Learn About Hunger Among Military Families

MAZON’s groundbreaking report, “Hunger in the Military: Food Insecurity Among Military Families in the U.S.” documents the unique food security challenges facing military families and outlines several recommendations for meaningful, systemic solutions.

Learn more about the persistent barriers military families face in this investigative reporting from Newsy:

Food pantries support military families on or near every military installation in the United States.

By the Department of Defense's own estimate, 24% of active duty servicemembers experience food insecurity. However, the data publicly available from both government and military interest group surveys indicate that the scope of the crisis is broad and affects military families across the country. Inflation and rising prices have further exacerbated the challenges.

In the coming months, Congress will turn its attention to the 2023 Farm Bill, which authorizes programs like SNAP.

This is an important opportunity to ensure that all people, including military families, can access SNAP. The Department of Defense's roadmap to strengthening food security is an important step, but much more must be done by the Administration and Congress.

Addressing military hunger is a matter of readiness, retention, and recruitment.
