Principal's Message
Welcome to this edition of our school newsletter.
I’d like to start by addressing some recent uncertainty among parents regarding the idea of extending the mid-year school holidays to three weeks. I know there has been some wider community chatter about this possibility. To clarify, the Director General of Education recently confirmed on ABC Radio that term dates are already set through to 2028, with no plans or current discussions to increase the July break beyond the existing two weeks. I hope this helps reassure families as they plan ahead.
In this newsletter, you’ll also find important updates about our school, including highlights from the recent Parent–Teacher Meetings, survey results, and upcoming events. Thank you as always for your ongoing support of our school community.
National Schools Opinion Survey - Parents, Staff and Students
In keeping with our commitment to transparency and continuous improvement, I am pleased to share with you the results of our recent National School Opinion Surveys (NSOS) for parents, staff, and students. These surveys provide valuable feedback that helps us understand what we’re doing well and where we need to focus our efforts to make our school an even better place for learning and student growth and support.
Over the past month, parents, staff, and students had the opportunity to share their views on a range of topics, including teaching and learning quality, student wellbeing, communication, and school culture. We are grateful to everyone who took the time to provide this feedback.
We have prepared bulletins summarising the key findings for each group (please click on each link below):
- Parent Survey - results highlight your perspectives on communication, school facilities, and the quality of education your children receive.
- Staff Survey - results reflect the experiences of our team in relation to professional support, leadership, and school improvement priorities.
- Student Survey - results provide insight into how our students feel about engagement, safety, and the learning environment.
These findings are essential to our planning. They help us celebrate our successes while also identifying areas where we can implement meaningful changes. We are already using this data to inform our school priorities and planning.
I encourage you to look and see how your voice, and the voices of our staff and students are helping shape the future of our school.
Mount Lawley Network of Schools
The Mount Lawley Network of Schools is a group of local public schools (8 primary and 1 secondary) that work together to provide better connected teaching and learning, more empowered and supported leadership, and positive and productive relationships. By collaborating, we aim to provide a smooth and supportive educational journey for all students from early childhood through to secondary schooling.
Please click here for the Mount Lawley Network Strategic Plan 2025-2027. This document outlines our shared priorities and focus areas across the network. It's a useful reference as we align our school planning with broader network goals.
Mount Lawley Network Presents Dr Justin Coulson - Resilience in Kids
As part of the Mount Lawley Network's commitment to coordinating targeted learning opportunities for parents, we are pleased to offer the chance to come and listen to renowned parent expert Dr Justin Coulson talk about resilience and developing strength, calm and kindness in our kids.
All North Perth staff, along with Network schools will be attending a session with Justin earlier in the day entitled 'Attitude is Everything'.
Staff Feedback on Parent/Teacher Meetings
Our recent parent/teacher meetings saw approximately 85% parent attendance across the school.
We recently surveyed our teachers about the recent parent/teacher meetings. Teachers rated the question “How much do you value Parent/Teacher Meetings” at 7.9 out of 10, highlighting the importance we all place on these opportunities to connect and support student learning. You can see a summary of all the teacher feedback below.
What teachers value about Parent/Teacher Meetings
- Parent-teacher meetings in upper primary are a valuable opportunity to connect with families we don't often see.
- They foster open communication, allow us to share student progress, set future learning goals, and answer parent questions.
- These face-to-face discussions help build relationships, align school and home perspectives, and ensure parents are informed ahead of reports.
- Teachers also appreciate learning from parents’ insights and celebrating student achievements across the full spectrum—not just for those needing extra support.
- The meetings are purposeful, efficient, and help strengthen the home-school partnership.
What would make them even better?
