Let’s build Byron Bay High School a COLA!
Can you help us build this essential structure for our students?
As the financial year ends, we’re asking our school community to help us fund a Covered Outdoor Learning Area (COLA) over the basketball courts.
Why a COLA?
- Year-round UV protection for our students
- All-weather outdoor exercise space
- Flexible area for learning and school events
- Keeps students active all year round, no matter the weather
The BBHS P&C has long pushed for this upgrade, but in 2024, the NSW Department of Education rejected the project, citing existing covered areas as being sufficient.
After Tropical Cyclone Alfred hit our area, Education Minister Prue Car made a visit to BBHS and witnessed firsthand the dire need for facility upgrades. Yet the current Department update on the COLA project is that it is "under consideration" for 2025–2026 funding.
We can't afford to wait years for this! Our students need it now. To show our commitment, we want to raise the funds and get the ball rolling.
Be part of the legacy that will provide invaluable space for our teenage community.
Let’s act now! Every donation - big or small – will bring us closer to a space where our students can learn, play, and thrive in all weather conditions.
You can make a tax free donation to the Byron Bay High School Building Fund here:
If you have any questions, please contact the P&C Association at bbhspandc@gmail.com

Winter has arrived... and it's cold!
Students are encourage to wear a NAVY jumper to school on cold days
Winter has arrived with a BANG! and it is chilly outside at Byron Bay High School - especially in the mornings. Wearing a jumper to school is a good idea to help students stay warm and comfortable during the school day, particularly if they are outdoors for any period of time or waiting for a bus. Layering with a NAVY jumper or jacket is a smart choice for staying warm.
Parents and carers, please encourage your child to leave the house each morning wearing a jumper - either a school branded navy jumper (available at School Locker) or a plain navy jumper/hoodie.
Jumpers or jackets worn to school should be plain NAVY, without stripes or large logos (any external logos must be no larger than a credit card).
We have had a lot of students coming into the office requesting a jumper because they are cold. Unfortunately, we only have a limited supply of spare jumpers to hand out. If your child borrows a jumper, it would be appreciated if you can please wash it and return it to the office as soon as possible.
BBHS Winter Uniforms summary:
- Long pants - students can wear plain navy or black long pants (chinos or trackpants)
- Jumpers - should be plain navy, without stripes or large logos (any external logos must be no larger than a credit card). Regional or state CHS representative sport jumpers may be worn
- Undershirts - can be white, black, or navy blue
- Shoes - must be totally enclosed footwear (no crocs, ugg boots, sandals or slides)
- NOT a part of our school uniform are denim jeans, tights and bike pants
BBHS branded school jumpers
An update from School Locker
We have spoken with our uniform supplier, School Locker, and they have advised that they have had some manufacturing issues with the BBHS school jumper. They currently have some stock of this jumper available for purchase, however, the stock is limited while they work with their manufacturer.
They do, however, have plenty of the BBHS Varsity jackets in stock. These jackets can be worn by all students in Years 7 to 12 and are a warm option as the weather turns colder.
Byron Bay High bands rock the North Coast!
Showcasing our talents at The Art Unit's Surround Sound Band Day
On Friday 6 June, Byron Bay High School students Zephyr P-B and Kai A of Wild Rocket, along with Marley P, Ziggy N, Ahlia B and Eva W-S of The Grannie Smyths, took part in the NSW Department of Education: The Arts Unit’s Surround Sound Band Program in Grafton.
Held at the Clarence Valley Conservatorium of Music, the event brought together talented students from across the North Coast for a day of masterclasses, workshops, and auditions for a performance opportunity outside Kudos Arena in Sydney later this year.
Both Wild Rocket and The Granny Smyths delivered energetic performances and received expert feedback from Conservatorium tutors to help polish their stagecraft.
Well done to all involved—what a gig! Keep rocking!

