This year the MVP race is closer than it’s ever been. Drake Maye vs Matthew Stafford. Nobody would have predicted this coming into the season, but now it’s one of the closest award races I’ve seen. In this article I’m getting into who should win MVP? Matt Stafford or Drake Maye.
The Case for Drake Maye
Drake Maye has the most passing yards, the 4th most touchdowns, and the highest rating, and 1st in completion percentage, and the crazy thing is that he’s doing this even though he’s taken the 3rd most sacks in the league. Maye has done this even though he only has Steffon Diggs, and Kayson Boutte. Yes it’s not bad but it’s nothing compared to having Nacua and Adam’s. But unlike Stafford Maye is turning the ball over a lot more. Maye has thrown the 7th most interceptions in the league. Other than that his stats are insane and he has done all that even with the 11th most attempts, which isn’t that much for his stats. When I look for the MVP I think of what it means. Most VALUABLE. How I look for the guy that deserves it I think of what would the team would be without him. The Patriots without Drake Maye would be another 4-13 team like the last couple of years. The Patriots would be absolutely terrible without Drake Maye, so that is why he should win MVP. So what’s against him? This: Drake Maye has faced the 8th easiest, 9th easiest, 12th easiest, 5th easiest, 6th easiest, 11th easiest, and 2nd easiest QB defenses. He has had an absolutely amazing schedule that his heavily favored him, and it could be the reason the Patriots are so good. But then again when you look at it, the Patriots have passed the ball the 7th least in the NFL mostly because they are always leading. If the Patriots had closer games, Maye would dominate the league. Maye has put up a great pace for MVP, so let’s see how Stafford could get it.
The Case for Matthew Stafford:
Stafford and Maye have very similar stats. Stafford have the 4th most passing yards (less than Maye), but he has the most touchdowns (more than Maye). Stafford has the 2nd highest rating which is right under Maye, but Stafford isn’t consistent being 12th in Completion Percentage. Stafford also gets big help from his O-Line, being sacked the 8th least of all starting QBs. Yes these are good stats, but he has had two top 10 receivers in Adam’s, and Nacua. Adam’s leads the league in TDs, while Puka is 3rd in yards, so maybe the only reason Stafford is good is because of them. Or maybe Nacua and Adam’s are good because of Stafford making Stafford an elite QB. Unlike Maye, Stafford has thrown the 6th least interceptions, giving the Rams mod scoring opportunities. Stafford has less passing yards than Maye, even though Stafford has the 6th most attempts in the league, and 20 more attempts than Maye. Once again thinking about how valuable Stafford is, it’s up in the air. The Rams already have an insanely good offense, and defense, and without Stafford I still think they could be a 10-7 playoff team, making Stafford not as valuable. Unlike Maye Stafford has faced really tough teams. He has faced the hardest, 12th hardest, 8th hardest, 7th hardest, QB defense. Stafford is still putting up awesome stats even against these tough defenses. The crazy thing is though for the Rams is that they pass the 14th most in the NFL, and Maye still puts up better numbers than Stafford. When you really look into it, Maye is the obvious MVP, and their should be no debate.
