WEEKLY NEWSLETTER west meadows - 13th September 2024

Welcome to West Meadows Weekly!

What a busy week we have had! Children have started in their phonics groups this week in Key Stage 1 and it has been great to see how quickly they are settling. Look out for new phonics books and reading books coming home this week for children to practice with you. 5 minutes each night makes the world of difference to their reading journey. All Key Stage 2 children should also have a home reading book and reading record now so please make sure to ask if they haven’t brought it home.

Special Mentions Assemblies:

We are excited to be welcoming parents back into our Special Mention Assemblies each week. The parents of the Class Special Mention winner will be contacted on a Wednesday and invited into school on a Friday morning assembly each week to see their child receive their award. We ask that you do not tell your child that they have won so that it is a surprise!

House Captain and School Council Elections:

This week in assembly we learnt about what democracy means and launched our new House Captain and School Council election campaign. Children in Year 6 who would like to be a House Captain for their House team (Donaldson, Dahl, Walliams, Kerr) or children in Years 2-5 who would like to be a school council representative this year, should write a letter or create a poster explaining why they think they should be a House Captain and school council member, what qualities they have that would make them good for the role and how they demonstrate our school values. House Captains will present their letters in Week 5 (following their residential) in Assembly on the Wednesday while Years 2-5 will present them in class in the same week. Elections will take place in Week 5.

After School Clubs:

We are now running a new afterschool club each day after school which is similar to our breakfast club provision from 3:15pm – 4:15pm each day. This costs £3 per session and is run by Miss Morley. Places are bookable in advance via Arbor as we have a limit of 20 per day. Children will get juice and a snack and play lots of different games and activities. Miss Grange is also running sports clubs on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays which can be signed up to on Arbor. These run from 3:15pm – 4:00pm. There will be no after school club next week due to the Year 6 residential but breakfast club and Miss Grange’s sports clubs will run as normal.

Assembly Themes:

This half term in assembly we will be exploring the school value of ‘We have high aspirations’. We are exploring different sporting heroes from this summer’s Olympics and Paralympics, their journey to the Olympics and their positive mindset

Pupil Collection:

A polite reminder that children in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 must be dropped off and collected by an adult or by a sibling who is in or above Year 9 at secondary school. If arranging for someone else to collect your child you must inform either the class teacher or the office before collection and children in Foundation Stage will require a password providing. Only children in Years 5 and 6 are permitted to walk home independently and must have permission on Arbor in advance. Many thanks for your support with this.

School Trees and Bushes:

We have had incidents this week of children climbing the trees on the playground and playing in the bushes outside of school before and after school. Can we please ask that you ensure children are supervised on the playground and do not play in the bushes, climb the trees or go on the school field / tyres for their safety before and after school.

Attendance Matters:

Every Friday we will celebrate our children’s achievements, both in school and at home, including their attendance in school. Good attendance is vital for your child’s education and means they can make the most of all aspects of school life. We really need your support this year to raise our attendance. If you need any help or support please come and see Mrs Maree. You can see your own child’s attendance for the year and the last 4 weeks on the Arbor App. An attendance of 97% or above is considered to be good attendance.
