“YEAR 13 LEAVERS 2024”
Mr Myles Hogarty
College Principal
Today we gather as a College community to farewell our Year 13 Leavers as they complete their last days of their secondary education.
This College, as many of you agree, has been your second home for the last five or seven years.
The place where you have grown physically, academically and spiritually. The place where you have practised our Catholic and Lasallian traditions, our rituals and built relationships/ friendships/ Brotherhood with one another.
Our Scriptural Theme “Rejoice In Hope- Persevere In Prayer” - this year was chosen very deliberately as our mantra after what we have been challenged by over the last 4 years.
We thank you for embracing this phrase and I hope that it has been of some motivation for you as you dealt with the challenges before you at school and at home.
Leavers of 2024 You will have many memories of your experiences of life at De La Salle, these memories will be carried with you as you leave and will be etched permanently into your memories and become part of your character, they can never be taken away from you.
As young men you have laughed, cried, loved, dealt with set-backs, yet you have shown resilience and perseverance through this, which can only add to your character and spirit.
Just as important as the classes you attended, were the sports events and music performances , cultural festivals, the Retreats, Camps, Field Trips, Masses, Liturgies and Assemblies.
As a Catholic, Lasallian school our Vision our goal is to produce, “Great Men of Faith, Service, Community and Excellence.” I believe that we have done this for our Leavers of 2024.
We have educated Young men who leave us and who can make a positive contribution to the Community and make their community a better place.
As young men you have been fortunate to be offered such a range of opportunities, these didn’t happen by chance. These were provided by committed teachers who gave you these varied opportunities out of their deep and genuine concern for you, I encourage you to take some time before you leave, to go and personally thank these people for what they have done for you.
Your College wishes to thank you for sharing your own talents and your efforts in making your College a better place.
Thank you for your contributions to the Academic, Sports, Music, Culture and Faith areas of De La Salle, these are the pillars of your education.
While the opportunities are there, without you stepping forward and throwing yourself into these areas, we as a College would not grow and improve.
Today you experience your last whole College Assembly, you being in the presence of 1000 young men you call “brothers”. The last opportunity to sing your College song surrounded by your classmates.
That is a special experience, one that you may probably not experience again, savour it.
This daily support and the presence of your peers is the thing that you will miss most. Our Old Boys who speak to you, mention this often.
I urge you to keep strong and committed to your faith, never underestimate the power and gift of prayer as a daily focus in your life.
Be courageous young Christians, Rejoice In Hope- Persevere In Prayer and own your own story, it is exactly what your College and your families would expect you to do.
Let the values of Respect and Humility that you have learnt at De La Salle, be seen in your final acts of school but also shared with the many new people that you will interact with over the next few years. We wear this tie as a symbol, the Cross is a constant reminder to us that our College is founded on the example of Christ and that bonds us with our Catholic Lasallian community. I am proud to wear it and our efforts as a Staff are always to lift and improve our College community inside and outside. You are challenged to do the same.
Let people see by your actions, that wearing that Cross on your chest for all these years has made you into a young man who has not only learnt the Gospel values of Christ but lives these out in the relationships that you have with others.
While we farewell you today as your classes end, it is certainly not the last we want to see of you.
This is your College and you are always welcome to return and give back to it and the young men here. That is “Brotherhood” in action. Many of you have benefitted from the action of our Old Boys who have supported our Retreats, Mentoring, Camps, Rugby, League, Basketball, Debating, Music, Cultural Groups and Careers advice, you can do the same.
If we have been successful as a College in producing “Great men of Community,” we welcome you back to participate in and support these opportunities for your younger Brothers.
While today you may feel a little sad that you are leaving. Be happy that you have had a great Catholic, Lasallian education.
Be heartened that you have been at such a warm and nurturing school that has always placed you at the heart of all its plans.
I am sure that I speak for the rest of the College in wishing you our best as you prepare for your final exams and we pray that God keeps you safely in the palm of his hand as you travel on your new paths as young men.
God Bless you all.

Camp Lasalle
At the end of Term 3 and the start of the school holidays we joined Francis Douglas and John Paul College at Port Waikato School Camp with some year 7 students and a group of senior volunteers for Camp LaSalle.
The students had a great time with fun activities, team building and spiritual nourishment.
It was a wonderful opportunity to come together with our two Lasallian schools and build new relationships and strengthen the Lasallian Brotherhood.
Thank you to Mr Ngan Woo, Mr Tuli, Mrs Apelu-Tulisi, Ms Felise, Mrs Olive, Miss Puleiku, Ms Iobu and Ms Tanuvasa for giving up some of their holiday to help with our Camp!

