Film photography is making a comeback. It is a fun, tactile and creative alternative to the digital world. Become a better photographer with this hands-on workshop which introduces you to the principles of black and white photography using 35mm camera and then developing and printing your photographs the darkroom.
Program:
Lesson 1: Fundamentals of using a film camera
- How to focus
- Set ISO and select shutter and aperture for correct exposure
- Use a handheld light meter
- Load film
- Start taking photographs in studio or outside if light permits
Lesson 2: More photography and develop your roll of B&W film
- Finish off the roll of film with some more photography
- Develop your roll of film in our darkroom - this may sound simple, but there are quite some tricks to getting your film out of your camera into a film developing tank and then getting chemistry and timing right - your teacher Orlando will step you though this process
Lesson 3: Printing in the Darkroom
- Selecting the negative to print - the usual process is to print a contact sheet, but to date students prefer to go straight into making test prints as it increases the number of prints you can take home
- Learning how to use an enlarger
- Making test prints
- Printing your first 8x10 inch print
Week 4: Second Print
- Having another go at your first print if needed, or producing a second print
- Fine tuning exposure
- Simple dodging and burning (making some parts of your print lighter or darker)
Course outcomes include:
- Introduction to 35mm manual SLR camera usage
- Film exposure and techniques
- Black and white film developing
- Darkroom enlarging and printing - take home your own 8x10 inch prints
You will be able to use our film cameras, film, chemicals and photographic paper are included in the course fee - just bring yourself. If you have a 35mm film camera, please bring this along.
