Dr. Jack Parker
As we approach the close of the first semester, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a remarkable start to the school year. Together, we’ve celebrated milestones, overcome challenges, and witnessed countless moments of growth and achievement within our schools. This success is a testament to the dedication, resilience, and care that define our school community—students, staff, parents, and supporters alike.
As the holiday season draws near, I wish each of you a time filled with family, joy, and the opportunity to recharge. The holidays are a chance to step back from our busy schedules, embrace loved ones, and reflect on the blessings of the year. May this season bring peace, happiness, and hope for the new year ahead.
Looking forward, I am thrilled to share exciting news about a transformational opportunity for our students and community. Hancock County recently broke ground on Amplify Hancock, the future home of our Hancock County Career Center (HC3), opening in the 2026 school year. This collaborative effort among our four school corporations exemplifies the power of partnership in creating something truly extraordinary. Together, we are expanding Career and Technical Education opportunities that will prepare our students for success in high-demand careers while also strengthening our local economy.
The groundbreaking of Amplify Hancock represents the first step toward a shared vision of providing innovative, hands-on learning experiences that equip our students to thrive. I am proud to be part of this collaborative effort and look forward to the incredible opportunities this will bring to our students and our community.
Thank you all for your unwavering commitment to our schools and your belief in the power of education. Let’s finish this semester strong and look ahead with enthusiasm to all that awaits in 2024. Happy holidays, and here’s to a bright and successful new year!
Veterans Day at MVCSC
On Veterans Day, Mt. Vernon students across the district had the opportunity to honor their family members, friends, and community heroes who have served in the military. This special day was dedicated to remembering their sacrifices, acknowledging their personal stories, and celebrating the deep connections that make their service so meaningful.
The middle school also invited veterans in attendance to share their names, years of service, and the students they accompanied. Many school ceremonies included a moment of silence to honor the fallen, the playing of "Taps" and the Pledge of Allegiance, as well as various music celebrating America. Special poems were also read in remembrance of those who have served our country.
Mt. Vernon High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter hosted their first Veterans Day event as part of their chapter meeting. The "Missing Man Table" was prominently displayed during many ceremonies to honor fallen, missing, or imprisoned military service members. This poignant symbol serves as a tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice or remain unaccounted for, ensuring their sacrifice is never forgotten.
To close the ceremonies, many schools had their students escort their family veterans through the halls. They were greeted by cheers of “U.S.A.” and applause from students and teachers. The applause was not just a show of appreciation but also an acknowledgment of the immense courage and dedication of these veterans. This public display of gratitude undoubtedly left a lasting impression on both the veterans and the students.
Thank You, Veterans!
Lilly Endowment Scholarship Finalists
Congratulations to Mt. Vernon High School seniors Natalie Hudson and Maya Morales who were selected as finalists for the Community Foundation of Hancock County’s Lilly Endowment scholarship. Each year, two seniors are selected from each of the four Hancock County high schools for this prestigious scholarship. Out of these eight seniors, two lucky students will be chosen to receive the scholarship. The Lilly Scholarship is one of the most esteemed awards available to Indiana high school seniors, offering a full-tuition scholarship to an accredited Indiana college or university. Each year, thousands of students from across the state compete for this opportunity, but only a select few become finalists.
To become qualifiers for this highly esteemed scholarship, Natalie and Maya proved their academic excellence by being in the top 15% of their graduating class while also displaying their extensive involvement in the community.
No matter the outcome, Natalie and Maya have already proven their dedication and excellence. Mt. Vernon wishes these two young ladies the best of luck in their final interviews and in achieving their dreams.
MVHS Students Teach FES Students American Sign Language
Mt. Vernon high schoolers took a meaningful trip to Fortville Elementary School, where they shared their American Sign Language (ASL) knowledge with eager second and fourth graders. This visit was particularly special because the older students focused on teaching Thanksgiving-themed signs, helping the younger students connect with the holiday in a unique and engaging way. The collaboration not only introduced the elementary students to a new form of communication but also fostered a sense of community and learning just in time for the festive season.
MVMS Career Fair
Mt. Vernon Middle School hosted an exciting and educational Career Fair for students in fifth, sixth, and seventh grades. The event provided a unique opportunity for students to explore a wide range of potential career paths and gain valuable insight into the professional world.
In the morning, all fifth-grade students from the three elementary schools were transported to the Mt. Vernon Middle School Fieldhouse for the event, while sixth and seventh-grade students had their turn in the afternoon. Students had the chance to engage with various professionals from different fields, each offering firsthand knowledge about their careers. From technology and business to human services and the military, the fair showcased a diverse array of professions, giving students a glimpse into what their future could hold.
