SPITMAD Magazine Review of Buddy Greenbloom's first radio single, (Better Off) I Remember Thos Times

Americana Artist Buddy Greenbloom Releases new Single, “Gothic Cowboy.”

Buddy Greenbloom, an Americana artist with a unique sound and love for storytelling tells his tale with his new emotional single, “Gothic Cowboy.”

“Gothic Cowboy” tells the unique story of Greenbloom, who began his journey as an artist at a young age, but eventually found himself in California at 40 where he was discovered and took the stage. The lyrics capture that story and how Greenbloom arrived to that point.

“Well, it's my story. I was born in the land of Lincoln in 1974. Then at 10 years old, I was brought to the Lone Star State. By 14 I found myself beaten down (literally) in the deserts of Arizona, to arrive at 40 years old in California to meet my fate as a performer. There I was discovered by a director on NCIS and began acting and performing on stage again,” says Greenbloom.

Buddy’s love for songwriting started at a young age, writing lyrics that are inspired by artists like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. Buddy has spent the last few years working with the talented AOK Records and producer, Adam Knight who is working to help

create a full studio album. “Gothic Cowboy” will be available on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Prime, and other streaming platforms May 18th, 2023.

About the Gothic Cowboys

Fronted by Buddy Greenbloom, an authentic singing cowboy from Tempe, Arizona, The Gothic Cowboys perform good time, old-fashioned Country-Western music, and fashionable Americana originals.

Who are your inspirations? What artists or bands are you listening to?

Drawing influence from the golden era of classic country, Buddy Greenbloom's sound is a throwback to Faron Young, Johnny Cash, Sanford Clark, Marty Robbins, and The Sons of the Pioneers. Greenbloom grew up listening to new wave music. Deep into synthpop bands, like A Flock of Seagulls, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, and The Cure — Greenbloom started doing western-sounding folk covers of songs like ‘People are People’ (by Depeche Mode) and that leading him into composing original Americana songs.

Country Western & Outlaw Country

Buddy Greenbloom was raised up backstage at events like Cheyenne Frontier Days and the Houston Livestock & Rodeo Show, not to mention the numerous taverns and honky tonk bars his family would frequent to support his aunt Pat Mollan, who earned her living as a session and touring drummer. These songs are engrained in Buddy's psyche as some of the earliest songs he heard.

  • Hey Good Looking
  • Crazy
  • Good Hearted Woman
  • The Ballad of Poncho and Lefty
  • Act Naturally
  • Son of a Gun
  • Folsom Prison Blues
  • On the Road Again
  • Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys
  • I Love You Arizona
  • City of New Orleans
  • I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry
  • Mama Tried
  • and more!

Cowpunk and New Wave as Westerns!

This is where it all began for Greenbloom, who as a teenager, swore off his country heritage for UK influenced new wave and post punk. After years working backstage on concerts for some of the greatest acts in showbiz, Greenbloom turned his attention to performing originals, new wave and punk rock covers, inspired by great western European folk music.

Sample Post Punk & New Wave "Cowpunk" set list:

  • Sheena is a Punk Rocker (Ramones)
  • Boys Don't Cry (The Cure)
  • People are People (Depeche Mode)
  • Girlfriend in a Coma (The Smiths)
  • Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division)
  • Sidewalking (The Jesus and Mary Chain)
  • Pale Blue Eyes (The Velvet Underground)
  • Prairie Rose (Roxy Music)

20th Annivesary of the 2003 release of 'My Little Underground' by Buddy Greenbloom

In 2003, Buddy Greenbloom released his first album, 'My Little Underground.' The album now celebrates 20 years as a cult classic, and still holds ground as a landmark recording in Americana music history! Between 2003 and 2005, Greenbloom promoted himself as the 'Gothic Cowboy', performing these songs, and other new wave covers, in famous club like the world-famous CBGB's in New York City to Bob Stane's Coffee Gallery Backstage in Los Angeles County. The reviews and comments on the landmark record speak for the album's authentic western soundscape and endearing tribute.

“When I read the press I wasn't sure whether it was a joke – this disc is essentially the songs of the Jesus and Mary Chain done by a cowboy from Arizona. Yeah, no shit, is what I thought. But as the songs carried on, I grew to love this little disc, despite whatever whacked synergy brought it together.”
