MEET JOEY
Joey Deprey '26, a Business Administration major with a Finance minor, spent the fall semester studying abroad in Turin, a leading business and cultural destination in Northern Italy.
Joey was determined to fully immerse himself in Italian culture if given the chance to study abroad. When the opportunity arose, he chose to study at the SAA - School of Management at the Università di Torino in Turin. He was drawn to the program for its affordability, the valuable opportunities it provided, and the fact that the curriculum included two required Business courses for his major.
THE COURSEWORK
- Elementary Italian I
- Business Ethics and Fair Trade
- Intercultural Communication
- Operations Management
- Italian Cuisine
a GLOBAL TEACHING experience
While in Italy, Joey’s advisors partnered with a local elementary school to offer student teaching roles to study-abroad participants. As an English instructor within the school, Joey’s primary responsibilities included helping students improve their pronunciation, spelling, and grasp of basic grammar in English.
“My main role was helping students better understand—or in some cases, understand for the first time—pronunciations, spelling, and basic grammar of the English language.”
This opportunity not only strengthened his intercultural communication skills, but also deepened his ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
“Working in a diverse setting highlighted the importance of patience, effective communication, and creative problem-solving. These are all essential traits for success in entrepreneurship and business altogether. [This Experience] also provided me with a more well-rounded global understanding, which is vital for business relations with international markets.”
WORLDWIDE ADVENTURES
Beyond his studies, Joey enjoyed extracurricular activities such as indulging in Italian cuisine, attending a Torino FC match, riding camelback through Morocco, hiking in Susa, and more.
Reflecting on his time abroad, Joey credits the experience with shaping him into a more patient, adaptable, and culturally aware individual.
Joey plans to apply the skills he developed abroad and on campus—particularly his ability to communicate across cultures—to his future endeavors in business and entrepreneurship.
All of these experiences have helped me mature in so many ways. I can now communicate more effectively with people from diverse cultures, which will greatly benefit my future business career. I have every intention to be an entrepreneur.”
