Autumn Term Highlights 2024

Welcome to the 2024 Autumn Term edition of St Hugh's Highlights, giving you an overview of this term's activities...

We welcomed everyone back to school after the summer holidays and our School Captains and Vice Captains started in their roles.

Topics, Trips and Visits

The arrival of snow caused much excitement and Nursery could not wait to explore!

Pre-school took their role play very seriously while working in the vets. Everyone liked talking about their own pets and how we need to care for them.

Reception Class learnt all about colour and came to school in their brightest clothing for their Colourful Dress-Up Day.

Year 1 got creative in their Art lessons. They painted sunflowers after learning about the work of Van Gogh.

They made fabulous pumpkins ready for Halloween.

Year 2 travelled the world and learnt about famous explorers over the years.

They loved finding out about different explorers and had fun completing lots of different tasks Miss Henderson shared with them - from constructing rafts to smelling spices!

Year 3 took a trip to the mosque in Lincoln as part of their RE lessons.

Years 3 and 4 travelled to Burghley House together to learn all about the Tudors.

Year 4 enjoyed a day in Leicester visiting a mandir and sampled a traditional meal.

Year 5 pupils are now experts on the Victorians after their visit to Burghley House.

They had an amazing time at Bell's Pumpkin Patch investigating forces.

Year 6 took the short walk to The Cottage Museum in the village to find out more about the Edwardian era.

They were very excited to to meet celebrated children's author, Katherine Rundell, at an event held by Waterstone's in Lincoln.

In Science, Year 7 used sweets as a novel way to make models of cells.

They continued on the theme of food when they learnt about the work of Tjalf Sparnaay in their Art lessons.

Year 8 spent the day at The National Holocaust Centre and Museum. They explored the exhibitions and were honoured to listen to the story of a holocaust survivor.

In Art, they got creative and learnt how to make their own cyanotype prints.

Megan, Toby and Will had success at the Schools' Mace Competition and are gearing themselves up for round two in January.

Whole School Events

We joined together to celebrate the European Day of Languages.

To mark the event, Mr Wilson and his team cooked an amazing lunch with food from Spain, Germany, Hungary, Italy and France.

Our Harvest Service was held in St Peter's Church.

Our School Council launched Anti-Bullying Week and we all wore odd socks for the day.

We congregated on the Headmaster's Lawn for our Remembrance Service and laid handmade wreaths.

Forest School

It's hard to believe we were wearing sun hats at the start of the term when we picked blackberries.

We reminded ourselves of fire safety by reading the Fiery Fox.

We enjoyed watching the seasons changing and collected conkers.

We created detailed maps of the wood and marked the boundaries.

Year 3 had been reading The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark in class so we decided to make our very own clay owls out in the woods.

The class even dissected owl pellets which was fascinating!

Year 4 had been learning about the Tudors so we whittled writing implements from holly and collected alder cones to make ink.

Year 5 had been learning all about the water cycle in Geography so they ventured to the brook to take water samples and tested to see if it was safe to drink!

We learnt some basic first aid skills.

We celebrated Bonfire Night and learnt how to enjoy sparklers safely.

We created some fabulous paintings of fireworks using conkers.

We learnt new skills to make stickmen santas.

We made gonks from clay and even learnt the skill of makrame knots to make woollen ones!

We made Christmas decorations from our woodland finds.

We enjoyed panettone and festive snacks together around the campfire.

Sport

Cross Country

We welcomed the start of the Cross Country season with our Year 3s eager to join their first race!

We competed in events held by Brooke Priory, Ranby and Witham Hall.

Our runners can't wait for the rest of the season!

Hockey

It was a very wet start to the season but that did not dampen the girls' spirits!

Our U9s had a range of fixtures and took part in a coaching clinic. We even held our own St Hugh's Hockey Festival with the help of our U13 team.

Our U11A team competed in the IAPS Hockey Festival.

The whole U11 team was rewarded with cake for their fantastic effort throughout the season.

Our U13 team completed the season with an evening match at Lindum Hockey Club and it was lovely to welcome family and friends to mark the occasion.

Rugby

We were thrilled to kick off the rugby season.

Some of our youngest players had their first taste of the game.

We have enjoyed fixtures, attended festivals and hosted our own.

Both our U11 and U13s competed in the IAPS Rugby Festivals.

The U13s travelled to Boston RFC for their final match and siblings were on hand to fly the flag - quite literally!

Swimming

As always, we've been busy in the pool with our lessons.

We also welcomed schools to join us for our U9 and U11 Invitational Swimming Galas.

We finished the term in full Christmas spirit.

The Boarding House

We welcomed everyone back to the Boarding House and Toby O took charge as House Captain.

We went bowling...

... and made the most of the light nights.

Our evenings were always fun whether enjoying a spot of science...

...playing games together...

...or enjoying food together!

We carved pumpkins ready for Halloween...

... and enjoyed bonfire night together.

Our theme nights seem to get bigger and better each term...

... Hocus Pocus saw everyone don their best fancy dress for an evening of spook-tacular activities...

... the return of I'm a Celebrity challenged our boarders to overcome their fears!

With Christmas upon us it was time to decorate the Boarding House...

... and crack open the Christmas puzzle.

Our Winter Wonderland evening was the perfect finale to festive celebrations in the Boarding House...

Mrs Warwick-Smith has lots of exciting events planned for next term. You can check them out on the School Calendar: www.st-hughs.lincs.sch.uk/school-calendar and email ssmith@st-hughs.lincs.sch.uk to book.

Christmas in School

The Bake Off returned for our Christmas Fair with our judges doing a fantastic job yet again.

The Cauliflower Christmas Card Competition brought out everyone's artistic side and choosing the winner was not a enviable task.

The Magical Christmas Jigsaw truly was a magical nativity. Our Nursery, Pre-school and Pre Prep children should be incredibly proud of themselves.

We joined together for Christmas lunch sporting our best Christmas jumpers.

Thanks to Mr Wilson and his team!

Our Christmas Concert was a festive evening of music.

A huge round of applause to all our musicians. Your performances were superb!

Our Carol Service at St Peter's Church was a fittingly festive way to end the term.

Thank you to Rev. Sally Clifton for the joyful service.

To all our families and friends, have a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year!
