World IP Day 2024 IP and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity

World IP Day is celebrated on April 26 to recognize of the role of intellectual property (IP) in spurring creativity and innovation. This year’s theme, “IP and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity", highlights the role of IP in helping to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by re-thinking how we live, work and play. These goals were adopted by the United Nations to help protect the planet, and build a better, more sustainable future. In keeping with this theme, USF Tech Transfer went to the lab of Dr. Arash Takshi to learn more about his renewable energy technologies that address these current challenges.

Innovation and IP play a big part in the journey towards achieving the SDGs and finding solutions that are crucial to building our common future. Across many sectors, IP makes the journey from invention to impactful solution possible. The protection of intellectual property rights is a critical step that can have a profound impact on economic growth, innovation, and societal change.

World IP Day was first launched in 2000 to help promote and protect creative ideas, including music, art, photos, symbols, writings, and inventions. The annual event offers USF a unique opportunity to join with others around the globe to explore how IP helps shape the world as well as showcase the discoveries happening every day at the University of South Florida that contribute to economic development and social well-being.
