Dissertation Help Guide By the Psychology Technicians

1. Can we support your idea?

Once you have met your dissertation supervisor and have decided on a project idea, you may need technical support to get your idea up and running!

Please complete the form below to inform us of your research requirements, or alternatively, pop us an email.

2. Think about your research design

Meet with your supervisor and decide whether you would like to complete an online study or an in-person or lab study.

Ensure you consider ethics when you design your study, including your Sona advert, anonymity status for your participant information sheet (PIS) and Sona credits. More on Sona in section 5!

3. PsychTech support

The Psychology Technicians may be able to support your research with technical expertise and loan equipment. If you require PsychTech support with your research study, please click the button below and complete the form:

Psychtech Study Suite

A focused space with expert support on hand.

The PsychTech Study Suite is a dedicated workspace for making progress on dissertations and research projects. Settle in, get to work, and know that the PsychTech team is right there with you, working alongside and ready to help with tools like QuestionPro, Sona, data cleaning, or any technical part of your research journey.

Whether you’re cleaning data, building a survey, or just trying to get that intro written, come and study with us!

4. Create your study

Visit PsychTech for useful information, help pages and dates for training and drop-in sessions for QuestionPro. Please use only the link on the PsychTech website to create your QuestionPro account.

TIP: save the questionpro URL to your browser favourites for future use!

To access a Psychology Lab, please complete the Student Lab Access Request Form

If you require lab time you will need to book this either using the lab calendar or via the Room Bookings system (you will be informed which on lab induction).

5. Sona

If you wish to use Sona to recruit participants for your study then you will need to request a researcher account. A link to the request form, the school's Sona rules and how to add and manage studies can be found on the Sona support page on the PsychTech website.

You can configure Sona and QuestionPro to redirect participants back to Sona to receive their credits automatically once they have submitted their response. This guide shows you how!

6. Collect data

Collect your data and remember to action (award or reject) any stated Sona credits within 2 working days of individuals' participation.

The Psychology Technicians may follow up with researchers who have not actioned study participants' credits within this time.

7. Return equipment

Any equipment loaned from PsychTech will need to be returned by the date agreed. Lost, damaged or unreturned equipment is expected to be reimbursed to the university by the borrower.

8. Export data

Export your data from your study/survey platform.

For QuestionPro, open your survey and go to Analytics > Manage Data > Export and choose your export settings.

Look out for QuestionPro drop-in study session dates on our website!

9. Data cleaning

Check out the PsychTech webpage on data cleaning including Excel, Jasp, Jamovi and SPSS

10. Data analysis

If you require support with your data analysis, including determining, performing and interpreting statistical tests, please complete this form to determine how Maths and Stats Help (MASH) at the University Library can best support you.

11. Close down your study

Remember to close your survey and Sona advert, if applicable, after you have completed collecting data.

12. Further support

The University Library provides additional support for writing development, statistics, finding and using information sourcesm and referencing. Please see the Library Website for further information and available webinars and workshop sessions.
