Coming up in this edition of the newsletter...

  • Careers Week write-up (photos will follow in next week's newsletter)
  • Red Nose Day reminder - next Friday
  • Football match vs St. Georges

Another good week of sunshine and an excellent week here at Friars. Mixed in with the fun this week was a home boys’ football match on Monday (see the PE and Sports section for more) and a Year 4 educational visit to the Imperial War Museum in London. I accompanied the children on the trip and it was fantastic. The children were excellent – both with their behaviour and their interest in their World War II learning. It was a long journey on the coach but we enjoyed it. There are lots of educational visits happening across the second half of the year… Reception children are off to Hyde Hall, Year 1 to Wat Tyler Country Park, Year 2 to Call of the Wild, Year 3 to Colchester Castle, Year 5 to the Tower of London and possibly the Thriftwood Camp too, and Year 6 have either the Ilam Hall residential in the Peak District or Southend Week. We can’t wait!

A reminder that next week we have our Learning Conversation Evenings – please book an appointment if you have not already done so. Bookings do close on Tuesday. Also, we have Red Nose Day on Friday next week. Please see the reminder below for more information.

Have a super weekend and see you on Monday.

Have a fantastic week!

Mr. McClay, Principal

Red Nose Day

A reminder that Red Nose Day is on Friday 21st March. Children are welcome to wear red noses and/or other Red Nose Day merchandise with their school uniform (this can include something like a Red Nose Day t-shirt). Please note - it is not a non-uniform day. Red noses can only be bought online now - at places like Amazon or the Comic Relief Shop but we do still have a small number of red noses to sell in school. Noses cost £2.50. Where possible, please provide the correct change. Thank you.

On the day we will accept any donations for the charity. Donations should be handed in to class adults.

Careers Week

Last week we were very lucky to welcome so many visitors into our school who gave us an insight into their careers. The children were very excited to find out about different jobs they could take on when they are older.

Lots of children across the school heard from a paramedic. They saw how to carry out CPR, looked around an ambulance and watched whilst their teacher had they pulse checked!

The police also visited and spoke to Year 6 about the police force and what a interesting career it can be. They heard about the routes into the police force and all the different roles available.

We were also treated the another emergency service when the fire brigade visited. There were lots of excitement as the children used the hoses and sat in the cab. They also enjoyed pretending to be a fire fighter by trying on the helmets!

Dan from BMW came in for the second year in a row and brought with him an impressive electric car. The children looked inside the bonnet, pretended to drive and some were very impressed by the size of the boot! Dan spoke to the children about different routes into working for BMW and the children learnt about all the different roles available.

Some children were also treated to a visit by Connor from Ford. He also talk to the children about his role behind the scenes which gave an insight into how huge the car industry is.

Ollie gave Year 2 a virtual tour of the New Holland Tractor Headquarters. He told the children how his role has allowed him to travel to lots of different countries which is an enjoyable perk of the job.

Year 5 found out about commercial finance from Neil who works in London. They were impressed by the celebrities that Neil has worked with and they’re now keen to work on their maths skills even more so that different opportunities are open to them when they are older.

Aircraft Dispatcher Rob came to talk about how integral his job is to the safe take off of planes. He has to work very hard to make sure that planes are balanced and that everyone works together to make flights safe for the passengers.

Mica talked passionately about her career as a musician. There’s now lots of budding musicians in Year 3 ready to take to the stage.

Alex also came in for the second year running and continued explaining to the older year groups what it’s like to be a manager for National Grid. He gave a thorough description of all the different routes into working for National Grid and the children found out about different benefits you can gain from working in large companies.

Thank you to every visitor that came in – it was a huge success.

"I love seeing my friends at Friars" Year 1 child

Nursery

After a very busy week last week, Nursery has been a little calmer. The children started the week building a pirate ship out of the large wooden blocks in the garden. From this, we had some fantastic imaginary play. Children made treasure maps, others made eye patches and pirate's hats, which were all used when pretending to walk the plank or explore an island.

We have also had out the coloured sand with small bottles, scoops and funnels. The children enjoyed making potions and perfumes with these all whilst supporting their fine motor skills. During group time this week, we were thinking about the purpose of different objects and asking the children ‘what are these used for? This was a lovely discussion-based activity which allowed some children who may normally sit quietly to get involved in the topic of conversation.

REMINDER: Please make sure that you have read the letter regarding Easter bonnets.

Reception

We have used our new story – Katie in London to introduce many famous landmarks around London this week. The children seem especially inspired by Tower Bridge, Elizabeth Tower and The London Eye. They have drawn pictures of these landmarks, used small construction equipment as well as large scale construction in our garden to good effect. We have spoken about the history relating to The Tower of London as well.

