Interesting Facts

  • The most expensive military drone is the US-made MQ 9 Reaper, which costs around 14 million.
  • Drones are used not only for military purposes, but also to help the police fight crime.
  • Drones are used for humanitarian causes as well, such as delivering food and aid to remote areas.

Drone Careers

Flying Drones

Naturally, the first drone-related job that is likely to enter your thoughts is that of flying them. In an industrial/commercial setting however, it’s not so simple as picking up the controls and taking flight. Depending on where you are working, you’ll need a license or certification. In the US you’ll need a Remote Pilot Certificate and will require a thorough understanding of FAA rules.

Keep in mind being a drone pilot isn't only about flying. You’ll also need to consider the type of job the drone will be tasked with. Meaning you will need additional distinct skills and knowledge that apply to the task.

A few jobs drones may be used for are:

  • Aerial photography
  • Surveying
  • Monitoring
  • Inspecting
  • Delivering

Building & Developing Drones

Most drone careers will fall into the building and development of drones. These require a variety of skill sets including aeronautics, robotics, software development, AI and mechanical engineering.

A Few Good Careers

Software Engineers- are in high demand as manufacturers and software developers need software engineers for research and development departments.

Hardware Engineers- manufacturers are in need of hardware engineers which includes electrical , mechanical, and aeronautical engineers to help them make their drones lighter, faster, and more durable.

Sales & Marketing- manufacturers recruit sales and marketing professionals to help them gain as many customers as possible.

Operations- offers plenty of job opportunities such as technicians, inspectors, and warehouse staff.

Management- drone companies require management professionals like project managers and business intelligence analysts.