- Consider holding meetings earlier in the term (e.g. Week 5)
- Allocate more time for each meeting (more than 10 minutes), ensuring sufficient time is given to present and discuss student data
- Include specialist teachers in the schedule
- Hold meetings during school hours where possible
- Upper primary suggested including students in meetings
- Some staff felt current structure (half-day with 10-minute slots) works well
- Acknowledge staff workloads, especially those with many meetings
We Value Your Feedback
Thank you for attending our recent Parent–Teacher Meetings. We’re always looking to improve the way we connect and communicate with families. Please take a moment to share your thoughts and experiences. Your feedback helps us make future meetings even more meaningful and effective.

Parking Issues and Solutions
I’d like to acknowledge the feedback we’ve received from parents about the ongoing parking challenges around our school. We understand how frustrating this can be, especially during busy drop-off and pick-up times.
Please know that our School Board are aware, and the Grounds Committee and school are actively exploring solutions. One proposal has already been submitted to the Department of Education to allocate additional onsite parking for staff, which would help free up more space around the school for families.
We’re also continuing to look for other ways to reduce the impact on community parking. Next month, the Grounds Committee will be meeting with Mayor Alison Xamon to discuss the issue further, and we raised it last Friday with our Local Member, John Carey. We’ll keep you updated on any progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work to improve this for everyone.
Have a safe and enjoyable break.

Disco
What a fantastic night we had at our recent Under the Sea disco! It was wonderful to see so many students dancing, laughing, and enjoying the fun theme. A huge thank you to all the parents and our amazing P&C who made it possible—especially Kat Pagano for her incredible work in bringing it all together. Events like this really show the strength of our school community.
Onsite Services
Our school supports a range of onsite services, including speech therapy, occupational therapy, and other outside agencies that use our facilities to work with students. We already facilitate these services where we can and are committed to supporting students in the best way possible. If you have a request or would like to discuss options, please feel free to speak with our school administration. We’re always here to help ensure our students get the support they need.
Sensory Room
Our Sensory Room is a dedicated space designed to support students with their self-regulation and sensory needs. This wonderful addition to our school has been made possible through the generous donations of our community.
The room is used by a variety of teachers, education assistants, and specialist staff to help meet the individual needs of students. It provides a calm, flexible environment where students can take breaks, practise self-regulation strategies, or engage in sensory activities tailored to them. This might include quiet time, movement-based activities, or using specialised equipment to help them refocus and feel ready to learn in class.
We are very grateful to our community for making this space possible, and we look forward to the continued positive impact it will have on our students’ well-being, engagement, and learning outcomes. If you have any questions about the Sensory Room or how it is used, please feel free to reach out.
Edu-Dance Performances
Last week’s two Edu-Dance performances were a fantastic showcase of our students’ talent and hard work. We want to recognise the tremendous effort, practice, and enthusiasm they put in throughout the term. Thank you to everyone who came along to support them, it was wonderful to see our students shine on stage.
Visual Arts
In Art this term students have been all working hard on some beautiful artworks inspired by Indigenous Australians and the land we live on. We have made postcards, paintings and drawings, and have learned lots of new skills and techniques. Hopefully you can make it to our NAIDOC Assembly on Friday where you will be able to see our artworks on display.
Students also had a whale of a time making collaborative Under The Sea themed decorations for the disco. We used recycled and reusable materials to make our fish and jellyfish. It was fun to repurpose cardboard from our 125th Project sculpture and make it into something new.
Music – Term Reflection 🎶
As we come to the end of a vibrant and musical term, it's a pleasure to reflect on the many exciting and enriching experiences our students have enjoyed in the Music program.
Opera Comes to School!
This term, our Pre-Primary to Year 3 students were treated to a magical incursion by Freeze Frame Opera, who brought the classic tale of Goldilocks to life through a lively operatic performance. The students were captivated by the storytelling, costumes, and music, gaining a delightful introduction to the world of opera and live performance.
Junior Music Explorations
Our junior classes have been busy learning songs that help support their social and emotional development—using music as a powerful tool to explore emotions, empathy, and teamwork. They’ve also been hands-on with un-tuned percussion instruments, experimenting with sounds and learning to improvise together. These creative sessions have encouraged self-expression and active listening, laying a strong foundation for future musical learning.
