COOLROOMS The DEsign of PALACIO DE ATOCHA MADRID

COOL DESIGN

Hotel COOLROOMS Palacio de Atocha is a new concept for a luxury hotel, with 34 very spacious rooms housed in a refurbished building dating from 1852 in the heart of the Barrio de las Letras district of Madrid. Cosmopolitan and palatial, it features a spectacular entrance guarded by the figure of the god Hermes which conveys the nobility of the building while its carriage passageway leads to a secret garden and pool. It whispers the allusion of the success and triumph of its former owner - a high ranking official of the Ministry of the Navy and Knight of the Order of Charles III - Sir Nemesio Sancha.

Set in the heart of Madrid, the project has been developed by several teams uniting the rigorous sensitivity of the Antana architectural firm, the stylistic fluidity of Proyecto Singular's interior design approach and the poetic precision of Maria Covarrubias lighting design, the result of this fascinating fusion is a signature establishment with spirit, capable of blending comfort and excitement.

The Essence of Chic

The design studio Proyecto Singular has been responsible for the interior design of COOLROOMS Palacio de Atocha, a place of historical heritage and contemporary energy. A passionate and seductive project emitting the vibrations of a home in an old palace from 1852. It's simple and very personal, almost cinematographic beauty is transmitted through two very different styles: some with a more masculine and industrial approach and others more classic and sophisticated.

"Light is intangible, so it is all about creating mental images, to see and draw the light in your mind, to only then project it," says Maria Covarrubias.

The lighting of the palace is the work of designer Maria Covarrubias, who surprises with a sensitivity befitting the best director of photography and achieves a harmonious coexistence with the exterior light that bathes the building, A project with highlights such as the vertical light installation on the main staircase, the blue-green lamps integrated into the landscaping of the garden and even the impressive cluster-like lamps hanging from the high ceilings of the historic halls, which generate a warmth and welcoming light.

Cosmopolitan and palatial, it features not only a spectacular entrance guarded by the figure of the god Hermes - an illusion to the success and triumph of its former owner - a high ranking official of the ministry of the Navy and Knight of the Order of Charles the III - but also a carriage passage, with 7 metre high ceilings, leading in a straight line towards a secret garden and pool.

Today it's 34 rooms take up the baton with a perfect fusion of palatian energy and a more sober contemporary design. Its walls have witnessed the passing of time and the emergence of luxury in Madrid, as evidenced by the cast iron columns on the main floor - a witness to the architectural and artistic avant-garde style of the time of its construction - or the original granite fountain that recalls the arrival of piped water into the building

History of the Palace

The history of the palacio played an important role in the design. The hotel interior recreates the images of successive eras of the city, both in the garden and the pool and in the carriage passageway (which today houses the reception) or in the splendid staircase declared of cultural interest by the Spanish National Heritage Office. Nemesio Sancha had his architects reflect allusions to his status as a lawyer - adding lictors as ornamental elements - as well as his success in trade, by filling all the spaces with the image of the god hermes framed by laurel branches in allusion to success and triumph

The most important societal receptions took place in the ballroom, and among its decorative details, its ceiling with mouldings or birch rods joined by golden leather ribbons stands out today. This motif is repeated in other rooms and alludes to Sr. Sancha's status as a jurist. The beautiful adjoining room was used by the gentlemen after lunch, where they smoked their cigars while discussing business and politics. It is a space that is perfectly preserved, in the absence of furniture and drapery with walls decorated with wallpaper, probably from the Royal Factory in Madrid and considered to be of cultural interest by the Spanish National Heritage Office. Its fireplace front is made of white Carrara marble and the gilded mouldings are a recreation of the Louis XVI style that came back into fashion at the time, recovering sinuous polychrome-laden taste.

Among the treasures that have survived the passage of time are the spectacular main façade on Calle Atocha, it's majestic entrance door - which as been stripped to recover its original color - and the courtyard of the bar, with a notable interest on the breakup of the facades with exposed right angles.
