NPPS Newsletter August 2024

Principal's Message

As we move past the midpoint of Term 3, it’s been a busy and exciting time here at school! The past month has been filled with energy as our students took part in swimming lessons, which finishes today. Now, we’re shifting gears as we enter the Athletics Carnival season, with events scheduled over the next two weeks. Please check the Term Planner below and look out for Connect messages with all the details. We look forward to seeing our students demonstrate their skills, sportsmanship and enthusiasm during this time. Next Friday is our Athletics Carnival held at Charles Veryard Reserve followed by our Early Childhood Sports Day on Wednesday 4 September. Fingers crossed the weather holds up.

This week has also been a highlight with Book Week celebrations in full swing. The joy of reading has been embraced by all, and we’re eagerly anticipating our dress-up day next Tuesday, with a parade at 9.00am in the undercover area. It’s always a delight to see the creativity and imagination that our students bring to this event.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in all that we do.

Grounds

As our school continues to grow, with increased enrolments, particularly in Early Childhood, we’re proactively planning to ensure our facilities meet the needs of our students.

A Grounds Sub-Committee has been formed, consisting of members from our school team, the School Board, and the P&C, and has been working collaboratively to develop a comprehensive Grounds Master Plan. This plan is designed to address the upcoming challenges associated with our expanding student population and provide long term solutions to the Government that best meet the needs of our school community. One of the key short-term considerations is the likely installation of a demountable classroom to accommodate the increased numbers in Early Childhood enrolments for 2025.

This thoughtful and strategic approach will help us ensure that our school environment remains welcoming, safe, and conducive to learning as we adapt to our growing community.

We will keep you updated as plans progress, and we value the input and support from all members of our school community as we move forward.

I invite you to join us at the upcoming P&C General Meeting next Wednesday, 28 August 6.00pm - 8.00pm, where we will be placing a strong emphasis on shaping the future vision for our school. This is a unique opportunity for parents to actively contribute to discussions that will influence our school’s direction in the coming years.

NAPLAN

I’m pleased to share an update on our 2024 NAPLAN results. Our Year 3 and 5 students demonstrated admirable effort, and there are many achievements to celebrate. These results have provided us with valuable insights into our students’ learning, helping us identify both strengths and areas where we can further support their progress and development.

The recent changes to the NAPLAN testing framework mean that this year’s results will serve as a new baseline for these cohorts of students. As such, we won’t be able to measure year-on-year growth until 2025. This shift presents a unique challenge, but it also offers us an opportunity to review and strengthen our teaching strategies and interventions.

The data has already been shared with the school board (click the link below to view) and our staff also spend time analysing the results. These insights will be beneficial as we continue to refine our practices and tailor our teaching to meet the needs of our students.

2024 NAPLAN Results

Staff National Schools Opinion Survey

I’m also delighted to share some positive news from our recent National Schools Opinion Survey for Staff. The results show an upward trend and reflect the strong sense of community and dedication within our school, and it’s pleasing to see such positive feedback. It’s clear our staff are committed to creating a supportive and engaging learning environment.

We believe that a motivated and satisfied team is key to providing the best education for our students, and these survey outcomes affirm that we are on the right track.

OSH Club survey

At our North Perth, we are committed to providing the best possible care for your children, both during and after school hours. To help us achieve this, we are seeking your feedback on OSH Club’s after school care program.

Your insights will be incredibly valuable in helping us understand what’s working well and where improvements can be made.

Please take a moment to share your feedback with us.

Are You Leaving Us?

If your child will be moving to a different primary school and will no longer be attending NPPS in 2025, please email Corrina Cook, at Corrina.Cook@education.wa.edu.au, advising which school they will be attending in 2025. This is important information that helps us plan classes for 2025.

Sean Avery Incursion

We were thrilled to welcome the talented author and illustrator Sean Avery to North Perth Primary School last Friday for an unforgettable Book Week incursion. Sean is known for his creative storytelling and unique artistic style, captivated our students with his engaging presentations and interactive workshops.

Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to dive into the world of writing and illustrating, learning firsthand from Sean’s experiences. He shared insights into his creative process and even gave us a sneak peek into his latest works. Sean definitely inspired many of our students to pursue a career in writing.

Don’t forget our annual Book Week parade will be held on Tuesday 27 August at 9.00am in the undercover area.

Positive Behaviour Support Update

This term staff and students have met fortnightly to discuss, learn and practice expected behaviours from our Values Behaviour Expectation Matrix.

So far, we have covered:

  • We are kind to everyone
  • We follow teachers instructions
  • We move safely through the school

Coming up:

  • We treat others’ the way we want to be treated
  • We attempt to resolve conflicts ourselves

Wellbeing Wagon

Our Well-being Wagon in the hall has quickly become a favourite spot for some of our students at North Perth Primary School. Every lunchtime, students are eagerly gathering around to enjoy a range of activities. Whether it’s drawing vibrant pictures, playing fun games with friends, or building imaginative structures with construction toys, the Well-being Wagon offers something for everyone. This initiative has been a wonderful addition to our school, providing students with a space to unwind, express themselves, and strengthen friendships during their break times.

Year 6 Day Camp Excursion

In week 5 the Year 6 students went on an exciting excursion to Kings Park. Throughout the day the students got to experience and explore the natural environment while learning how to protect and respect it safely. They got introduced to bush skills through activities such as shelter building, finding drinking water, making damper on a campfire and delivering simple first aid. The students also got to become junior bushland carers through hands-on activities in seed science, ecology and plant breeding. They undertook real-life scientific processes to collect, clean and dry seeds for future propagation. We finished the day off in the Rio Tinto Naturescape in Kings Park where they enjoyed playing amongst the tall towers, climbing structures and water creeks.

Year 1 Bunnings Incursion

The Year One students recently enjoyed a fantastic Father’s Day workshop hosted by Bunnings. Students, along with their parents and caregivers, came together to create special, heartfelt gifts that they will cherish for years to come.

The smiles and laughter throughout the workshop showed just how much everyone enjoyed the experience, making it a memorable day for both the students and their loved ones. A big thank you to all who attended and to Bunnings for making this event possible!

Interschool Cross-Country

On Tuesday, 23 July, our students from Years 3 to 6 took part in the interschool cross country carnival at Charles Veryard Oval. The day started with a rain shower that gave everyone an unexpected rinse on the way over, but this did nothing to dampen our spirits.

The Year 4 students were the first to take on the challenge, running their 2km course with determination. Next, the Year 3s participated in their very first interschool cross country race. Though nervous at first, they quickly showed remarkable grit and enthusiasm.

Our Year 5 students continued the momentum with a strong performance in their 2km race, and the day concluded with the Year 6 runners taking on a challenging 2.5km course.

Overall, our students demonstrated exceptional resilience and sportsmanship, culminating in a commendable second-place finish—just 42 points behind first place. A special thanks to the Year 6 parents for providing delicious food and drinks, which were greatly appreciated by everyone.

Congratulations to all our students for their hard work and dedication, and a special mention to those who qualified for the SSWA Champion Schools Cross Country event later this year. You have made us all incredibly proud.
