VE Day celebrations!

Here are some photos from KS1’s VE day games – the children played hopscotch, bean bag toss, snakes and ladders, and many more. They absolutely loved taking part in the games. Cygnet’s children also listened to some music from around the time of VE day and for their PE lesson that week they learnt some of the dances from that era.

Tadpoles had a fantastic day celebrating the 80th anniversary of VE Day with lots of activities. They enjoyed fine motor skill tasks with hammers and tweezers, with red, white and blue pegs. They enjoyed decorating biscuits.

Tadpoles listened to 1940s music, danced, and happily ate their biscuits. The day concluded with a two-minute silence to honour and remember all those who served and lost their lives in wars.

The children in Frogs enjoyed celebrating VE day with a party. They decorated their own biscuits, celebrated with juice and then all took to the dancefloor for a dance to The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy by the Andrew sisters.
Otters enjoying traditional games
On 8th May 1945, people in Britain and across the world celebrated Victory in Europe, now known as VE Day. To mark the 80th anniversary we played games, from that time, which included hopscotch, snakes and ladders and battleships. We held a 2 minute silence to honour the millions who died or were wounded and to those who survived, including families and communities that were forever changed by the war.

Tadpoles

As part of our growing topic this term, the children in Tadpoles enjoyed exploring the school's wildlife area and surrounding gardens.

They were on the lookout for signs of blossom and discovered beautiful pink and white blossoms growing on trees. Inspired by what they saw, the children used their fingers to create their own blossom tree artwork, bringing a touch of spring into the classroom.

Frogs

The reception children have been developing their maths skills by adding 10p, 5p and 2p coins together in Pilgrim Garden Centre.

Cygnets

In Science this term, Cygnets have been learning about electricity. They have learnt about different electrical appliances, things that use batteries and how to be safe around electricity.

The children really enjoyed bringing in their own toys to look at the different types of batteries and the number of batteries different toys use.

Dragonflies

This half term we have been looking at what life was like for children in Kenya. We wrote our information, organising it under sub-headings.

Swans

This month we have been working on measurement, volume and capacity in maths. We have been discussing what these are and how we can apply our skills and think like a mathematician.

We have been looking at the story 'Man on the Moon' this term, and the children have loved pretending to be astronauts and learning lots of fun facts about them. We have done lots of different writing styles such as a poster for advertising and fact files about what we have learnt.

We have been working on our Year 2 SATs this term and the children have worked so hard on these. We are very proud of them.

During the afternoons we have been learning about space travel and the United Kingdom. The children have enjoyed learning lots about Neil Armstrong and the space race, as well as key information about where we live in the UK and what special landmarks there are in our capital city.

We are looking forward to learning even more about space travel and moving our learning on in geography to Australia. We are also excited to be learning about our new story 'Claude in the City' by Alex T Smith.

Thank you

Otters

Otters have been learning about Impressionist art, and how paintings do not always have to look real. They have spent time creating their own replica of Claude Monet’s Waterlilies.

In Design and Technology, we have been learning about pavilions. We spent time learning about frame structures and investigating what made a solid frame structure by using marshmallows and cocktail sticks. There were a few tall ones! Our learning was then used to design and build a pavilion of purpose, before we created these in groups.

Turtles

Turtles have been learning all about VE day on its 80th anniversary. We also had fun playing games to commemorate VE day celebrations. We split into teams and played ‘pick up sticks’ and ‘tiddly winks'. We made our own banners and window decorations before heading out and playing, chalk-drawn hopscotch and snakes and ladders outdoors. What a great afternoon we had, we even managed 2 minutes of silence (yes all of us!)

We also say goodbye and thank you for Miss Hilton, who has been working in Turtles.

Orcas

Orcas have worked extremely hard towards the SATs test this half term and should be proud of their effort and commitment to their learning.

In the wider curriculum, Orcas have been working on Music Chrome Lab, to create their own music with percussion; designing their own futuristic computer in computing; and experimenting with circuits in science.

Blue Whales

What a busy half-term for Blue Whales; not only have we have worked incredibly hard in English and maths preparing for the SATs tests, but have also put so much energy and enthusiasm into all other areas of the curriculum.

In science children showcased their knowledge and design skills by creating a beautiful double page spread on the evolutionary ideas of Charles Darwin, and demonstrated how to combine both design and ingenuity to create an architectural masterpiece (a sky scraper) in art.

As geographers, we used our map skills and locational knowledge to identify the main features of North America and then channelled our inner musicians to create beats and rhymes using Chrome Music Lab. As an end of SATs treat, all Blue Whales enjoyed an afternoon filled with movies, games and popcorn!

Goodbye Mrs King

We say goodbye to Mrs King from Frogs class, who is moving on to a new adventure.

Thank you for all that you have done for us at Pilgrim, and good luck in your new job!
