Whitkirk News! 21st March 2025

A message from Miss Quarmby

What a fantastic week we’ve had! It finally feels like spring is here—what a difference the sunshine makes! Our Year 6 children are away on their residential and are having the best time. The instructors have been full of praise for how polite and well-mannered they are, and I know the whole team is incredibly proud of them! On Thursday, we welcomed colleagues from across the Trust, who were so impressed with our Year 1 children and their learning. They also loved our Art Gallery! It was a brilliant opportunity for Miss Emery to showcase the fantastic practice happening at Whitkirk with the wider Trust. We know many of you have questions about nursery, and we really appreciate your patience. We’re still waiting for further information, but as soon as we know more, we’ll be sure to update you. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Attendance

This week, our overall attendance was 96.86%—above our whole school target! A huge well done to 4JF for achieving the highest attendance at an incredible 98.21%! RLE, 6NT, 1JL, 4AS, 3JC, RJS, 2CH and 2KD also had fantastic attendance this week, all reaching over 96.5%—great job!

Let's take a look AT WHAT'S BEEN GOING ON THIS WEEK

EYFS

This week in Reception, the children have been exploring doubles. The children learned that two equal parts represent a double. The children enjoyed using dice to identify doubles, searching for doubles in the environment and using Numberblocks to represent different representations of doubles! Doubles mania!

Key Stage 1

This week, our Year 1 students have been busy and creative! They explored the world of algorithms by designing mazes on 'Scratch Jr', enhancing their problem-solving skills. In Design & Technology, they crafted beautiful charity pins using felt and sequins, showcasing their artistic talents and dedication to a good cause. It's been a week full of learning and fun!

This week, Year 2 have been learning the running stitch to create their own little blankets. In English, we have published some amazing reports on David Attenborough, showcasing our fantastic writing skills. In Computing, we had lots of fun coding our own knock-knock jokes!

Lower Key Stage 2

What a fantastic week of learning we have had in Year 3! In English, we have been identifying the features of a non-chronological report and in Maths, we have started our topic of fractions. In Science, we explored the role of the sun for light and shadows and in DT, we designed decorations based on our design brief. Finally, we finished the week with an amazing performance of our Egyptian poetry at Whitkirk's 'Poetry Slam'!

To start off our new writing unit the children created their own Greek Monsters and had to argue which of them was most deadly. Next, we are going write descriptions of them. Great messy fun was had with the clay! In PE, we worked on our running stamina and then played agility games with the hurdles. Finally, we have been learning and performing a poem (Theseus and The Minotaur) ready for the poetry slam competition.

Upper Key Stage 2

Year 5 have impressed us with their super construction skills this week. In DT, we designed, discussed practicality of materials and size and made our wooden bridges in small groups. We worked together to measure, cut and assemble our final products using saws and glue guns. We have been impressed with the incredible teamwork skills. Well done Year 5.

Year 6 have certainly had a week to remember! We have had a fantastic time on residential and we can't wait to tell you all about it. Miss Tomlinson, Mrs Hart, Miss Richardson and Ms Din have been truly blown away with the teamwork and resilience that has been shown from so many of our Year 6 pupils! I am sure we will all need lots of sleep now after such a jam-packed few days!
