Excursions
Taking inspiration to new heights
Gunnedah High School students saw high-flying inspiration in action at an Aussie FMX event on Tuesday, 29 October. The Youth Connector event was hosted by Gunnedah Shire Council, sponsored by Boggabri Coal and the NSW Government through the Community Recovery Officer Program.
The show, that features some of Australia’s top freestyle motocross riders including Aussie FMX director and three-time world record holder Brodie Carmichael, encourages kids to pursue their passion with the possibility of turning it into a career.
Riders perform tricks from a ramp, but also engage with a young audience about their hopes and dreams.
The performers in the Aussie FMX show not only showcase an extraordinary degree of talent, but they tell their own stories, and connect with students who might be becoming disengaged with their education and their own journey.
The show was held at the Gunnedah Showground and included a sausage sizzle and presentations from youth facilitators about life skills and building positive influences.
Year 12 kicks off with Wellbeing Day
On the first day of Term 4, the new Year 12 cohort had a well-being day focused on prioritising mental health and developing a growth mindset.
Students participated in sessions with Kate from Creating Chances, Angie and Bec from Joblink Plus, Mr Mason, Careers Advisor, and Miss Hyde, Year Advisor. During the 'self-care' session with Angie and Bec, students were asked to mind map what self-care meant to them. Will Mannion and Liam Reid decided to write a rap about self-care (see below).
Joblink Plus were kind enough to donate a barbecue lunch, and a huge thanks goes out to Vinnie and Braith, who cooked it for us.
We would like to thank Kate, Angie, Bec and Mr Mason for taking the time to kick start Year 12 with us!

Lil R on the beat.
Don't be sad, you should be glad,
Livin' a happy life, yeah that's mad.
Can you smell it in the air?
That feeling of self care.
Feeling everything, emotions and all
Doesn't matter if your short, fat or tall.
Be proud of you, be proud of me.
Be proud of who you are tryin' to be.
Self care is important, remember that.
This is the end of it, we'll call it a wrap.
Science: Bringing energy concepts to life
In Term 4, Year 9 Science students have been busy applying their theoretical knowledge of energy transfer to a range of practical opportunities.
Students studied convection currents in a 'Teabag Rocket' experiment and have also used radiant heat to create solar ovens, enjoying a sweet treat of smores as a result.
In the coming weeks students will explore sound, light and the electromagnetic spectrum as part of this topic.

Year 7 has started Term 4 by exploring the topic of Forces in Science. Some of the activities have included analysing the impact of force on plasticine crash test dummies and trying to reduce this impact by using makeshift seat belts.Students have enjoyed playing games such as tumbling towers that rely on balanced and unbalanced forces.
A favourite so far has been the experiment Kamikaze Egg, where students designed a package to reduce the force of the egg being dropped. There was lots of anticipation as the wide range of inventive egg parcels were dropped from the second storey onto the cement below to see whose egg survived. Some eggs were luckier than others!
Did you know...
The greatest height fresh eggs have been dropped from without breaking is 213m. This was achieved in 1994 by David Donoghue when he dropped the eggs from a helicopter after he studied the science of the “bouncing bombs” – used in the famous World War II Dambusters raid in Germany in 1943 – to perfect the angle and speed of his drops.

PCYC Work Ready Program
Gunnedah High School Year 9 and 10 students participated in the PCYC Work Ready Program last week. The program provided the students with the opportunity to gain accreditation for their White Card and First Aid.
Students also developed skills to support their job search journey and completed their own resumes.
Congratulations to all students for their accomplishments – your resilience and hard work paid off. Special thanks to Miss Winsor, Ms Wales, Kaz F, Mrs Torrens and Mr Mason for assisting the students throughout the program.

NECA Electrical Apprenticeships is for young women too!
NECA Training & Apprenticeships are into their recruitment period again for our next intake in January 2025.
The apprenticeship is paid full-time employment with one day per week of study and four days working on the tools with one of our many host companies. Although, the entry age is 15 years, your maths must be strong at the Year 10 level including Pythagoras and the trig ratios, but it is helpful for apprentices to have their red Ps to begin their career in the electrical industry.
After the four-year apprenticeship, while being paid to learn, you can work in one of the world’s most dynamic industries, start your own business, use it as a stepping stone to Project Management, an electrical engineering degree, further specialisation, or take your electrical license and work in the UK, USA or NZ.

SBAT opportunity
The Department of Customer Service (DCS) is offering school-based traineeships (SBAT) to Aboriginal high school students across NSW.
An SBAT is an education and employment pathway that gives students in Year 10 paid employment, industry experience and a nationally recognised qualification while they complete secondary school.
Trainees will work in administration and support services at DCS. Their work will support their TAFE studies, so trainees will get both practical and theoretical experience.
Interested?
Parents: Call Mr Mason on 0403 705 944 or email robert.mason18@det.nsw.edu.au
Students: See Maso in the Careers room, email, or leave a note at the front office.
