Nukumea Newsletter Term 3 Week 5 2024

Kia ora koutou, and welcome to our third newsletter of this term. The term is absolutely flying by and it has been wonderful to walk through the learning spaces and see the calm focus occurring as students are all getting stuck into their learning.

We have a few new students joining the school over the next few weeks and we are about to advertise for Out of Zone enrolments for 2025. If you know of any friends interested in enrolling at Nukumea for next year, please encourage them to keep an eye out for this or even to get in contact and come for a tour. If you have neighbours who may have a younger one turning 5 in the next year, please encourage them to make contact with the school office so we plan ahead for visits and transition programmes so students have the best possible start to school at Nukumea.

If you have not been into the school office recently, you may have missed the latest additions that have completed this warm, welcoming space. Earlier in the year, we ran an art competition around our school values and the winning entries are now on display in the Office and we think they look amazing!

Before and After School Care

It has been awesome to see our onsite Before and After School Care start up this week. It feels like another big step forward and a sure sign of the growth and progress of our school. The Before School Care begins from 7am and the After School Care has a variety of pick up times to meet the needs of different families.

Book Club

The Library has proven to be a very popular place at school this year. Recently this has taken another big step forward as a group of students have started working on creating their own books. They have been incredibly busy in class and at lunchtimes, writing and illustrating their books - like the amazing two examples above by Xavier. We are now sourcing a new shelf so our students books can have a central place to be cared for in the library once they are published!

Mitey

In our first few weeks of being a Mitey school, ākonga have been introduced to ideas about their feelings and the things that make them the same and different to others. Understanding emotions is really beneficial for our mental health, because it allows us to express our emotions, including kōrero (talk) about them, regulate our emotions, and respond appropriately. This can make a huge difference to the way we step out into the world. We call this ‘having emotional literacy’. That’s why Mitey teaches ākonga to recognise and name emotions in ourselves, so we can also have empathy and support those around us.

Beyond the classroom, check in with how your children are feeling as part of your daily routine – Create a habit where they offer one word to do this and you offer one in return with how you are feeling to build a bank of new emotion words you use in your whare.

Auckland Regional Dental Service

Our Dental Van visit was postponed earlier in the year due to a mechanical issue with the van. It is now going to be onsite next week.

The Auckland Regional Dental Service aim to deliver equitable service access for our tamariki/children. To do this, we will be increasing the frequency of our mobile dental facilities into and out of schools and focusing on examining and treating tamariki that we have identified as having higher dental needs and are most overdue. This means that not all tamariki will be seen on the mobile unit at the time of each planned visit.