In maths, we have focused on finding one more and one less than a given number and subitising (estimating) how many dots are in various patterns. Our phonics sessions have continued to focus on reading longer words. We encourage the children to ‘chunk’ the words (break them into two parts) to help with reading, our tricky words have been she, push, me and of.

Year 1

We have had another busy week in Year 1. In English, we have looked at alliteration and had a go at creating silly sentences like “Rocky the rhino ran round the racetrack”. At the end of the week we used the book “Oi Frog!” to create our own rhymes.

Measuring has been the focus of maths this week. We began by comparing things and people using the words taller, shorter or longer and shorter. Then we moved on to estimating and measuring items using cubes.

We have started our DT projects and have had a go at making moving pictures using sliders and split pins. It was a lot of fun.

REMINDER: Please remember to return the reading books on Thursdays so that they can be changed. Thanks.

Year 2

In English this week, we have been investigating the Titanic. We researched the disaster to create fact files and then we used our facts to write an informative text. We enjoyed learning facts and sharing our findings with other children in our class.

This week in maths, we have been measuring things in our classrooms. The children estimated what objects they thought were longer than a metre and which ones were shorter. We used metre rulers and worked with a partner to investigate whether our estimations were accurate. Some of the children in 2W had an incorrect estimation as they found out that Miss Williams was taller than the metre ruler and not shorter!

2S began their outdoor learning this week. The children studied different examples of maps and then created their own maps of the Environmental Garden. Using their maps and compasses, children navigated their way around the garden to find different features.

2W have also had an exciting week as on Wednesday the children had a class picnic. This was a reward for the children’s good attendance. We enjoyed our snacks and the chance to have extra time to spend with our friends! Hopefully, 2W can keep up the good attendance and spin the wheel again soon.

REMINDER: 2W outdoor learning will begin on Tuesday 18th March.

We look forward to seeing you next week at our learning conversation evenings on the 19th and 20th of March.

Year 3

Well the weather has started to look a little better as we move into spring!

We have started out NFER maths assessments this week. We have tried our best and really showed the teachers how well we have done in our maths learning, producing great results.

In English, we have carried on with our layered reading text – Tom's Sausage Lion and are really intrigued to know if Tom really did see a lion steal some sausages! We also revisited some previous grammar learning and this week it was possessive apostrophes.

In maths, we have been revisiting all previous learning centred around this such as fractions, timetables and division, measurement and addition and subtraction.

During our busy afternoons, we have completed an investigation on light sources and tested various items to see if they were reflective or non-reflective and then recorded out results in a table. We have learnt French for numbers 11-20 and the names of some pets. In geography, we looked at the effects of earthquakes on both land and people.

3B also celebrated getting their third spin of the wheel last week, where Miss Spooner managed to win us a half hour cartoon or film, we were also lucky enough to enjoy some popcorn with it too!

Year 4

On Thursday, Year 4 had the most amazing trip to the Imperial War Museum in London! We had to arrive at school much earlier than usual (so some of us felt quite tired on the coach) to make sure we arrived at the museum in good time. On the coach we saw all sorts of famous landmarks in London, including the Millennium Dome, The Gherkin, The Shard, The Tower of London and we even drove over Tower Bridge! After about two hours we knew we had arrived at the Imperial War Museum because we noticed GINORMOUS cannons just outside of the main entrance! After a quick group photo in front of the cannons we went inside the museum.

Upon entering the main foyer, we were blown away by the full sized V2 German rocket, Spitfire and Ohka planes as well as the numerous exhibits of tanks, motorcycles and ambulances! We were tasked to complete a scavenger hunt, finding out various facts around displays and models and to take group photos in front of each.

We really enjoyed looking at miniature models of houses from the 1940’s and discussing the differences between houses in the past and present. Further on we were able to sit inside an Anderson shelter and feel how cramped it would be spending night after night in the shelter during air raids. The under-table Morrison shelter was a real squeeze but all the children wanted to go in and experience how it felt. When entering the main World War II gallery, the sound of planes and the air raid siren helped to recreate the sounds of a typical day in 1940. Images of planes flying overhead gave a real sense of how it must have felt to be alive during this period of time, something that made us all feel very reflective.

The children’s behaviour was excellent throughout the trip and we received some lovely compliments from staff at the museum. Group leaders were very proud to be walking around the museum with such well-behaved and polite pupils. They were a credit to the school!

Year 5

This week in English, Year 5 have been working hard on their NFER English assessments. We started the week with the reading paper and then the children completed spelling and grammar and punctuation papers. A big well done to everyone for their superb efforts. Next week, we will complete the maths NFER assessments after ending this week with a little revision of key skills

In geography, the children explored the four layers of the rainforest. They enjoyed discussing the most fascinating fact they had found for each layer. Did you know, that when it rains, it takes 10 minutes for the droplets to travel from the top layer (emergent) to the bottom layer (forest floor).