End of Year assessment for Year 7 - 10 and De La Salle Certificate
End of Year assessments for Year 7 - 10 have already started this term with STAR and PAT testing. We will be able to provide excellent achievement and progress data at the end of 2024/start of 2025.
All Year 7 to 10 teachers will also be completing PaCT Judgments for Reading, Writing and Mathematics. This will help determine who sits the Literacy and Numeracy Corequisite tests in Year 10 and Year 11 in May 2025.
We will be running a Year 9 and 10 Assessment week in Week 6. Attached is the timetable for Exams and the criteria for success in the Year 9 and 10 assessments. Check in with your son to see if he knows what he is being assessed on. Encourage the boys to attend the tuition afterschool and to ask teachers for help and to provide old exams to practice on.
2024 NZQA Candidate Information Sheet
Junior Exam Timetable and Topics 2024
We have also provided Year 7 – 10 students an update on progress against the De La Salle Certificate. Final points will be awarded after the Junior Assessment Week in week 6. Service Hours must be entered by the end of Week 4 to be counted towards your son's total.
SENIOR ASSESSMENT
Technology and Visual Arts Portfolios - Externals
Congratulations to Mr Jackson Tan, Mrs Salome Tanuvasa and Ms Jessie Phillips and their students who have busy submitting their Visual Art portfolios in Painting and Design. Similarly, we have seen strong submissions from the Technology faculty and Design Visual Communication with Mr Brebner, Mr Singh, Ms Dromgool, Mr Hawkins, Mr Dobson and Mr Kumar.
NCEA Exams for seniors
Exams start next Tuesday November 7 and run throughout the month. Students have received their Exam Admission Slips. These must be brought to every exam. Students can also find a copy on their NZQA Login. Don’t forget to check your Admission Slip and Exam Timetable!
We wish our men all the best. Welcome back to Mrs Barbara Warrender who is our NZQA Exam Centre Manager.
NCEA Progress – Almost there! Don’t stop until the end!
We have some great results even before the NZQA Exams start
Year 13 NCEA Level 3
We have over 10 students on track for an Excellence Endorsement and over 40 who could achieve a Merit Endorsement. This is much higher than 2023. Fifty-seven students have already achieved their NCEA Level 3 Certificate.
Year 12 NCEA Level 2
Over half of students [72] have already achieved their NCEA Level 2 Certificate. However, there are 7 students yet to achieve NCEA Level 1.
Again, we have around 10 students are on track for an Excellence Endorsement and around 25 who are on track for a Merit Endorsement.
Year 11 NCEA Level 1
2024 has been a much more challenging year when it has come to tracking progress at NCEA Level 1. Teachers and students are both learning how to work with the new NCEA standards. For example, Year 11 students have more than twice as many credits coming from external assessment compared to previous years. This means we will not know about final achievement rates until 2025. As of 12 October, 35students have already achieved NCEA Level 1.
We have identified a number of Year 11 and 12 students who are on track for success in NCEA. However, there is a significant risk that they are left stranded just below 60 credits or without meeting the Literacy or Numeracy Requirement. We are asking these students to continue to attend school during the NCEA Exam Period to complete internally assessed standards in Mathematics, Religious Studies, English or Health. We will also spend time preparing for exams. Students will attend P1 - 3 from Thursday 31 October until Friday 15 November 8.35 a.m. - 12 p.m. each day.
A reminder that all students are able to study in the library in this time.

Farewell to Our Year 13 Students
This week, we are farewelling our Year 13 students, many of whom have been with us for five or seven years. It’s a bittersweet moment for all of us as they prepare to leave the familiar environment of De La Salle College and embark on new challenges in the wider world. For our students, this marks the culmination of years of hard work, growth, and discovery.
Throughout their time here, we hope they have not only gained knowledge but also embraced the values of respect, service, and integrity that are at the heart of our college. The bonds of brotherhood they have formed during their journey—whether through sports, academics, or shared experiences—are a testament to the strength of our community. These relationships, along with the lessons learned, will serve them well as they face the opportunities and trials of the next chapter of their lives.
By the time you read this, our Year 13s will have had their leavers' assembly and celebrated their leavers' Mass. These events mark the end of their time with us, but they also remind them of the faith and resilience they will carry into the future. As they prepare for their upcoming NCEA examinations, we wish them the very best and hope they leave with fond memories of their time at De La Salle College.
On behalf of the Pastoral Care Team, we offer our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes. We are proud of what you have achieved and excited to see where your paths will take you next.
Go well, Year 13!
