We recognise that not all researchers have access to the same support for their research. We are able to provide support towards the fee of a limited number of applicants outside the North West Social Science Doctoral Partnership (NWSSDTP).
This support will be awarded on a case-by-case basis, and with respect to the particular circumstances of those applying. As well as PGRs, these bursaries are open to those working within the voluntary, charity and community sector.
Doctoral students
If you are a doctoral student as part of the application you will be required to submit a supporting statement from your doctoral supervisor. We will not be able to process your application without this statement, so please ensure this is also (separately) submitted by the application deadline.
You will need to provide your supervisor with the following information (you can share this webpage with them):
- The statement should be emailed to methods@Manchester.ac.uk and the email subject line should be “SS 2024: applicant's full name”. (e.g. SS 2024: Sarah Chen)
- It should be a maximum of 300 words and should address the following two points (and include the applicant's and the supervisor's full names):
- The applicant’s academic and personal qualities and suitability for this course (in terms of background knowledge/experience, stage of study etc).
- How the course will directly benefit the applicant’s doctoral research
Application form
To apply for an 'exceptional circumstances' bursary you will also need to complete a short application form. As well as information about research, you will be required to answer the following longer questions. These are designed to ensure we are allocating bursaries on the basis of applicants' suitability for the course they are applying for and that applicants have explored alternative sources of funding:
- Explain why the course is important for the methodological approach you are taking in your research (and if applicable your stage in your PGR programme) (max 150 words)
- Detail any relevant prior experience, demonstrating that you have met any course requirements or stipulated background (if stated on course details) (max 150 words)
- Outline why you feel you should receive special consideration for a further reduction on the reduced course fees. Please note, if you are a doctoral student, you should include any details of funding/scholarship you receive and the nature of this funding, addressing whether it is possible for this funding to fully/partially cover your Summer School fees (for other applicants please include any training support/grants you have access to (max300 words)
Please note we are only able to provide these bursaries to a very limited number of applicants, so we wish to ensure that we are able to allocate these on the basis of who need them most.
Please access the application form below (and just to emphasise your application will not be considered unless it is complete - ie ALL questions answered and a supervisor statement submitted - it is your responsibility to ensure your supervisor submits a statement by the application deadline).
