FEBRUARY REGATTA RECAPS
SCOR @ CoC
Over the weekend, Erin McDonagh (‘28), Charlie Herrick (‘26), Carmen Lineer (‘26), Catherine Dickson (‘28), Sydney Mandel (‘26), Roman Dentice-Cagle (‘28), and Carter Harms (‘27), competed in the Southern Collegiate Offshore Regatta (SCOR), hosted by the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. Wisconsin competed in the J/105 fleet on Grey Matter, owned by Scott Herman, with safety officer Nick Ellyn. It was a great event and the team worked well despite never having sailed together before! The team arrived in Charleston on Friday morning and stopped for a wonderful breakfast at Acme Lowcountry Kitchen. After that, they headed to Carolina Yacht Club for a productive practice day. The team worked on boat handling while figuring out how to sail in the strong Charleston current.
Five great races were sailed on Saturday in a steady 6-10 knot easterly breeze. The team improved greatly throughout the day, with a top score of 4 out of 12. The afterguard rapidly improved their ability to navigate current. After racing, Carolina Yacht Club hosted a great dinner and the Badgers were able to mingle with lots of their friends from other teams.
Heavy winds and storms were forecast for Sunday, so the race committee opted for a mid-distance race. After a tough start, the Badgers were able to get back into the mix following the second mark rounding. This was a tough race but the team stayed focused and finished in 6th. Wisconsin ended the regatta in 5th place overall after winning the tie-breaker with Princeton.
SCOR was a ton of fun and it wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity and dedication of the College of Charleston, Carolina Yacht Club, host and boat owner Scott Herman, safety officer Nick Ellyn, the race committee, and all the volunteers who worked hard to make this event happen. Thank you to everyone involved! We look forward to heading back to Charleston next year!
SAILOR OF THE MONTH
Carter Harms
Our sailor of the month is Carter Harms! Carter is a Junior skipper and crew from Madison, WI, majoring in Mechanical Engineering.
Carter started sailing Optis at Hoofers as a kid. Over the years, he learned to sail scows and dinghies out on Lake Mendota. After joining Wisco sailing, he switched to 420s and keelboats, which he continues to sail to this day. This past summer, Carter served as the head of the Hoofers Sailing Youth program, passing on his love of sailing to the next generation.
Last season, Carter got to sail with the team at the West Coast Championships in San Diego hosted by SDSU. He notes that he "had a great time sailing on the west coast and getting to spend time with teams we don't usually see." In addition to WCC, Carter's season highlights were Skippering for Indiana University at Fall Fury and sailing at IOR in New York. Since the spring season began this February, he has attended both SCOR in Charleston and Nelson Roltsch in New Orleans.
As one of our Regatta Coordinators, Carter's hard work and planning has enabled us to host and compete throughout the entire academic year. We wouldn’t be on the start line without his hard work behind the scenes!
Carter brings a positive attitude wherever he goes, whether it's board meetings, early-morning regattas, or practice. We are so proud to have him on our team.
Go Go Carter!