Academic Year 7/8
Assistant Principal- Mr Herbert Tanuvasa
Term 4 has started and these first few weeks have been very busy for the young men of Year 7/8. Parents have met with Mr Anderton to prepare their sons for Marine Camp, soccer has started with Brother Anash, basketball practices have begun with Mr Anderton, Lexile Millionaires went on their Rainbows End trip, Year 7 “Beniltien” vs “Sologuel” touch games are happening every lunch break with Mr Tanuvasa and Mr Brown, Fred Hollows Baking sale fundraising happened on Wednesday, and the homework centre kicked off again with Ms Kuresa and Mrs Olive.
One thing that happened which is new to De La Salle is sailing! Our Year 7 students spent a day out at the Hyundai Marine Centre learning how to sail. Perhaps the next Peter Burling will come from De La Salle? 7OLI were lucky enough to be on 7Sharp as Project Jonah invited them to be first people to go inside their life-sized model of a whale! The Year 7 boys were taught fundamentals of sailing such as wind direction and tying ropes before going out in small groups on RS Quest boats. From there they progressed to being in pairs on Optimist boats. Probably the most amazing thing the boys discovered was how to sail INTO the wind! We have to thank the Navigators Sailing team for their excellent course showing our boys how to sail in such a short time.
If we want our students to be global citizens, they will need experiences that are outside of their usual norms. I was greatly encouraged that our Year 7 students were not overawed by their sailing experience and took everything in stride. This points to the hard work that is being done at home by parents, striving to give their son/s opportunities and help develop their global perspective. No easy feat during our current cost of living crisis. Well done whanau! Let us continue to work together for the betterment of the young men 😊

a remarkable and humbling journey
-Caleb Williams and the Year 13 Prefect Team
Since we formed our year-level leadership group at the end of Year 9, we’ve had a remarkable and humbling journey. Mr. Jay has worked closely with us from the very beginning, helping us grow as leaders and consistently guiding us to develop valuable leadership skills. Together, we’ve launched several successful initiatives that have made a lasting impact on our school community, including the introduction of bucket hats and DLS Ie Faitaga for our year level, organizing regular Bible studies, promoting brotherhood and unity among students, and establishing the Big Brother program to mentor our younger brothers. These initiatives reflect our belief that leadership is not about wearing a badge, but about making a meaningful difference. We’re incredibly grateful to our Head Boy, Troy, the deputies who have worked closely with the prefects and our Dean Mr. Jay over the years, helping us achieve these milestones together.
We’ve worked well as a team, and we’re proud of everything we’ve accomplished. As we look ahead, we hope that our younger brothers will continue to build on the foundations we’ve laid and take our work even further. Thank you to our families for supporting us on our journey.
Year 11 Leadership group
2024: A Year of Growth and Impact
This year, our students in the Year 11 Leadership group have displayed an exceptional effort to create a positive environment within the cohort and the school, while developing their own leadership skills. Throughout the year, the group collectively organised and contributed to various school activities, such as the Year 11 Wednesday Period 3 Activities, Year 11 Parent Partnership, the De La Salle Matariki Festival, and the De La Salle Art Expo. They played a crucial role in leading and taking charge of the cohort levels assembly, every Monday morning and the homeroom of the year competition using their initiative and showing independence.
Other than planning school projects and participating in service activities, our student leaders focused on building teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Their collaborative efforts helped strengthen the bond between the year 11 cohort and set the example for their brothers among the wider school community. These efforts were acknowledged as we finished off the year with an end of year assembly, awarding the students who have had outstanding achievements in service, attendance, weekly notes, sports, leadership and awarding the homeroom of the year.
As we reflect on the year, our Year 11 student leaders have learnt the responsibilities of a leader, that a true leader is a leader that serves with humility. The dedication and growth of our student leaders is a true settlement of our work this year. We look forward to seeing their continued impact on the school's future, and we would like to give huge thanks to Mr. Joynt (Year 11 Dean), Ms. Phillips, Mr. Felise, and all our Year 11 Homeroom Teachers for their constant support and contributions
2024 Young Enterprise Scheme (YES)
Regional Prize winners
Description automatically generatedYoung Enterprise program at De La Salle is continuing to grow from strength to strength. Building on the success of the last six years, another De La Salle College’s YES business team was invited to the 2024 YES Auckland Regional Finals held at the Auckland University Sir Owen G Glenn Building in Auckland City on 21st of October.
Lace is a business formed by Sofara Feo as the CEO and the Finance Manager, Jodeci Poua and Kayden Yorke as the Marketing and Production Managers and Malakai Tupou as the Production Manager. The Lace developed an educational toy designed fully out of sustainable wood to enhance children's fine motor skills. One toy design teaches them how to tie their shoes and the other one how to learn how to sew both keeping little hands busy and tying up loose ends! On the night, the group was recognised for high community importance and lots of potential. As a result, the boys were awarded the Excellence in Resilience Award. An amazing achievement, well done boys.
