N.C. Court of Appeals session features alumni judges

Campbell Law School hosted a session of the North Carolina Court of Appeals on Feb. 12 in the Boyce Courtroom. The presiding judges for this session were all Campbell Law alumni — Judges Donna Stroud ’88, Toby Hampson ’02, Michael Stading ’06, John Tyson ’79, Allegra Collins ’06 and Jeff Carpenter ’03. Campbell Law students were encouraged to attend the proceedings to view the presentation of two cases – one civil and one criminal. Advocates for each case presented oral arguments before the Court, which will review each case thoroughly before issuing judgments. The cases presented for this session were COA23-650 State v. Fearns with Stroud, Hampson and Stading presiding and COA23-591 Jones v. N.C. Department of Public Safety with Tyson, Collins and Carpenter presiding. 'First African Americans on the N.C. Bench' exhibit on display at Wake County Justice Center

Campbell Law's "First African Americans on the North Carolina Bench" exhibit is once again on display at the Wake County Justice Center. This traveling exhibit honors the contributions made by pioneering African American judges in North Carolina. The exhibit includes Judge Elreta Melton Alexander-Ralston, Judge Sammie Chess, Jr., Judge Clifton E. Johnson, and more exceptional judges. This exhibit features a timeline of the lives and achievements of each judge and justice from 1968-2006. The exhibit is made up of eight banners and can be viewed in the atrium area of the Wake County Justice Center. Sponsorships available for 2024 Campbell Law Classic Fundraiser Golf Tournament

Campbell Law’s Student Bar Association (SBA) will host the 2024 Annual Campbell Law Classic Fundraiser Golf Tournament beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 22, at the Eagle Ridge Golf Club, 565 Competition Road. Law students, family members, faculty/staff, alumni and other attorneys will come together to raise money for SBA, which will go toward benefiting student organizations. The cost for students is $30 each, family members $50 each, faculty/staff $55 each and alumni and other attorneys are $100 per player. Campbell Law advocates advance to 49th annual National Trial Competition

After sweeping the 2023 National Trial Competition (NTC) – Region V, Campbell Law advocates are once again heading to nationals, announced Director of Competitive Advocacy Mary Ann Matney ‘17. Third-year law students Sydney Kraft, who also won Best Direct Examination, and Susannah Horton were coached to victory by Maria Hawkins ‘12 and will advance to the 49th annual National Trial Competition where they will compete in April in Texas, along with other regional winners. The team’s trip to Texas is proudly sponsored by Wyrick Robbins Yates & Ponton LLP. The other Campbell Law team, made up of third-year law students Will Sparks and Brandon Minella and second-year law student Mollie Sells and coached by Jacob Morse ‘17, finished as finalists. “I’m extremely proud of our teams from Campbell and enjoyed coaching with my prior NTC advocate turned litigator Jacob Morse,” Hawkins wrote on social media. Campbell Law advocates once again win ABA Client Counseling Competition regional

Campbell Law advocates won the American Bar Association (ABA) Law Student Division Regional Client Counseling Competition on Feb. 9-10. The competition, which was hosted by Campbell Law, included nine teams, according to Director of Competitive Advocacy Mary Ann Matney ’17. Campbell Law's newest Regional Client Counseling Champions are third-year law students Joanna Diaz, Rachel Putnam and second-year law student Sara Wilder. They were proudly coached by Skylar Gallagher '19 an attorney at McAngus Goudelock & Courie LLC. This team advanced to the National Finals for the ABA Client Counseling Competition on March 15-16, 2024 at Louisiana State University. The competition, which this year was focused on the area of Education Law, addresses fundamental skills necessary for all successful attorneys, especially the ability to interview, and advise and support a client through their legal issues. Competitors conduct an initial interview with someone playing the role of the client and then address both the client's legal and non-legal needs. While conducting the interview with the client, competitors are observed by three judges that score the competitors at the end of the interview. Learn more at this link.

Campbell Law advocate named best oralist at Willem C. Vis pre-moot competition in Chicago

Campbell Law's Willem C. International Arbitration Moot Court team participated in the Loyola University Chicago Willem C. Vis Pre-moot in Chicago, Illinois. The team is made up of third- year student Tomas Nazer-Paniagua, who was named best oralist, and second-year students Sofia Gomez-Ayala, Madison Carney and Philip Martin. They are coached by alumna Maeve Healy ’22, former Wallace Advocacy Fellow and former Vis team member. The team will travel to Hong Kong in March to represent Campbell Law at the 31st Vis Moot. The Vis Moot centers around a dispute arising from a sales contract concluded between two commercial parties from different countries, both signatory members to the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG). The goal of the Vis Arbitral Moot is to foster the study of international commercial law and arbitration for resolution of international business disputes through its application to a concrete problem of a client and to train law leaders of tomorrow in methods of alternative dispute resolution. N.C Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Newby to speak at Campbell Law commencement ceremony

North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Newby will offer the commencement address at Campbell Law's 46th annual hooding and graduation ceremony on Friday, May 10, Dean J. Rich Leonard has announced. Newby said he is "pleased and honored to speak at the commencement ceremony for the next generation of Campbell Law leaders." Learn more at this link.

