The Baylis Court Debate team attended the NADAS debate competition on Wednesday the 5th February at Little Heath School near Reading.

The competition was an exciting one, with teams of three from schools and sixth forms all over Berkshire competing. Each team got to choose a topic of their choice. One speaker on each team was ‘the proposer’ and gave a speech in favour of the topic, one speaker on each team is ‘the opposer’ and gave the argument against. The final team member introduced, narrated and summarised the debate as well as invited the judges to ask questions.

Baylis Court School put forward two teams of Year 10 and Year 11 students. Team 1 was comprised of Uzo, Haddy and Aaeesha, and they debated the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Team 2 was composed of Ayesha, Zunaira and Noor Ul Eeman, and Team 2 was well supported by Aleena who unfortunately could not attend. Mr Hartley and Mrs Nelson also attended to support the Baylis teams!

Both teams had compelling arguments for and against and the quality of their thinking as well as the delivery of their speeches was outstanding. The panel of judges gave all the competing teams points out of 100. Both teams got good reviews from the judges despite their being stiff competition from the best debaters around the county, many of whom were older sixth formers. The highest scoring teams were selected to go through to the final in March and Baylis Court Team 1 of Uzo, Haddy and Aaeesha went through with flying colours. We are proudly looking forward to them representing Baylis in the final on the 12th March and confident the debating skills they have built up give them a strong chance of winning the NADAS competition and the £300 prize! All members had an enjoyable afternoon and a great experience.
