Engineering level 1/2

Level 1/2 Engineering

Engineering Level 2 Award provides a more practical alternative to GCSE. The qualification is based around the world of engineering and aims to introduce students to the various strands available within the field. The qualification offers students the chance to develop knowledge, skills and understanding through tasks set in realistic work-related contexts.

Unit 1

This unit focuses on the engineer being the ‘maker’ of a product. You will be given an orthographic drawing (drawing with information to help you make it) to help you decide upon what materials, processes you could use to make it. You will create a manufacturing plan and make the product to an expected tolerance. Worth 45% of the course

Unit 2

This unit looks at the product you made in unit 1 and focuses on the engineer being the problems solver/ designer. You will create, model and test your ideas to improve the original product. Worth 25% of the course

Unit 3

This unit is an external examination based upon their theoretical knowledge which will be covered over the course. This theoretical knowledge will also be embedded in what they do throughout unit 1 and 2. Worth 30% of the course.

The future for Caerleon's Engineering Students

Many of our students stay on for A level where they have the opportunity to be apart of the Engineering Education Scheme Wales Award. This has given them the opportunity work with companies such as Zodiac Aerospace, Maybe Bridge and the Royal Navy solving real life problems.

"This scheme helped me stand out when applying to University"

Many of our students have gone on to apprenticeships where they have been gaining experience whilst having the opportunity to gain their degree at University.

"After a year of training they paid for me to go to University part time whilst being paid as a trainee Engineer."