Campbell Law to host NCBA Minorities in the Profession Pre-Law Conference

Campbell Law will once again host the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) Minorities in the Profession Pre-Law Conference on Saturday, March 16, Assistant Dean of Career and Professional Development April Giancola has announced. The free event, which is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., is designed for high school and college students, as well as paralegals, who are considering or planning to attend law school. Attendees will participate in a mock law school class, interact with law school deans and admissions counselors, speak with current law students and learn about various career paths for lawyers. Topics include navigating the admission process, how to finance law school and jobs after law school. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, according to organizers. Learn more at this link.

Campbell Law Alumni Association to host virtual CLE on March 12

The Campbell Law Alumni Association plans to host a virtual two-hour CLE from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12, Assistant Dean of External Relations Megan Sherron has announced. This presentation, which is sponsored by Chaplin and Associates Inc., will offer one hour of ethics credit and one hour of professional well-being credit from the North Carolina State Bar.

Campbell Law celebrates Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, Campbell Law's Black Law Student Association (BLSA) hosted a number of events to celebrate black life and culture. Students and staff interacted and enjoyed cultural music and barbecue during the Black History Month kickoff cookout, celebrated with a painting party and created an exhibit celebrating "African Americans in the Arts." Real Estate Lawyers Association of North Carolina alumni visit Campbell Law

The Real Estate Lawyers Association of North Carolina invited a group of attorneys, many of whom were Campbell Law alumni, from Raleigh, Charlotte and other cities across the state to come speak to law students on Feb. 20. The attorneys represented residential and commercial real estate practices across North Carolina in large, medium and small firms. The attorneys shared about their specific practices as well as the statewide real estate law landscape. “This was a tremendous networking opportunity for students interested in exploring any aspect of real estate law,” said Director of Career and Professional Development Mallory Underwood. Campbell Law hosted 2024 Federal Bar Association (FBA) CLE ‘A View from the Bench’

Campbell Law hosted a continuing legal education (CLE) program entitled “A View From the Bench,” sponsored by the Federal Bar Association (FBA)’s Eastern District of North Carolina (EDNC) Chapter on Feb. 23. The CLE featured several panels including one made up of U.S. District Court judges, and one made up of U.S. Magistrate judges. The CLE covered motions practice preferences, appearing before the Court, trial practice, local rules and standing orders, professionalism, tips for appearing before the magistrate judges, pretrial procedures, managing discovery disputes and best practices for use of technology in the courtroom. Jesse Williams to join Campbell Law as assistant professor

Campbell Law will welcome Jesse Williams to the faculty as assistant professor effective July 1, 2024, Dean J. Rich Leonard has announced. Williams will bring his expertise in property law to the classroom in the fall. Before his arrival at Campbell Law, Williams worked with the Environmental Law & Policy Clinic at Wake Forest University School of Law, where he focused on heirs’ property matters and environmental policy matters for clients who are otherwise unable to afford or access legal representation. A native of Forsyth County, Williams earned his J.D. from Yale Law School in 2020 and his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Yale University in 2012. Learn more at this link.

Campbell Law Review Symposium 2024 to focus on AI in the legal profession

The Campbell Law Review will host its 2024 Symposium, “The Impending AI Revolution in the Legal Profession,” from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, at the Jiddi Space & Courtyard in Downtown Raleigh. The event will include a social hour, a seated dinner, an incredible panel of industry experts and a Q&A session. Experts include Campbell Law Professor Suzanna Geiser, Angela P. Doughty, Diane Littlejohn, Dr. Edgar Lobaton, Geoff MacLeay, Catherine Sanders Reach, Jill Rothstein and John Sieman. The panel discussion will explore the nature of artificial intelligence, its applications in the legal field and the anticipated transformations it may bring to the legal landscape, according to the event organizers. Leading the conversation will be an impressive panel of industry experts, scholars, practitioners and policymakers. The Symposium offers two hours of CLE credit from the North Carolina Bar for North Carolina attorneys. Campbell Law Spotlight: Ginny Walker '23

After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) with a business degree, Virginia "Ginny"Walker '23 started her professional career working for a Wilmington bank. However, after a few years of working at the bank, Walker took a moment to reflect on her career trajectory over the next five to 10 years. Walker attended a trusts and estates meeting for her family, where she recognized that the attorney leading the meeting held her dream job. The experience made her realize that estate planning attorneys can climb to the top of their profession while still enjoying all the client-facing aspects she loved about her position as a business analyst.
