Colmore Junior School autumn term: week: 9

Highlights of the week

Happy Friday! We're kicking off this newsletter with a really important topic: anti-bullying. This past Monday, November 3rd, I led an assembly using resources from The Anti-Bullying Alliance. It was a vital session to reinforce our commitment to making our school a safe and happy place for everyone. A key part of the assembly was reminding all the children of our school’s shared, simple, and memorable definition of bullying: S.T.O.P. – Several Times On Purpose. We had crucial discussions about the power of communication—how important it is for children to talk to one another and to confidently tell someone if they are unhappy with their words or actions. Don't Forget: Odd Socks Day on Monday! To officially mark the start of Anti-Bullying Week and show that we all stand united against bullying, we are inviting the children to wear odd socks this coming Monday! This is a fun and visual way for us all to celebrate what makes us unique and to send a clear message that everyone belongs. Football Cards While it was lovely to see the children engaging with their collections and sharing them initially, unfortunately, these cards have become a significant distraction during learning time and have led to too many disagreements and arguments during breaks. Therefore, effective immediately, football cards are no longer permitted in school. We kindly ask that you ensure your child leaves all such cards at home. We appreciate your support in helping us maintain a focused and harmonious environment for all our pupils.

Mr Gale

Year 5 started their new design and technology topic this week - healthy pasta sauces. They started by tasting a range of sauces already available in the supermarket. They had to decide on the user, purpose and functionality of the sauces and of course decide which they liked best! Next week they will be tasting a range of seasonal vegetables.
Year 3 worked hard on creating password posters to share why we need passwords and how we can create good ones.

Year 4 had a visit from the pop up book author Robert Crowther. He talked to the children about his books and how to create different forms of sliders and pop ups. They then created their own penguin related pop up cards ready for their next English topic.

At break times this week the children have been using a range of equipment on the Astro. Here they are enjoying Thursday skipping rope day!
3C enjoyed their active maths session this week.

This week the Eco Kids delivered their posters to classes around school to help remind everyone to save electricity by turning off lights and devices when they’re not being used.

Mrs Hopwood was so proud of this wonderful piece of work it just had to be shared in the newsletter. What a superstar 🌟

Year 6 have been working on their cam toys this week. 6H have created these incredible designs which have been finished so beautifully.

Year 5 took a visit to the Gurdwara on Soho Road this week. They found out all about the Sikh faith and how the community supports one another.

Message from the local police Ahead of Bonfire celebrations at the weekend, we're writing to remind parents and guardians of the importance of keeping children safe around fireworks and in public areas. While organised and safe bonfire events can be fun for the whole family, we have sadly seen unacceptable scenes with fireworks in Birmingham city centre recently. Please take care and ensure the safety measures are in place.

Please return any lunch bands to your child’s class teacher. We have a number that have gone missing and have probably come home in bags and on wrists! Many thanks

Please donate any Lego or duplo to the office for our wet play games.

You may have noticed our new staff jackets! Staff will be wearing them to help our children and parents to recognise who to speak to in the playground.

The newsletters are also accessible on the news section of our school website.