Far North Coast Dance Festival 2025
Our BBHS Dance team steps into the spotlight!
Last Thursday, 18 of our talented dancers proudly represented Byron Bay High School at the Far North Coast Dance Festival, held at Twin Towns Services Club in Tweed Heads, in front of a large and supportive audience.
Our piece, titled Meeting Place, was inspired by our own school's connection to Country – the land we gather on and the ocean that surrounds us. The choreography drew from Aboriginal symbols and storytelling, using circular movements, transitions, and formations to represent the concept of a meeting place.
The ensemble worked collaboratively during Friday lunchtimes to develop and rehearse the piece, demonstrating great dedication, creativity, and respect for the cultural themes we explored.
We are incredibly proud of our students for their commitment and performance. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with other schools, celebrate dance as an art form, and share our story with the broader community.
Ms Jessie Kernaghan - Maths teacher and Dance coach
Our boys are the North Coast Champions!
Open Boys Soccer
Earlier this week, our BBHS Open Boys Soccer team travelled to Coffs Harbour to take on Orara High School in the North Coast Final.
Our boys started strongly and controlled the game early with a skillful display of passing and possession.
As expected, Orara found their rhythm, as the momentum began to shift midway through the first half. Their assault was put to a halt, with a perfect finish from Atticus M against the run of play. The remainder of the first half finished in an arm wrestle of ascendancy, however both teams failed to register another score. In hot conditions, all players were grateful for the break at half-time, with Byron Bay holding a slim 1-nil lead.
Our boys took to the field to start the 2nd half, fully prepared for a competitive response from the home team. Orara found the back of the net in quick succession, scoring twice, leaving Byron Bay deflated and under pressure for the first time in their campaign.
However our spirits were soon raised by a miraculous Captain’s goal from Remy B, leaving the scores locked at 2 all. With a new found energy, Byron Bay’s offensive game came into play, as they searched for that elusive winning goal.
With time against them, and players tiring due to the conditions, it looked likely the game would go into golden goal extra time.
As the clock ticked down to the final 15 seconds of the match, Atticus M converted a brilliant goal from an impressive solo effort, and his 2nd of the match. The team was crowned North Coast Champions moments later!
We are now into the final 16 teams in the State, with our next match likely to feature against a Sydney based school. The boys will take added confidence from this latest victory, and a growing sense of belief into their next round. We wish them all the best as they continue their march towards CHS glory. Well done boys!!!

Year 12 History students take on Sydney
History Teachers' Association of NSW (HTANSW) Study Days
Last week, 30 Ancient and Modern History students travelled to Sydney to participate in the annual History Teachers' Association of NSW (HTANSW) Study Days. Across 2 enriching days, our students attended a range of lectures delivered by experienced presenters and HSC markers, gaining invaluable insights into the exam process and syllabus content.
The topics covered encompassed all HSC units studied in both the Modern and Ancient History courses, along with key skills in source analysis and effective essay writing techniques.
Students embraced the opportunity to engage with campus life - asking thoughtful questions, sharing ideas, and connecting with peers from other schools.
The Ancient History class also visited the Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney, while the Modern History class had the privilege of attending a powerful and moving presentation by Holocaust survivor Peter Halas at the Central Synagogue in Bondi Junction.
To top off our inspiring and academically enriching days, our enthusiastic historians also celebrated Spencer W’s 18th birthday — set against the sparkling backdrop of Vivid Sydney, making the trip even more memorable. Students enjoyed dinner in Chinatown on the first night and explored the vibrant dining scene around The Rocks on the second night.
A heartfelt thank you to Mr Brian Oxley, Ms Leia Mancini and Mrs Eliza Oldfield for generously giving their time over the 3 days to help create an unforgettable experience for our students. A big thank you also to Ancient History teacher Mrs Michelle Lowe and Modern History teacher Mrs Kellie Clothier for their efforts in organising the excursion.
Most importantly, a huge thank you to the incredible group of young adults who accompanied us — their exemplary behaviour and maturity were a credit to themselves and our school. It was a privilege to share this journey with them, and they made us all immensely proud.

Camden represents in Rugby Union
Congratulations to Year 10 student Camden W, who was selected for the Far North Coast Rugby Union team at the NSW Junior Rugby State Championships over the June long weekend.
Competing against the top junior players from across New South Wales, Camden and his FNC teammates delivered a strong performance with victories over Central West, Central North, and South Coast. The team’s impressive run ended in the semi-final, falling just short of a place in the final.
Year 10 School Vaccination Program
Next week at school - Tuesday 17 June
Keeping your child up to date with routine vaccinations helps to protect them from serious preventable diseases. Year 10 parents and carers, please refer to the email sent to you on Tuesday 27 May for full details about this program.
Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the School Vaccination Program.
In 2025, students in Year 10 are offered a free vaccine at school for:
- Meningococcal ACWY (single dose)
- This vaccine is important as it protects against 4 types of meningococcal bacteria, which cause serious disease that can quickly become life-threatening.
- Find out more about Meningococcal here:
To register your child to receive this vaccination at school you will be required to grant your consent online through the NSW Health link provided below. Paper consent packs are also available from the school office if you do not have access to a computer.
Vaccinations will only be provided at school if you provide your consent. No student will be vaccinated without consent.
How to provide your online consent:
- Visit the School Vaccination Program online consent portal
- Click the login button in the School Vaccination Program section and log in using your Service NSW details (this is the same account you may already use to renew your driver’s licence, etc)
- Update or confirm your personal details in Service NSW as required
- Complete the School Vaccination Consent Form for your child
We also recommend that you have a conversation with your child to advise them if you have registered them to receive a vaccination on Tuesday 17 June. If your child misses this School Vaccination Clinic, you can speak to your local GP or pharmacist about catching up on vaccinations.
