KHARKIV HOUSING CHALLENGE Design Competition

This modular housing solution uses existing or new concrete panels with a terracotta rainscreen system. This system allows for insulation to be added to the exterior of entire buildings, especially helpful in areas that are undamaged by the war but require improvements to the thermal quality of the building. New concrete panels will consist of fly ash, a coal byproduct that improves the durability of concrete while preventing the toxic material from entering the environment. It will be poured directly on site as assembled using multi-story tilt-up construction technology. The rainscreen system will then be added which features colorful textured terracotta panels. There are three main types of modular systems which vary in form and usage. These can be utilized to replace balconies or to replace entire sections of the facade. These playful forms and finishes will be a lovely contrast to the soviet-style architecture that has been typical in this area for decades.

This design also features improvements to the public space and safety of the neighborhood. A plaza is located at the main bus stop, consisting of park benches, bike storage, and sheltered seating while people wait for their bus. The bomb shelter is interwoven with this central public space. The massive underground bomb shelter exists below the public space under thick concrete vaulted ceilings. It contains a main sleeping/ gathering area, bathrooms, dining and kitchen, offices, and storage. This underground space is accessed by two sheltered stairwells on both sides of the intersection. The shelter can be used as an event space to host festivals and community gatherings during peaceful times.

This modular concept and public space design concept is applicable to the rest of the buildings and spaces. The damaged portion of any building can utilize this concept and the modular forms presented in block 92. The formwork and simple tilt-up construction makes this appropriate for repairing any type of building in Kharkiv. The concept of merging public space with protective architecture can be applied in pockets all over the neighborhood. The underground area can be as small or large as conditions allow.