Senior Musical Development
Senior classes have been working on refining their rhythm and melodic skills through a range of engaging activities. They’ve particularly enjoyed playing Boomwhackers—colorful tuned percussion tubes—which have helped reinforce pitch relationships, coordination, and ensemble playing in a fun and interactive way.
Cultural Connections through Music
In recognition of Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week, all students have been learning songs in the Noongar language. This term, we explored 'Wanjoo', 'Sorry Song', and 'Bibbulmun Bonar'—each offering a unique opportunity to engage with Noongar culture, language, and stories through song. These experiences continue to help students develop a deeper appreciation and respect for the rich history and traditions of First Nations peoples.
Strings in Action
Another highlight this term was the wonderful incursion from the Mount Lawley Senior High School String Ensemble, who performed for our Year 2 to 6 students. It was an inspiring experience for our young learners to hear live string music and witness the dedication and talent of older students.
It's been a joyful and music-filled term, with so many rich learning opportunities across all year levels. Thank you for your continued support of the Music program—we look forward to even more exciting musical adventures next term!
SCIENCE
Pre -Primary Science
This term during Science, we have been investigating how things move. We have learnt that objects can roll, slide, bounce, be thrown, can run, hop and fly. As a class, we discussed things that float and sink and practised making predictions.
Year 1 Science
In Year 1, we learnt about forces and gravity. We discussed push, pull, strong and weak forces. Through observation, we found lots of areas around our school where we use different forces; in our classroom and out in the playground.
Year 2 Science
In Year 2, we revised push, pull forces and gravity. We made a toy car launcher. We then investigated what happens when we apply different force to a car. As a class, we recorded our results and discussed the importance of a fair test. We made boats to investigate wind as a force. Lastly, we learnt how sound is produced and how it travels.

WINTER PRUNING
As the weather cools and olives have been picked from their trees, early winter is the perfect time to lightly prune your olive tree and prepare it for the next season. Annual pruning is important as it opens up the canopy to increase airflow, improve access, and encourage self-pollination and renewed growth, giving your tree the best chance for abundant flowers in spring and fruit in summer. Because olive trees are naturally biennial bearers, regular pruning also helps even out yields across seasons.
REGISTER YOUR OLIVE TREE
Do you or someone you know in North Perth have a fruiting olive tree? We’re calling for registrations ahead of our 2026 Harvest. If you have a tree that produces olives, register below, and we’ll be in touch when it’s time to pick.

Numbats
Hello Numbats, we hope everyone has had a busy term 2. We had a great afternoon of bowling at Rosemount Bowl in late May. There was some epic strikes, spares and more than a few gutter balls... mostly at the hands of the dads! The turnout was excellent and it was also nice to see some new faces and have a chance to share some ideas about future Numbats events with a few dads. We always welcome constructive feedback on how we can improve what we do and how we connect with our kids. With Term 3 almost upon us we are into the busy part of the year, we know may are now in the throes of weekend sport and finding time to just be with the kids is tricky. Well look no further, Term 3 we are planning a couple events which are easy to get involved and have some fun. On Sunday, August 3rd we will be going indoor rock climbing, time, venue and cost to follow on the chat. At the end of the term on Sunday, September 21st we are planning a bike ride over to Brittania Reserve pump track. Keep an eye on the chat for details on this one as well.
Lastly, we are finalising the plans for this year's camping weekend. The date of the trip will be Friday, October 31st and Saturday, November 1st. We are planning a Halloween theme for the Friday night so keep an eye out for more to follow on that. Save the date, we will be releasing tickets for sale on Sunday the 27th of July through a link posted on the whatsapp chat. If you are not on the chat please send a text to 0410-861-766 and we will add you to the group. Enjoy the holidays and we look forward to seeing you at our next event.
