The Vye Road Overpass and Highway 11 Widening project delivered major transportation upgrades for Abbotsford, enhancing safety, easing congestion, and supporting cross-border travel and trade. Officially opened in December 2023, the $74.6 million initiative replaced a busy at-grade rail crossing with a new two-lane overpass and expanded Highway 11 to improve traffic flow for families, commuters, and commercial drivers alike.
Key Features
- Two-lane overpass constructed over Southern Rail and CP Rail lines on Vye Road
- 1.3 km extension of the NEXUS lane to the U.S. border to improve flow for families and commercial drivers
- Highway 11 widened to support increased traffic demand and improve connectivity to Riverside Road
- Provides alternate routing between the Aldergrove and Huntington border crossings
- Supports access to local commercial and industrial areas
Airfoam Contribution
Airfoam Industries supplied 11,700 cubic metres of Geofoam—equivalent to 138 truckloads—for the east and west approach fills of the Vye Road Overpass. Deliveries ran from November 2022 to May 2023, supporting a staged construction schedule led by Eurovia BC.
Geofoam was used as a lightweight, high-strength alternative to traditional fill to help minimize settlement, reduce lateral load on adjacent structures, and improve stability near the rail corridor. This project further refined Airfoam’s coordination processes and reinforced our role as a trusted partner in regional infrastructure development.
The Vye Road Overpass and Highway 11 Widening Project is a vital investment in safer, more efficient transportation for the Fraser Valley. Through thoughtful planning, multi-level government collaboration, innovative design-build leadership from Eurovia BC, and resilient construction solutions like Geofoam, the project stands as a long-term improvement to mobility, trade, and regional growth.
