From the Hilltop February 2025

Embracing Winter on The Hilltop

It is amazing how much Kimball Union can pack into the shortest month of the year. While we look ahead to Spring Break, here's a look back at an action-packed February that brought together so many generations of the KUA community.

Celebration Marks Completion of Athletic Facility Renovations

The KUA community came together on February 8 to celebrate a legacy gift from David Winslow '81 that created a $250,000 challenge. More than 80 donors answered that match to collectively raise more than $500,000 to complete renovations to the Whittemore Athletic Center and Akerstrom Arena.

Scenes From: Winter Carnival

No one is left out in the cold during Winter Carnival, an annual tradition that pits each grade against one another in fun activities that help chase away any winter blues.

Connecting Medicine & Computer Science

Isobel '25 mapped out a customized eight-week educational experience that touched on skills from casting fractures to coding software last summer. The program, which leveraged her interests from her KUA coursework, had a direct impact on the path she'll pursue at Carnegie Mellon University next year.

Finding Community and Purpose in Poetry

West ’28 represented KUA in the New Hampshire regional semifinals of Poetry Out Loud, a national competition designed to bring poems to life for high-school students while helping them develop public speaking skills and an understanding of literary history and the world around them.

Play, Run, Jump, and Throw Like a Girl

In honor of National Girls & Women in Sports Day, KUA invited students from the neighboring Plainfield School to enjoy an afternoon to try new sports, explore the campus, meet new friends, and cheer on the Wildcats. It was hard to tell who had more fun and who left feeling more inspired!

Just in the last five years, we have begun seeing female coaches and officials for men’s professional sports, equitable venues and accommodations for female teams in the NCAA, and the addition of professional female leagues. Bringing our younger community together with females at KUA to focus on supporting each other and continuing the momentum is a privilege and a responsibility to honor the past and the future of female athletics." - Colleen Norgang '03, Head Athletic Trainer

Living Cities and Dead Bees: An Exploration of Climate Change

Ada '25 utilized a Cullman Scholarship to further her knowledge in sustainability, participating in five-weeks of courses focused on best practices in both urban and rural settings.

Grade Level Activity Day Builds Community Connections

On a chilly Saturday morning in February, KUA students said so long to their regular routine of morning classes in favor of the school’s biannual Grade Level Activity Day, an event designed to give students an experience that resonates with their standing on their KUA journey.

Opening this Week!

The KUA Arts Department presents Les Misérables February 27, 28, and March 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Flickinger Auditorium. Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, this most epic of musicals weaves together themes of love, redemption, resilience, and, above all, hope into a story as intimately human as it is universal.
