Canbury School Newsletter 3rd may 2024. ISSUE 312

Dear Families, Friends, Students and Staff.

How can we be back at Friday again? But we are! I'm grateful it's a Bank Holiday on Monday (and school will be closed) as our students will definitely need the extra lie in. They have all been so busy.

From male and female football teams playing in a tournament at Fulham Football Club's training ground at Worcester Park, to two days of the Art GCSE practical, to more than half the school taking part in a mini marathon in Richmond Park and a Spanish GCSE speaking paper, our students have had their heads down. Staff also took part in a training session on on-line safety and how we can keep our students safe.

Next week it's all go again, with more public exams, plus the Year 11s Leavers' Breakfast and a 'Getting Ready for Canbury' morning for our in-coming Year 7s who will be joining us in September. It will be here before we know it.

So all that remains for me to say is, enjoy the Bank Holiday Weekend (Mrs Porter told us all about why we are having it at assembly today), and see you on Tuesday!

Mrs Rich – Head.

Upcoming dates for your diary.

Monday 6th May: Bank Holiday Monday - SCHOOL CLOSED.

Thursday 9th May: Leavers Breakfast in school.

Friday 29th May: Whole School Sponsored Walk.

Monday 27th - Friday 31st May: Half-term break.

Mr Labinjo's back!

It's been exceedingly good to see Science teacher Mr Labinjo back in the Canbury Laboratory. Mr Labinjo has returned to help out with Science until the end of this School year. This week he got stuck into a practical with the Year 10 students, who you see here. Student Mani looks in particular as if he is given complete attention to the lesson. Well done that man!

Canbury Mini Marathon- didn't they do well?

On Thursday we took part in the TCS Mini London Marathon. This was a national event where schools could hold their own mini marathon to promote running and the importance of physical activity. In total we had 35 students and staff take part in the event, heading out into Richmond Park in different groups and completing a variety routes. Well done to all those involved!

Some participants were happy to be photographed....some not quite so keen.

Sitting pretty, and look at those lush green trees!
We were SO lucky with the weather too!

Superb sporting prowess all round.

On Monday, two of our football teams competed in a tournament hosted by Fulham Football Club, writes Mr Temple. The girls team competed really well, with some impressive skills and teamwork on display. One notable goal they scored included a fantastic passage of play starting with Katie at the back, who cleared the ball out wide to Hattie, who skillfully threaded the ball to Reenie with the outside of her foot. Reenie finished off this beautiful move by smashing the ball into the back of the net with an icy first-time finish. It was awesome watching the synergy shown among the girls, especially considering we had players in four different year groups (7, 10, 11, 13)

L-R: Katie, Reenie, Ellie, Chloe, Hattie and Olivia.

The boys team impressed with four magnificent displays in their tournament, going on to win their league by four points. They remained undefeated throughout their campaign with four wins out of four, scoring 11 goals in total and not conceding any. The teamwork that the players showed was five-star, showing an understanding of how the whole is more important than the individual, and this was rewarded in their dominant performances.

L-R: Ethan, Josh, Hugo, Morgan and Matt.

I am really proud of how these teams are developing, and I look forward to seeing how far we can go.

Mario Cart - proof it's definitely on the Curriculum.

Mr Hussain was so impressed at Brendan's work he wanted it shared in the Newsletter. Well done Brendan!

Cracking work in ICT from Y10 Brendan.

Prefect News

'Fancy your hand at becoming a young leader? Do you want to change the world, encourage people to be more thoughtful about our environment, or perhaps you're desperate to get the school community fit and healthy? If so, you're in luck. Information regarding the applications for the 2024 to 2025 prefect roles and responsibilities has been emailed out to families and students. If you would like further information, please do speak to Ms Boggi. And get thinking, if a prefect role doesn't exist, and you think it should, then have a chat with Ms Boggi about that, too.

Helping our teenage children - so very different from adults, but we were ALL teens once.

How easy would life be if we could unearth the secret ingredient to cracking the parenting teen code. Imagine! Well fear not, as a handy little pamphlet entitled JUST that, has found its way onto Ms Chorazyczewska's desk. Written by clinical psychologist Dr Louise Hayes, it's a surprisingly short read, but is packed with some very helpful tips. Indeed staff have already dived in to refresh and expand their knowledge of how the teen mind works so very differently to their older role models. If any parents/carers would like a copy (we only have a complete pdf version) please email Mrs Bate (jbate@canburyschool.co.uk) and she will send you a copy.

Fundraising Corner

Well done Olivia in Year 7 who took part in a sponsored swim last week to raise money for Cancer Research. Olivia and her friend raised an astonishing £450. Really well done swimmers. That amount of money raised will make a very real difference.

Then on Sunday, May 19th, tens of thousands of distinguished gentlefolk in hundreds of cities worldwide will don their cravats, tweak their moustaches, press their tweed and sit astride their classic and vintage styled motorcycles to raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and men’s mental health programmes.

Mr Hussain does love his motorbike, and what a good cause to be getting on it for.

Our very own resident petrol-head Mr Hussain (his words, not ours!) will be joining the ride in London and you can help him raise money for these great causes. Just click on the link here.

As you can see he is a passionate motorcycle enthusiast who loves his classic BMWs. As well as participating in a previous “Distinguished Gentleman's ride” he has ridden all around Western Europe, above seen somewhere in Germany and somewhere in Northern Spain, below seen somewhere in Italy. We wonder where his next adventure will take him?
