Parkside Primary News Week ending: Friday 6th September 2024

Welcome Back

We hope you all had a fantastic summer break. It has been wonderful to see all the children back this week. We would also like to give a warm welcome to all new pupils and their families. We have an exciting year ahead, with lots of enjoyable learning experiences, trips and event planned. Let's make it a brilliant year!

Intra-Sports

We hold an intra-sports competition in school on the first Friday back of each half term so that children have chance to put into practice what they have learnt in P.E in a competition based scenario. This gives children a chance to compete against the whole year group, not just their class. Today's event was lots of fun and a great way to end the first week of the new school year!

Classroom Reminders

Please see the map below for a reminder of the new class locations and the entry and exit gates.

Safe parking around schools: Keeping our children safe

The Local Authority would like to remind everyone of the importance of safe parking practices around schools. The area surrounding schools is a busy place, especially during drop-off and pick-up times.

Why Are There Zig-Zag Parking Restrictions?

You may have noticed the zig-zag lines painted on the road near school entrances. These markings are not just decorative; they serve a crucial purpose:

Enhanced Visibility: Zig-zag lines are designed to keep the area around school gates clear of parked vehicles, ensuring that children, parents, and motorists have a clear line of sight. This is especially important for young children who might not be easily visible behind parked cars.

Safety of Pedestrians: When vehicles are not parked near the school entrance, children can safely cross the road without the risk of stepping out from behind a parked car and into the path of oncoming traffic.

Smooth Traffic Flow: Clear zig-zag zones help to avoid congestion and ensure that traffic flows smoothly during the busiest times of the school day. This reduces the likelihood of accidents and ensures emergency vehicles can access the school if necessary.

Legal Requirements: Parking on zig-zag lines is illegal and can result in fines and penalties. These restrictions are put in place by local authorities specifically to protect our children.

How You Can Help

We all play a part in keeping our school environment safe. Here are some ways you can contribute:

Respect Parking Restrictions: Always avoid parking on zig-zag lines, even if you are just stopping for a moment. The few extra steps from a legal parking spot can make a significant difference in safety.

Encourage Walking or Cycling: If possible, encourage your children to walk or cycle to school. This reduces the number of cars around the school and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

Be Patient and Courteous: School drop-off and pick-up times can be stressful. Patience and courtesy go a long way in ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone.

By working together and respecting parking restrictions, we can create a safer environment for children. Let’s make sure that our students can arrive at and leave school safely each day. Your cooperation and support are greatly appreciated.

Laptop Donation

This week we were delighted to take delivery of a generous donation from local business Croda. They kindly sent the school 40 laptops which will make a huge difference to the school. A big thank you to the two Croda employees Matt Eastwood (left) and Will Coxon (right) who delivered them to us.

Vilte, Eliza and Caeleb from Year 6 with some of the donated laptops.

Parkside Planets

We are extremely proud of Caeleb, Edis, Joshua and Charlie who spent their summer serving the local community. Taking part in the Humberside Police Lifestyle Challenge, they helped the local environment through litter picking and went on to help local people by collecting donations for the Two Rivers community food bank.

Their efforts have been recognised by featuring in the Goole Times and also on the Humberside Police and Two Rivers social media channels.

A huge well done to the team for making a difference and we are sure you have inspired others to the same.

Important - no nut products

We have members of the school community with severe allergies. Coming in to contact with nuts or nut products can cause a life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Please can all parents and carers ensure that they do not send any items in pack ups and snack boxes that contain nuts or nut products. This includes Nutella, peanut butter and any other spreads containing nuts, as well as cereal bars with nuts etc. Please check ingredient lists carefully.

Thank you for helping to keep everyone in our school community safe.

Donate while you shop

We have signed up to Asda's Cashpot for School scheme, which means we can receive donations every time you shop! Between 2nd September and 30th November 2024, every time customers shop with Asda using their Rewards app, they can choose a primary school to receive a percentage of their spend. And that’s not all — every time a customer chooses Parkside, Asda will donate £1 to our school’s Cashpot.

If you're an Asda shopper and use the rewards app, click on the picture of Joe Wicks on the home screen when you open it up and please choose Parkside as your school to donate to. (If you don't have it already, the app is free to download) Don't worry, it won't be taken out of your rewards, you won't lose out and the school will gain!

Smartphone advice

Smartphone advice - EE tells parents: don't give under-11s smartphones

One of the UK's largest mobile network providers is advising parents not to give primary school-aged children their own smartphone.

EE, which is owned by BT, said it aims to improve children's "digital wellbeing" after receiving increasing requests for guidance from parents.

It said that under-11s should be given "non-smart" devices that have similar capabilities as old brick phones.

The recommendation - announced for the start of the new school year - comes amid growing concern about the effects of smartphone and internet usage on children's mental health and behaviour.

We would like to draw your attention to the section about earrings. Our policy states that earrings must be completely removed for PE lessons. Children will not be permitted to use these whilst wearing earrings.

Jumpers, cardigans and book bags can be purchased from school on ParentPay in the usual way. The office will be open between 8.00am and 2.00pm on Friday 30th August for you to collect any items ordered.

PE kit can be bought from the Uniform Shop on Pasture Road. (Just a reminder that Reception children do not usually start PE sessions until after Christmas, so there is no rush to purchase for those children.)

School meals increase
