Welcome back to the new academic year!
We are delighted to welcome three new members of staff to the Pilgrim Academy family: Mrs Gregory (Y1 & Y2), Miss Eccles (Y5) and Miss Woodcock (wraparound care).
Read on to find out about the highlights of the term so far...
The Pod
Our successful Breakfast Club has been extended to an After School Club as well. After consulting with pupils and staff, we had a shortlist of names for our wrapround care, linked to bodies of water. Following the vote, our Breakfast Club and After School Club has been named 'The Pod'.
Mrs Ridge and Miss Woodcock welcome children from 7:30am into the Breakfast Pod, and until 5:30pm in the After School Pod.
The children thoroughly enjoy playing, being creative and artistic, and of course the delicious snacks and drinks!

Frogs
Frogs have had a fantastic start to their learning this term. The children have been working hard to become super mathematicians. They have enjoyed working in the inside and outside learning environments.
The children have welcomed their parents to the ‘Bug Club’ sessions we have every Wednesday and love sharing stories with the adults and their friends.
Cygnets
Cygnets have had a great start to their year one journey. They have been looking at the artist Henri Rosseau and created some lovely portraits. In maths we have been focusing on place value and in English we have been looking at poetry.
Swans
This term Swans have been reading ‘Traction Man is Here!’ by Mini Grey.
This week the children have written a thank you card to Granny from Traction Man to say thank you for his special gift which helped him save the spoons from the evil sweeping brush!
The children have written some fantastic sentences – well done Year 2, keep up the hard work!
ClassDojo
As most of you will already know, our new reward system at Pilgrim is ClassDojo. Children can earn dojo points for following the school values: courage, kindness and respect, or for doing homework, being on task, teamwork and many more!
Pupils are so proud to tell us how many dojo points they have. As they earn more, they have the chance to redeem them for a prize, or save them up for a bigger prize!
If you haven't connected to your child on ClassDojo yet, ask at the school office, or speak to your child's teacher who can send you a link.
Kingfishers
The Kingfishers have got off to a ‘flying’ start this year. We have enjoyed diving into our English book called 'The Rhythm of the Rain', and most recently completed a hot seating activity where the children took on the role of a character in the book and were asked questions as the character.
We have worked incredibly hard in maths to perfect our presentation skills, working on how to lay out our learning and show our workings correctly.
Our history journey is just getting started, but we are loving learning about the Stone Age and discussing how everything was so different in the past.
We have especially enjoyed all our active lessons and learning lots of outdoor games in PE that we have been able to play ourselves on the playground.
We cannot wait to see what is ahead for us over the rest of this year 😊
Turtles
This month Turtles have been working on Place Value in maths. The children have been working with numbers up to 10,000 and have shown some excellent knowledge. They have enjoyed working through reasoning and problem solving questions and challenging themselves with the 'Delve Deeper' questions. In English we have been reading ‘UG Boy Genius Of The Stone Age.’ The children have been immersed in their reading by role playing as UG and living back in the Stone Age, they have written Diary extracts, advice notes to UG, postcards from the past and the future! They have worked really hard in their English lessons to fully immerse themselves back to the Stone Age and their effort has shown in their brilliant writing.
During the afternoons the children have become Abstract Art Artists! They used a mix of warm colours and cool colours to create their very own piece of artwork to show joy, movement and happiness. Turtles have enjoyed their music lessons and learning how to play the trumpets!
Seastars
Seastars have a great start to the year and have settled in well into their new class. We have been learning about the story 'A Song from Somewhere Else' and have already started to use our writing skills to write a diary entry and a letter as the character, Frank. In maths we have been working hard on our place value skills and working out problems involving numbers to 1,000,000.
In history we have been enjoying learning about Ancient Greece, including looking at artefacts and learning about gods and goddesses. We have also explored different kinds of maps in geography. The children have loved learning about light and investigating how light travels alongside how the eye works.
We are looking forward to continuing to learn more about the Ancient Greeks and using our art skills to create some pop art of our own.
Orcas
Orcas have had a fantastic start to the new school year, so far.
In music they have created a ground bass and notated it in letters and musical notes.
They have especially enjoyed working with Hull University on the SuDs project, (sustainable drainage system) water workshops, creating ways to slow the flow of water to prevent flooding.
Blue Whales
Blue Whales started the new school year as they mean to go on, by setting their own goals and targets for the busy year ahead. From wanting to improve handwriting and becoming quicker at times table recall, to perfecting a back-tuck-jump in cheerleading; it’s clear our wonderful Blue Whales know what they want and how they are now going to achieve it.
In maths all children have worked diligently to master place value and rounding, whilst in English we have enjoyed reading about the power of extraordinary friendship in the book ‘The Song From Somewhere Else’. Throughout all afternoons, we have spent time learning and engaging in team building activities to help develop a true sense of friendship, support and belonging amongst our Blue Whales team. What a great way to start the year!
