Quiet Luxury HELENEKILDE BADEHOTEL

Discover the Danish Riviera

July 1, 2025 ... A 50 minute drive from the historic center of Copenhagen or a 1 ¼ hour train ride, you can immerse yourself in Helenekilde Badehotel, in the town of Tisvildeleje in North Zealand. The area is often referred to as the Danish Riviera or the “Hamptons of Denmark.” A hip beach town for Copenhagen creatives, it is also known for its untouched nature and pristine beaches. The 28-room property sits on a bluff with sweeping views of the Kattegat Sea. Conveniently, you'll find a pathway leading down to the sea for an invigorating morning dip.

One might describe the experience at the hotel as staying in the home of a well-traveled friend. That friend would be hotelier Alexander Kølpin, and former ballet dancer, whose inimitable style defines the atmosphere which is incredibly stylish yet entirely low key. Originally built by a construction magnate, Mr. Grüner gifted the summer house to his wife in 1896. In 1904, it was converted to a seaside boarding house in season and named Helenekilde Badehotel. Kølpin oversaw the restoration, carefully preserving and furnishing the building, transforming it into a hotel in 2008. The idea was to maintain the history of the place yet keep the natural surroundings as a key focus so as not overpower it with too much design.

Quiet luxury might best describe the overall vibe at the hotel, yet it delivers a rich experience. The accommodations are simply decorated yet furnished with everything you need. All of the rooms enjoy extraordinary light and several have a private balcony. Most importantly, a stay at Helenekilde puts you in touch with the sea, forest, beach and the light that is unique to this part of the world. It takes no effort to disconnect with technology and reconnect with nature, arriving in a place that is actually known for healing powers.

Restaurant, Bar and Terraces

Helenekilde is home to two dining experiences, including Restaurant Kilden—a culinary destination that celebrates the essence of Danish cuisine with a fresh, modern twist. Rooted in tradition yet elevated in style, the restaurant offers an authentic taste of Denmark with a focus on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Each dish is thoughtfully crafted and entirely homemade, drawing inspiration from classic Danish recipes reimagined for the contemporary palate.

Guests can indulge in elegant dishes, curated wine pairings, and cocktails—all served in a warm, inviting setting with panoramic sea views. On sunny days, the terrace provides a truly memorable experience, offering front-row seats to breathtaking sunsets over Hesselø and the Kattegat.

Our new casual outdoor dining spot, Haven, is situated in the midst of Helenekilde’s charming garden. Here, you can enjoy a more rustic and relaxed meal surrounded by nature during spring and summer when Haven is open.

As the night cools, wrap yourself in a soft warm blanket in the evenings as you watch the sunset turn into an incredibly starry night with a glass of bubbly or one of the Kolpin family wines.

Public spaces are welcoming – the comfortable lounge area flows into the bar whose doors and windows open to the sea view and outside terrace. The garden offers a petanque court where you can enjoy a tall cool drink on a hot summer day. Private yoga sessions or relaxing massages in the pavilion are arranged upon request. Take time to breathe deeply and relax – you’re home.

Discover Tisvildeleje

Tisvilde is a former fishing village whose houses are now used as charming summer residences. The beaches are known for their white sands and ever-changing soft dunes. Colorful bath houses make for a perfect photo op along the beach. Alternatively, take a hike through the nearby forest – Tisvilde Hegn, a nature reserve of rare fauna, flora and important birdlife. Dip into the incredibly clean and clear seawater, bike through the town to window shop its trendy boutiques, or sit and contemplate absolutely nothing as you gaze at the sea views from Helenekilde Badehotel.

The Legend of Saint Helene

The legend originates with the beautiful Princess Helene who was famous for her beauty and piety and had a miraculous power of healing by laying on of hands. Accompanying King Sejr on his travel and war expeditions, he became injured and she led him to a spring where he miraculously healed. Helene’s kilde became a visited shrine like many other sacred springs in the country – and thus the name Helenekilde.

Kolpin Hotels

The foundation of Kolpin Hotels is based on a passion for arts, architecture, design, and the delivery of an exceptional personal experience for guests – all aimed at creating a strong lifestyle brand. The intention is to offer a kind of quiet luxury in destinations with a strong sense of history and local character. This same sensibility was applied to Hotel Sanders, the first luxury boutique hotel in Copenhagen, as well as to the new Sanders Residence.

Kolpin Hotels has also successfully achieved recognition for two of Denmark’s most stylish beach and bathing hotels – Helenekilde Badehotel, overlooking the breathtaking view of Kattegat in Tisvilde, and Tisvildeleje Strandhotel, located in the same town and built in 1895. Both hotels are well-visited in the charming old fishing village, attracting both locals and tourists.

The latest addition to the hotel group, Roberta's Society in Aarhus, is a natural step in the development of a new brand, where Alexander Kolpin aims to create an atmosphere that demonstrates the possibility of experiencing luxury within a budget-friendly concept.

Going forward, the intention is to establish authentic and unique boutique hotels both in Denmark and internationally, respecting a high level of aesthetics and service while creating a community that connects locals and travelers through art, culture, and design.