The year group was very mature and sensible during RE when they considered charitable acts that we can do in everyday life. They particularly enjoyed finding out about the charitable acts of some famous footballers.

We have also finalised the parts for the upcoming Year 5 assembly. The children are excited to receive their lines and start rehearsals next week.

REMINDER: Year 5 Assembly to parents – Friday 4th April

Year 6

This week, in our writing, we have been developing our narrative skills. We have been working on a piece called ‘The worry Tree’. In maths, we have been multiplying and dividing decimals.

In geography, we learnt about topographical maps and looked at the heights above sea-level for parts of the UK and where the Mayan settlements were. We created our own topological designs.

In PE we have continued with handball; refining skills of the game and introducing new rules.

In science, we looked at what makes up the blood in our body and the purpose of the different parts. We even made our own representations.

Year 6 SATs / Ilam Hall Residential Meeting - Tuesday 22nd April at 3:30pm

You might have already seen in our diary dates that after Easter there is a meeting to discuss the Year 6 SATs and the Year 6 residential. Originally this was going to be on Thursday 24th April but this has now moved to Tuesday 22nd April at 3:30pm.

The first part of the meeting will be all about the SATs Week and everything it entails, and then we will switch our attentions to Ilam Hall. Of course, if your child is not attending the residential you will be free to leave at that point. We look forward to seeing you then.

"I can't believe we created our own games - I want to do this for my job" Year 6 child

Computing

Another full and busy week in the computing suite this week.

At the beginning of the week year two used Chrome Music lab to explore the pulse and the rhythm, throughout the lesson children worked hard to develop a piece of music using a steady beat.

In year one individuals logged in to the computers and were then instructed to open a document from the previous week. This lesson we focused on exploring the tool bar and editing text to improve the colour, size and the font.

Year 5 worked with their partner/small group to continue planning their video, this lesson they learned about different filming techniques and discussed how they could use different techniques for different parts of their videos. They are very excited to begin filming next week.

Year 3 children continued developing their powerpoint skills by creating a poster about red nose day which is taking place next Friday. Individuals were asked to create an eye catching poster for us to use around the school to promote red noses for sale.

Year 4 continued their learning on editing photos. This week they learnt how to clone images on photos. They also learnt how to remove an image and then blend the background to make it look natural.

Year 6 looked at Copyright when using images and considered some scenarios very carefully regarding whether they are allowed to use an image or whether it is copyrighted. They also discussed crediting original creators or paying for images.

Online Safety

Whilst they can be a great way for friends to socialise, online games like Roblox that allow multiplayer gameplay with strangers are always fraught with a variety of dangers that can expose children to inappropriate or harmful content. Roblox enables people to play anonymously, which can often be something that attracts people to misuse the game and potentially put young people at risk of harm.

In addition to interacting with random strangers across the world, other factors such as in-game purchases and potential scams can also pose a financial risk. It’s important that parents and educators remain aware of the risks associated with this popular title and how it can be used safely. This free guide – also available in podcast format – offers parents and educators expert advice on what can be done to ensure that young people have a safe and enjoyable experience with Roblox.

"It was great to win my event at the Borough Sports - I felt so proud" - Year 5 pupil

PE & Sports

This week our Year 6 boys played a home game against St. Georges school. The sun was shining on what was a gorgeous spring afternoon. The boys played exceptionally well and had a great first half. At half-time it was 2-0 to us! Unfortunately, there was a strong comeback from St. Georges and we went down to a 3-2 defeat. Bradley had a late effort hit the post as we chased an equaliser. Well done to everyone who played. Mrs. Delgado the headteacher of St. Georges had brought the team across for the fixture. She commented on what a credit our boys were in their play and attitude on the pitch.

Attendance

What an exciting week for attendance… we had spins of the attendance wheel in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. As our two Celebration Assemblies happen at the same time, the wheel had to be rushed from Mrs. Halls in KS2 down to Mr. McClay in KS1! Thank you to Mr. Leggett for doing this – we knew as our school’s PE Lead that he would be quick!

Our spinning classes were Wrens in Year 1 and 6L! Wrens won a 30-minute class party and 6L won a 30-minute film. Congratulations to both.

Well done too to 2S who received a sticker for the Spin the Wheel chart. If they achieve a sticker next week then they will be spinning…

A great week this week for Caernarfon! Double winners in both Key Stage 1 and 2. Could this be the start of their surge towards the top?

In terms of the overall lead, Stirling continue to sit in first place but Windsor did close the gap by 4 points this week. Well done everyone.
