Whitkirk News! 20th September 2024

A message from Miss Quarmby

Hello! We have definitely loved the sunshine this week. It's been lovely to be outside at lunchtimes watching children enjoying the warm weather and playing games. KS1 children have become experts at the playground marking dance mats. I've also loved going into Reception to see them practising writing their names, and right the way throughout school I've seen some exceptional writing - a special mention has got to go to Miss Hickman's class who truly did amaze me with their versions of Edward the Emu.

On Monday 23rd September, Leeds School Nursing will be administering the flu immunisations for those children who have parent/carer consent. For those that missed the consent deadline, the nursing team will provide advice on other settings available. On Tuesday, we have a photographer in school who will be taking pictures for our website. We know which parents have not consented to this and these children will not be in the pictures. We would kindly ask that all children are dressed super smartly as always in their full school uniform.

Next week, I will share with you our dates for the academic year (Harvest, Christmas, Sports Day etc.), and then in a couple of weeks, class teachers will share all of the exciting trips and visits that your children are going on this year. I hope you have a fab weekend and I'll see you on Monday.

Attendance

This week, finishing in first place with 100% are RJS and 1LR! In second place are 1JL, with 99.4% and in third place are 2CH, with 98.85%.

A shout out also goes to 3RD, 3JC, 6NT and 5/6AR, who have also finished the week above our school target of 96.5%

The whole school attendance this week is 97.11%: can we beat this next week? The only way to do that is if we all come to school as often as we can.

Please remember look at the NHS guide Is my child too ill for school? - NHS (www.nhs.uk)

Let's take a look AT WHAT'S BEEN GOING ON THIS WEEK

EYFS

This week in reception, we started ' Sqiggle Whist you Wriggle' sessions! 'Squiggle whilst you wriggle' incorporates dance, music and large movements to help children develop the fine motor control they need for writing! The children have loved using ribbon and material to practise large movements up, down, side to side and crossing over and then exploring using pens in both hands to make the same movements! We cannot wait to see how this helps the children's early mark making and writing!

Key Stage 1

What phenomenal Mathematicians Year 1 have been this week! We have been working hard to solve a range of addition number problems, some even involving 2 steps. Year 1 are beginning to develop their use of technology to practise arithmetic skills by using the iPads in daily provision. In our wider curriculum, Year 1 have been building on their drawing skills by practising precise line patterns inspired by William H Johnson. We can’t wait for our final outcomes in Art!

This week in Year 2, we have been placing numbers on a number line to 100 in Maths. We have created our own animations on 'I can animate' in computing and we have finished our first draft of our very own narratives based on 'Edward the Emu'. Miss Dougan and Miss Hickman couldn't be prouder of the authors Year 2 are becoming.

Lower Key Stage 2

What a fantastic week it has been in Year 3! In English, we have written superb character descriptions of Iron Man, using expanded noun phrases, commas in a list and similes. In Maths, we have been exploring place value in numbers to 1000. In Science, we learnt about the functions of skeletons and in Art, we showed line and tone using different pencil types. Well done, Year 3!

In our Science lesson this week, Year 4 made a model of the digestive system using bread, water, milk and tights! Although slightly disgusting, the Year 4s loved replicating the digestive process and can tell you about every step!

Upper Key Stage 2

Year 5 have been amazing us all with their incredible reading skills! In Reading lessons, we have been building our fluency using a text about a satellite up in space. Using our retrieval skills, we have pulled out key information to understand 'A day in the life of the satellite'. Alongside this, we have been reading our class text - Cosmic by Frankie Cottrell Boyce. We are absolutely loving it and can't wait to find out what happens each day!

Year 6 have had a fantastic week! We have begun writing our narratives, based on 'Ruin', which explores the adventures of a lone survivor following an apocalypse. Mr Sadler and Miss Tomlinson have been blown away with some of the outstanding sentences and vocabulary that have been used! We are also loving learning all about the heart! In Science, we created models of the heart and learnt about the blood flow through the different parts! Well done Year 6 on another great week!
