Nukumea Newsletter Term 1, Week 8

Kia ora koutou, time for another school newsletter already! This year is definitely picking up in pace. The students have had an amazing time swimming and we have seen their skills and confidence improve so much over the last two weeks. Their learning in class is progressing just as rapidly and we are excited to share with you in this newsletter an upcoming date to a learning celebration later this term.

We are blessed at Nukumea to have an amazing community surrounding us. This newsletter is testament to that. We introduce you to our new Learning Assistant Victoria, share two events coming up at school shortly and also add a plea for help from members of our community who are trying to build something we can all enjoy.

Welcome to the team, Victoria!

We would like to introduce you to Victoria Wigg, who has joined our team at Nukumea as a Learning Assistant. Victoria will be working with groups of students across the school who require additional support in literacy, numeracy and English language learning.

"Kia Ora families and friends of Nukumea Primary, my name is Victoria Wigg and I am the new Learning Assistant.

I live locally here in beautiful Orewa with my husband and children where our family enjoys getting out and about on walks, bike rides, beach swims and playing plenty of sports.

Everybody has made me feel very welcome and I look forward to supporting your tamariki on their learning journey alongside this amazing teaching team."

On Tuesday afternoon we were visited by I Am Hope, who spoke with the students about understanding their emotions and knowing who they could talk to about their feelings. Part of the presentation was the story of TR & Mack. you can listen to Mike King reading this story on this link: https://www.iamhope.org.nz/listen

Outside In - From Nebulae to Nukumea Thursday, April 11th 4-6pm

Take a multisensory journey through some of the learning that has been going on at Nukumea this term. Through our concept of Diversity, we have been exploring a variety of different contexts in exciting ways.

  • Korimako (Years 4-6) will be sharing different features of planets of our solar system, both real and imagined.
  • Kōkopu (Years 1-3) will be sharing the many different foods and culinary delights found around Earth.
  • Inanga (Years 0-1) will be sharing their explorations and construction of different buildings and structures around Earth.

For all groups, there will be opportunities for students to interact with different activities, listen to and watch a variety of presentations and demonstrations. The times are as follows:

  • 4-5pm parents, caregivers & their children visit different displays and activities between classes and learning areas
  • 5-5:30pm - Student Performance & Video Sharing in Hall
  • 5:30-6pm - additional time for interaction with displays and activities.

Our ākonga (students) are visiting our library weekly, along with it being available for some of lunchtime for them to read, build with Lego and chill out. Our Year 3 - 6 ākonga are able to issue two books at a time, with ākonga in Year 0 - 2 able to issue one book. Books can be kept for two weeks. After this time, our library system will automatically issue an 'overdue' notice. This is just a reminder to whānau that books are due to be returned, or alternatively, can be renewed. Books can be returned to the return box in the library or to classroom teachers.

If you have any unwanted board games or art and craft supplies at home, we would love to add these to the library. Please drop into the office or send it to school with your child. If you have any questions regarding the library, please contact Sarah.

Micro Digger needed

A group of parents in our wonderful community are working on a project to build a mountain bike trail for everyone to enjoy. They are looking for a Micro Digger to help clear part of the trail. If you know anyone that may have access to one of these, please contact Steve on stevem@nukumea.school.nz

Students in Kōkopu have been enjoying the Smiling Minds programme this term, a mindfulness tool designed to support social and emotional skills and improve overall hauora. Smiling Mind has developed a range of tools and resources to support families to build their mental fitness together. Check out what their free app has to offer and give it a go with your whānau!

We hope that you are able enjoy this sunshine that is trying to fight off the increasingly cold mornings and evenings. Have a great week!
