Our Intent at Swinton Queen
Through Science, we provide our children with the opportunity to discover, explore and understand the natural phenomena that underpins our world.
We aim to stimulate a child’s curiosity in finding out how and why things happen in the way they do, through the methods of inquiry and investigation.
We teach our children that science changes as our understanding and experiences change. This is an ongoing process as humanity's ideas about the world are constantly analysed, revised, developed and evaluated.
It is our intent that science assists our pupils to appreciate the way the subject will affect their future on a personal and national stage, but also as Global Citizens.
- ask and answer scientific questions;
- develop skills, which may not be developed to the same degree in other areas of the curriculum;
- plan and carry out scientific investigations, using equipment, including computers, correctly;
- know and understand the life processes of living things;
- know and understand the physical processes of materials, electricity, light, sound and natural forces;
- know about the nature of the solar system, including the earth;
- and evaluate evidence and present their conclusions clearly and accurately.
Our Implementation at Swinton Queen.
We plan for Science using the National Curriculum objectives to ensure a thorough approach. These themes are ordered in a way which is progressive and ensures a depth of understanding. These form the building blocks of progress in terms of knowledge, skills and understanding as the children move through school.
Within each unit of work, we ensure a thorough coverage of inquiry and investigative skills are achieved using an inquiry-based question. This allows our children to apply their knowledge and understanding in a real-world capacity in order to embed their learning.
SEND
We support our SEND children in the following ways:
- Word mats could be used to support the subject- widget could be used for this- this needs to be something to implement moving forward.
- We make Science practical to support all- its a subject where we can use concrete and pictoral resources
- We use mixed ability pairings or groupings to support all- peer support rather than adult support.
- We use different methods of recording ideas and learning, it’s not all about writing things down- lots of opportunities to discuss, explore and use visuals
- We use the re-engage to go over previous learning and revisit it. We also use it to over learn key bits of information- the most important information to retain- info that is key for SEND children to take away from the unit
- Our lessons build on from proir knowledge
- As a school we use icons and duel coding on PowerPoints to support learning- more visuals (Widget) could perhaps be used to support SEND learners in this subject.
