After months of planning and dedicated preparation, the Department of Athletics and Recreation hosted its first-ever Athletics Open House during the early spring of 2025. This event hosted over 100 prospective student-athletes and showcased the true meaning of being a Dean Bulldog. Learn more about the making of the event and its success down below:
Making the idea into reality
In the fall of 2024, newly-appointed Associate Director of Athletics Ashley Magruda-Wood wanted to find a way to showcase the department's growth, while simultaneously giving prospective athletes a platform to showcase their value in front of collegiate coaches. The Department had never hosted an event of this design, and this would be a first-time venture across all elements.
However, after months of planning and discussion, the Department made the event official: Athletics Open House was set for Thursday, February 20th, 2025.
it wasn't just an event...
On the surface, the inaugural Athletics Open House was created to help grow exposure and opportunity for incoming collegiate athletes. However, the value goes its intention. The event showcased the teamwork and internal collaboration of Dean Athletics. Every person in the department played a crucial role in its execution. This included floor plans, catering, setting up tables & chairs, audio & video, and various other tasks.
THE DAY ARRIVES
The open house exceeded every expectation that was set. Pieri Gym was full of life, with dozens of athletes having engaging conversation with the Dean's respective coaching staffs. Opening ceremonies also gave families a chance to learn about the value in the student-athlete experience from administration.
After opening ceremonies, students had an opportunity to tour Dean's campus with their sport of interest. They also had the chance to suit-up in their future uniforms and participate in a media day with sports information. The open house concluded with coaches meetings and a Q&A session with administrative staff.
At the end of the day, students walked away gaining a full experience of what the department has to offer.
