngere and nearby suburbs. This includes sports fields at Māngere Centre Park, shops at Māngere Town Center, David Lange Park, local marae and several schools, churches along the way.
The Māngere to Favona Link is an important connection that sets the foundation for stage two — which aims to extend the cycling network to Ōtāhuhu Station, Middlemore Hospital, and Papatoetoe. Consultation on stage two is planned for 2026.
🚧 Permanent upgrades coming to Māngere East – replacing the 2021 trial pop-up improvements
In 2021, Auckland Transport partnered with the Māngere East community to trial temporary street calming measures through the Innovating Streets for People programme. These included features like speed humps, raised crossings, planter boxes, and colourful street art — all designed to create safer, more welcoming spaces for tamariki, kaumātua, and everyone walking or biking.
Based on the positive outcomes of the trial, permanent street upgrades are now on the way, with construction expected to begin in late 2025.
The permanent improvements will take place along:📍 Yates Road, Ferguson Street, Royton Avenue, and parts of Chalfont Street and Chadwick Crescent