Pacific Health Science Academy
Year 13 HSA Vinaka Celebration
by HSA Director- Mr A Kumar
Our Year 13 Health Science Academy (HSA) students recently joined their peers from 11 other schools for a combined celebration, marking the end of their 3-year HSA journey. This special event took place at the SDA Auditorium in Papatoetoe, where students were recognized for their commitment and dedication.
Each student received a completion certificate and a gift, acknowledging their effort and growth throughout the program. The celebration was a proud moment, attended by their parents and families, who witnessed their achievements. It was both a prize-giving and a farewell event, capping off an important chapter in their academic lives.
Year 13 HSA Prize-Giving & Thanksgiving Dinner
On October 23rd, the Science Faculty of De La Salle College hosted a special prize-giving and Thanksgiving Dinner for our Year 13 HSA students at Mt Richmond Hotel. This event celebrated the students' success over the past three years in the HSA program, and it was an opportunity to express our appreciation for the staff who tirelessly managed and supported the academic and personal growth of these students.
During the evening, students shared heartfelt messages of gratitude, reflecting on the impact of the academy and the support they received from their teachers and mentors. The event was a wonderful opportunity to give thanks for the opportunities the academy has provided.
As these students embark on their next journey into further studies in 2025, we wish them all the success they deserve. We also encourage them to have a productive study break in preparation for their upcoming external exams. We have high expectations for their continued achievements and are confident they will make us proud. I thank all the science faculty staff for their contributions to the success of the class of 2024.
I would like to thank the science staff for their huge contributions towards success of the class of 2024.

Greetings! My name is Tuaopepe Misa Tufosa Emani and I am thrilled to embark on this journey with our Community at De La Salle College in our Careers Department.
My journey started in January of 1986 when as a teenager, I arrived in Aotearoa on a scholarship in search of a better future. It was also the beginning of a deep connection with my spiritual beliefs in the Catholic faith. Together with my husband Faumui Tovia and son Jozanam Fogalele, we are parishioners of St Anthony Parish in Mangere Bridge. My educational background from Mangere College to Manukau Institute of Technology and with Commercial expertise in Business and Retail Management, Finance and Economics, Transport, Manufacturing & Logistics have provided me with wonderful opportunities to inspire and explore various spiritual and cultural experiences.
'Ole Ala ile Pule ole Tautua' 'The pathway to leadership is through service'
Currently serving as a Treasurer of our Aulotu Samoa in our Samoan Community of St Anthony Parish and in various ministries, Word, Communion, Sunday School, Youth Group Advocate, Auckland Diocese Samoan Catholic Community Chaplaincy at Malaeola Centre and as Deputy Chair of our DLS PTFA Group.
QUICK FIRE THREE
Fun fact- I'm a thrill seeker! flying in a helicopter, abseiling from the fifth floor of the Novotel Hotel and finally water rafting and kayaking in Lake Rotoiti, Rotorua a once in a lifetime weekend experience, never to forget.
Favourite thing about working for De La Salle so far- People. People. People. A community of Love and Service.
As I embark on this new journey with De La Salle, it reminds me that we have many paths that lead us to our calling. I am blessed to be where I am today, in an administration role that supports our De La Salle sons to be men of Faith, Service, Community, Excellence.
Someone you admire and why- 1. God who gives life and a purpose to live life. 2. My Aiga and ancestors who led the way to where I am today.
It is an immense pleasure working with our De La Salle community. There is an open and giving heart amongst our people here and I firmly believe that is OUR greatest gift.
Soifua ma ia manuia.
Tuaopepe Misa Tufosa Emani
gateway & careers
First of all I we would love to welcome Mrs Tufosa Emani who is administrative support for both Gateway and careers. Tufos already has shown how valuable she is to the team and also our young men at school. Having such a fine son as Jozanam, it has been great to see Tufosa’s journey with the school.
The careers team continues to work with scholarship students and it is vital that the students get the opportunities that are presented to them. With the success of the drivers licence, already students are wanting to get their learners done.
There are a number of students who are doing the financial literacy programme, and this will continue until term ending.
The Gateway programme is finishing up for the year but there are still a number of students who need to re submit their assessments for them to achieve. These are students who are completing their Part Time and Work Experience programmes.
Our sincere thanks especially to Heamoni from Service IQ who has continued to work hard with our students to a good level.
There is still lots to do and we thank our students and parents for their support
