GCSE Physical Education
This course builds upon students’ broad range of practical experiences from Key Stage 3. It also aims to extend their understanding of a broad range of theory including the study of anatomy, physiology, fitness, health, and skill acquisition. The examination is in two units:
Unit 1: (40%) THEORY EXAM
- Topics studied include:
- Health and Wellbeing
- Physiological Factors
- Psychological Factors
- Assessed through a 90‑minute exam at the end of Year 11.
- The exam will be completed on Chromebooks.
- Includes a mixture of quick‑response, short‑answer and extended‑answer questions.
Unit 2: Performance (60% of the Qualification)
- Pupils will be assessed in two sports.
- A final list of available sports will be shared once confirmed, with opportunities for both on‑site and off‑site activities depending on the activity chosen.
- Pupils will complete an 8‑week training programme focusing on a specific component of fitness that supports performance in their chosen sport.

GCSE Lesson Structure & Expectations
- Pupils will have an additional five PE lessons over a two‑week timetable.
- The number of practical sessions may vary between two and three each fortnight, depending on the time of year and facility availability.
- We expect pupils to:
- Show consistent effort and maintain a positive attitude in all activities.
- Always strive to do their best, regardless of the task.
- Work appropriately and respectfully in a variety of settings, including individual, pair and group activities.
- Have appropriate kit and footwear for all practical lessons.
CAREERS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH This qualification provides an excellent foundation for the study of WJEC AS and A Level Physical Education or WJEC Level 3 Sport. It will also provide a satisfying and worthwhile course of study if you choose not to progress further. Importantly, studying GCSE Physical Education and Health will develop many transferable skills including communication, performance and presentation skills, teamwork, leadership, focus, refinement and selfconfidence. The career possibilities that come from studying Physical Education and Health are extensive, but a few are listed here:
