SLT Update

On Monday it was wonderful to celebrate over 100 students in our spring term rewards assembly for attendance, academic performance, attitude to learning and house success.

On Friday, our Year 10 students ventured into the world of work for their first day of work experience. We look forward to hearing about their experiences after the Easter break.

Wishing all our families a wonderful Easter break and we look forward to welcoming our students back on Tuesday 22nd April.

Miss King, Head of School

Detentions

After Easter, we will be trialling a new system for students to get to detention at lunch time.

Students will be informed in assembly on the first day back.

Students will be expected to go at break as normal. Any non-attendance, a report will be sent to all staff at 12:20pm and p4 teachers will check this and escort to detentions in F1.

If a student refuses to be escorted, it will be a remove and that student will be sent to IE.

Feedback

We are gathering feedback on how we report to you on your child's academic progress and attitude to learning in school and would really appreciate your thoughts. We ask you to take a moment to fill in this short form. Many thanks in advance.

CRA Character

This week our Year 10 students finished the term by undertaking a 1-day work experience placement. Many students will be demonstrating lots of courage and confidence while in the workplace, and for many the experience will help raise their aspirations for their time after CRA.

Maths Department

Each week, our students at CRA, complete maths questions for their homework on Sparx. Some students answer additional questions, further increasing their mathematical knowledge. We do this as there are online resources to help and guide students if they are struggling with a question. You might like to ask them to show you what they typically do on a weekly basis.

This weeks Sparx Stars are

  • Tiana B - Year 10
  • Violet C - Year 8
  • Grace L - Year 7

Why We Do What We Do

At CRA we use cold call which is a teaching strategy. It means that rather than asking students to put their hands up to answer questions we give some thinking time, we pose the question, we then ask a particular student. That take up time means that all students think about the answer. If we use a name straight away students will often opt out and think phew Miss or Sir isn't going to ask me so I don't have to think about it. We do ask students to put their hand up if they don't understand but generally we cold call our students.

Table Talk

Have you ever been chatting with your child and you want to have a deeper conversation, but you don’t quite know what to ask? Or have family conversations gotten routine? Too surface-level? Or too much about logistics, like who is going where and when?

Ask the question and then JUST LISTEN. And when you think they are done talking, wait some more. Be curious and show interest with a follow-up like “Hmmm, oh, that’s interesting. Tell me more.” Your goal right now is to connect.

If you have advice or comments that you want to give, make a note of it and talk about that another time. Enjoy the time with your teen or tween and see the world through their eyes.

Here are some question starters you might like to use to help to get your teenager a little better.

  • ✓ What are the things you like about yourself?
  • ✓ What are things you’re working on improving? How are you doing that?
  • ✓ What do you like to do for fun? ✓ When do you feel happiest?
  • ✓ When do you feel sad?
  • ✓ What do you worry about?
  • ✓ What do you do to cope with your feelings?
  • ✓ What are you most looking forward to?
  • ✓ What are you most proud of this past year?

Times Tables

At the end of all lessons students stand behind their chairs in silence to prepare for themselves for the next lesson. From September, on a weekly rota, Years 7 and 8 will be reciting their timetables to help embed them in their long term memory.

Week beginning - 22 April 25 - Times table is 8

Attendance.

Please may we remind you that absences for increment weather will not be authorised, unless the school is closed.

If your child is absent from school, please ensure you contact school daily either by email/MCAS or by telephoning the attendance line 01476 550333 ext 502. It is vital we are notified everyday of any absence for safeguarding reasons, unless previously authorised. A reason for illness will always be requested, this is to observe attendance patterns and outbreaks of illness amongst students.

Please do not hesitate to contact myself kcoleman@charlesreadacademy.co.uk on 01476 550333 ext 515 or tsandison@charlesreadacademy.co.uk ext 502 to discuss ways to support your child's attendance.

CRA - Lets work together to make every day count!

Leave of absence request

A Principal can only authorise a leave of absence in exceptional circumstances. We will take into account the Government guidance when considering what the exceptional circumstances are- all applications are considered on a case-by-case basis. You may be able to take your child out of school in exceptional circumstances, providing an application is made in advance by the parent/carer, this request complies with Government guidance and the leave is deemed to be ‘exceptional’ by the Principal.

If you take a leave of absence without our permission or if your child fails to return by the agreed date if permission was granted, then this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and noted in your child’s record. You might also be issued with a fixed penalty notice for this absence. If your child has not returned within 10 days of the expected date of return then, after consultation with the Local Authority, we may take your child off our school roll.

As examples, the following reasons are not considered to be exceptional circumstances:

  • availability of cheap holidays
  • periods overlapping with beginning or end of term
  • visits to family
  • renewing passports

Requests for leave of absence will only be considered if made in writing. Please ensure you use the leave of absence request form to do this.

To request a leave of absence, please use this form.

House News.

It’s a Bullseye….

This week at CRA house teams took part in a general knowledge quiz, ‘Bullseye’ themed. Similar to the hit TV quiz show Bullseye, students and staff faced a series of general knowledge quiz rounds before earning house points on a giant inflatable Dart board. Each correct answer earned a dart with each number on the board worth the same amount of house points. There were four rounds in total, including a team round, spin the wheel question board and head to head buzz in rounds. Every house point earned throughout was safely banked and added to respective house totals after the competition.

Congratulations to Caeli house who accumulated the highest points total, accessing the bonus round at the end of the competition to try and pick up some last minute bonus points. A score of 189 house points picked up by Caeli earned them the biggest points haul from the competition. Aqua finished in 2nd place with 164 points and Terra came 3rd with 88 points.

Well done to everyone who took part.

House Photography Competition – ‘House Elements’

REMINDER that the house photography competition (House Elements) continues over the Easter holidays.

This year the challenge is to be creative and capture ‘house elements’ by including either water (Aqua), weather (Caeli) or landscape (Terra) within your photos.

The competition is open to all students, staff and parents with each person able to enter a maximum of 5 photos.

Entries must be emailed to housechampionship@charlesreadacademy.co.uk with a deadline of Tuesday 22nd April.

We look forward to receiving more entries.

Term 5 House Competitions

The house totaliser is getting really close, with just a handful of points separating first and second place. The latest scores will be revealed in assembly in the first week back after Easter, however we are excited to share some of the house competitions scheduled to take place next term. Competitions include Rounders, Rocket League, NOW Music Quiz and Gladiators. More information about how to get involved in the competitions to follow after half term. Have a great Easter!
