Math Meets Imagination in Second Grade!

From Game Designers to Math Teachers: Second Graders Share Their Learning!

Our second graders wrapped up their math unit in such a special way! After designing and perfecting math games to practice addition and subtraction facts within 20, they invited kindergarten students to come play.

What happened next was even more amazing than we could have imagined -- every student, whether they usually find math easy or challenging, became a teacher. They showed their younger classmates strategies like counting on fingers, using number lines, and referencing the posters around the room. The classroom was filled with giggles, smiles, and so much joy as everyone learned and played together!

Earlier in the week, students had worked in small groups to design their own games -- using just a few materials and lots of creativity. The results were impressive: Bean Bag Toss, Puzzle Match, Spin and Solve, and Balloon Math. After teaching one another how to play, second graders shared their creations with kindergarten, turning math review into a true celebration of learning, teamwork, and fun.
