International Student-Athlete Spotlight

Sonia Alfieri, Bemidji State Women's Soccer

Growing up in Europe, soccer was a way of life. I was always around it, either watching or playing with friends. However, my competitive journey didn’t kick off until a friend in high school asked me to fill in as a goalie. Initially, it was just a temporary gig for a few games, but those few games turned into two years, igniting a passion that would lead me to Bemidji State University.

Cultural Shifts

Transitioning from Europe to the United States introduced me to a very different sports culture. In Europe, soccer dominates, and we follow leagues from all over the continent. Here, in the US, there’s a wider variety of sports that capture people’s interests. However, the love for the game remains the same. Tactically, I’ve noticed some differences, but the essence of soccer transcends borders.

A Balancing Act

Balancing academics and athletics has been my routine since I was about 12 years old. I used to juggle multiple sports along with schoolwork. It’s all about habit and organization — knowing when assignments are due and ensuring they’re completed ahead of time so I can focus on practice and games. At Bemidji State, I’ve been able to pursue my studies in environmental science while playing the sport I love, and that’s been a dream come true.

Weathering the Storm

One of the biggest challenges I faced when moving to Bemidji was adapting to the weather. I was used to cold weather, but nothing like the harsh Minnesota winters. However, I’ve learned to embrace it and find beauty in the snow-covered landscapes. When I miss home, technology bridges the gap, allowing me to stay connected with family and friends. The friendships I’ve made here, especially with my teammates, have been my rock during tough times. They welcomed me with open arms, and I’ve never felt like an outsider.

Taking the Leap

To any international student dreaming of pursuing college athletics in the USA, I’d say just go for it. It’s a leap of faith, but it’s been the best decision of my life. I’ve had the privilege of sharing unforgettable moments with people who have become lifelong friends. Now, as I finish my journey at Bemidji State, I look forward to adding more memorable achievements to my list. Being part of this community, both academically and athletically, has been a blessing, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Every challenge, every triumph, it’s all part of the journey, and I’m grateful for every moment.
