Stories with STEAM Short Film Competition

SUBMISSION DEADLINE FEBRUARY 7th, 2025!

Submitted films should creatively engage STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and/or Arts (e.g. performance, dance, theater, music, painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.) related themes, ideas, characters, and stories. Films may be animation, fictional narratives, documentary, experimental or other.

Films will be judged by a panel of filmmakers, industry professionals, STEM and the Arts professionals, etc. to compete for prizes.

Selected films will be screened and awarded at the Stories with STEAM The Appalachian Circuit featuring Small Town Universe event held at Marshall University’s Joan C Edwards Performing Arts Center in Huntington, West Virginia on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

Guidelines

  • Submissions are free.
  • Films must come from Appalachian makers.
  • Three Categories: Middle School/High School, Higher Education Students, General Public.
  • CONTENT: Films should be a maximum of 5 minutes in length, including credits. Longer films will not be considered for screening.
  • Films must be suitable for all ages (rated G). The Stories with STEAM Short Film Competition reserves the right to determine the eligibility of any work submitted.
  • All films submitted must have a completion date after January 1, 2022.
  • Films selected for screening at the festival will be notified on February 25, 2025 and announced on our website shortly thereafter.
  • If your film is selected, you will be notified with specifications on providing a high-quality digital video file for screening during the Stories with STEAM The Appalachian Circuit event on March 12, 2025.
  • Applicants are solely responsible for obtaining all necessary rights and permissions for third-party materials included in their films, including but not limited to music, trademarks, logos, copyrights, and other intellectual property rights. SWSSFC expressly disclaims all liability or responsibility for any violations of the foregoing.

Fill out all required information in the online form and click SUBMIT at the bottom of the form. We prefer to receive screening copies as online streaming links – preferably Vimeo or YouTube. Please add the public URL to your submission form and include a password if it is password protected.
