Canbury School Newsletter 24th November 2023. ISSUE 316

Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.

We were over whelmed today with the huge generosity shown by our students and staff who brought in bag upon bag of donations for 'Food Bank Friday', our new monthly drive to donate goods to our local food bank, and which helps our most vulnerable neighbours. 'Thank you' doesn't really do it justice - but please know we are very grateful, as is the food bank. Every tin, every packet, every bottle will go to, and be used by, someone very deserving.

We welcomed our School photographer into the building on Tuesday, which brought out the usual response from students and staff. Some were delighted to step in front of the lens, some, not quite so! We do now have up to date photographs of most of our students and the order slips should have come home to you via your child.

It's been a particularly busy week for our sporting students, our arty ones and our older ones. Our younger dodgeball competitors returned to school victorious, our photographic students enjoyed a visit to Kew Gardens today and our older Year 11s and Sixth Formers attended the Surrey Festival of Skills yesterday. Read on to find out what they were all getting up to. As always, thanks to staff who go the extra mile every day to make these extra events happen.

Finally a gentle reminder that beginning on Monday for two weeks we have Mock exams for Years 11 and Sixth Form. Everyone was reminded at assembly today about the need to move quietly about the building and with consideration for those in the exams, especially since some of them run into break times. We wish our exam students a peaceful weekend, not only revising but also sleeping, eating well and taking regular breaks. All will be well in the end.

Best wishes

Mrs Rich.

Real snake or robotic dog? The choice was yours.

Robotic dogs, live snakes, or virtual reality head sets - whatever your interest, there was something to suit our Year 11 and Sixth Form students at the Surrey Festival of Skills at Sandown Park yesterday.

Students and staff were beaming from head to toe yesterday. Angus was amazed at the wide variety of choice, Layla said she found it informative and Chloe enjoyed speaking with charity workers (as well as walking the plank - virtually, mind!)

Tick tock - having fun with a clock.

We simple love these brilliant posters created by Year 8 students Issy and Rosie. The detail in them is amazing. If you need to brush up on your time-telling skills, then look no further. Well done!

Beautiful work by Issy (left) and Rosie (right).

Anti bullying ambassadors - well done team.

Anti-Bullying ambassadors Flora, Rory, Carl and Logan did a fantastic job teaming up with Reenie, our Charity Prefect, to raise awareness for BBC Children in Need in their assembly last Friday. They supported one another brilliantly and really demonstrated this year’s theme, which was a focus on positive relationships. Better still, we raised a total of £183.25 for the charity. Winner winner, chicken dinner! Well done, you positive people.

Home made cake to go wild for? Yes please!

Get your best Mary Berry baking head on and thrill your Canbury peers with your prowess in the kitchen. Next Friday our fabulous Eco team (Alannah, Josh, Bethany, Matthew A and Phoebe) are hosting a cake bake and sale for Rewilding Britain. This organisation supports a growing movement of rewilding practitioners across Britain, wherever they are in their journey to restore nature. Challenging decision makers and landowners to change laws, policies and practice to allow rewilding to restore our land and seas, these people are busy shakers and changers . Money raised at the sale will go to this cause, so please get baking and thinking what NUT-FREE cake(s) or cookies you can bring into school. The extra cherry on the cake (see what we did there?) is that the Eco team has asked everything is home-baked, thereby cutting down on the plastic involved in your support. Every little helps.

Dodge ballers dodge defeat to emerge victorious second year in a row!

On Monday we took the KS3 Dodgeball team down to the Guildford Spectrum for the annual SSSSA Dodgeball competition. After winning the tournament last year, expectations were high, and I’m pleased to report that our team did not disappoint. Competing against 15 other schools, our students dodged, ducked, dipped, dived and dodged to win the tournament for a second successive year!

Top left, clockwise: The team, Lloyd lifts the trophy, Lysander and Marley can't stop smiling.

We were unbeaten on the day, with our students showing great teamwork, togetherness and sportsmanship. Well done to all involved, and good luck to the Year 10 team next week. KS3 Dodgeball Team: Remi, Mason, Lysander, Marley, Alfie, Lloyd, Theo, Evan, Mani and Nico.

Games timetable - until December 2023.

Thank you so much!

Students need to get their sorting hats on next week! Mr Fairbrass is all tee'd up to deliver the first consignment of the 'Food bank Friday' donations, but before he does so, we will need to pack up the food and load up the mini-bus. The Kingston sorting depot is all ready for our visit next Wednesday, so there is still time to donate before then. The next 'Food bank Friday' will be on Friday 26th January 2024. We'll remind you nearer the time!

Wow! This is a lot of food. Thank you so much.
