Welcome to the 2025 School Year
Our year began back on Friday 31 January when teachers returned to work, making tremendous use of two days to prepare resources and programs for a quality start to the school year.
The remaining two days were spent collaborating on our new School Excellence Plan, based significantly on advice received from our participation in the External Validation process conducted last year. Our focus will be on:
- Effective Classroom Practice – in particular picking up on the Department’s strong focus on the Explicit Teaching framework
- Wellbeing – working to ensure all members of our school community feel valued and included, with a particular focus on consistent student behaviour management.
- Educational Leadership – building the capacity of all staff and students to be leaders of learning.
With the above in mind, the staggered return of our students, beginning with Years 7, 11 & 12 last Thursday provided a positive start for all three cohorts, for each of whom this is a particularly significant year.
HSC 2024
Tomorrow we will invite back our high achieving HSC students from last year to be acknowledged in their school community before they head off to university. The achievement of five Band 6 results and 73 Band 5 results is a strong reflection of the hard work of these students and their teachers, for which they should be congratulated.
Equally significantly was the upward drift of our average HSC results across all students and courses. These results, for the second year in a row, are above the ‘like schools’ average (ie schools based in communities with a similar socio economic breakdown) and virtually on par with the broader State average.
Again, congratulations to our Year 12 class of 2024.
Year 11 ‘O’ Day
Our new Year 11 group began their Preliminary Course studies this week with our traditional senior student orientation day, or “O” Day. Which featured a presentation on study skills from Elevate Education, along with workshops on assessment, expectations of Senior students, time management, wellbeing and post school options.
Many thanks to Mr Matthias, Ms Rowles, Mrs O’Keeffe, Mrs Bannerman, Ms Skinner and Mr Haddon for bringing their expertise to the day.
Swimming Carnival
This year will again see a sun safe and temperature appropriate twilight carnival from 3:30 pm to approximately 7:30 pm at the Tweed Regional Aquatic Centre in Murwillumbah. This will take the place of normal lessons on Friday 14 February, when only minimal supervision will be provided at school.
Many thanks to Mr Ella and Mr Hillard for their organisation.
Sports Excellence Basketball
We are very proud to have formed a partnership with Tweed valley basketball, who will be providing coaching for our Sports Excellence students who are passionate about basketball.
Many thanks to Mrs Fitzhugh, our Relieving HT PDHPE and to Mrs Mackay, our Business Manager for their coordination.
Wishing all of our school community a great week.
GENERAL NEWS
Well done to Lachie, our vice captain for taking part in his first Kingscliff parkrun!
Student Use of Mobile Phones Policy
The NSW Department of Education has a Student use of mobile phone policy in schools, students are not allowed to use mobile phones at NSW public schools, including during recess and lunch. Updates were introduced to the Digital Devices and Online Services for Students Policy which focuses on safe, responsible and respectful use of devices and services.
At Kingscliff High School, we refer to this as the "Off and Away" Mobile Phone Policy, this means:
All mobile phones must be switched OFF and kept AWAY (out of sight) during classroom lessons, transition times between classes, and breaks.
Kingscliff High School is a mobile-free environment designed to foster improved learning and engagement. In the case of an emergency, we will always ensure you can contact your child.
The Kingscliff High School Mobile phone policy can be accessed via our website at:
