Construction Updates: Māngere West Cycling Improvements
Construction of the Māngere West Cycling Improvements is well underway. Our contractors are usually working in two sections at once. This approach helps us deliver the work more quickly by focusing our efforts and means disruption will be limited to one or two sections at a time.
Please note timelines and staging plans are indicative and may change.
Stage One main works is complete
✅ What's completed?
Woodward Road and Kiwi Esplanade
- New street lighting is installed waiting to be connected
Coronation Road (between Hastie Avenue and 146 Coronation Road):
✅ What's completed?
- Installed concrete separators for the new cycleway to safely separate people on bikes from traffic.
Stage Two: main works outside Māngere Bridge School now complete
✅ What's completed?
- A new pedestrian crossing at the corner of Taylor Road and Coronation road outside The Gaff Cafe
- A new shared path for people biking and walking outside Māngere Bridge School
Stage Three works are underway
We’re working at multiple locations at once to complete construction faster and minimise disruption.
✅ What's completed?
- A new raised pedestrian / cycle crossing at the corner of Elmdon Street and Bader Drive.
- A new footpath and two-way cycleway in this section of Bader Drive
In Progress
Location 1: From Black Bridge Reserve (opposite BP station) to Hīnau Road
What we're doing:
- New two-way cycleway
- Footpath upgrades
- Relocating a new bus stop
- Upgrading the intersection at Walmsley Road and McKenzie Road
Location 2: McKenzie Road to Ventura Street, along Bader Drive
What we're doing:
- New two-way cycleway
- Footpath upgrades
- New road markings
- New in-lane bus stop on Mckenzie Road
Location 3: Opposite Māngere College
- To minimise disruption, most of this work has been scheduled during the school holidays. This work is expected to finish in the first week of Term 3 (weather dependent)
Where is construction moving next?
- Next, construction will continue along Bader Drive towards Māngere Town Centre.
- Traffic will still flow both ways along Bader Drive while we work.
- However, when we’re working near the Elmdon Street and Comet Crescent intersections, there will be short detours for drivers turning in or out of these side streets onto Bader Drive.
What we’re building:
- Two-way protected cycleway
- New raised pedestrian and cycle crossing at the corner of Comet Crescent
- Upgrading bus stops
- Improving footpaths
Why we’re doing this:
- To make it safer and easier for people walking and cycling — and to connect the new cycleway to Māngere Town Centre, Moyle Park path, and the SH20 cycleway to the airport.
We understand that construction can be disruptive, particularly around schools and key traffic routes. Traffic may be slower at times, and we truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we carry out this important mahi to improve transport options for our community.
🚧 Dunstall Place Intersection safety measures
We thank you and acknowledge the concerns raised by residents about the Dunstall Place intersection. Your feedback is important, and we want to reassure you that we’re taking these concerns seriously.
In response, Auckland Transport has taken the following steps to improve safety while we await the results of an independent safety review:
- Installed orange flexiposts to guide drivers safely through the lane
- Introduced a 30km/h temporary speed limit to slow down traffic at the intersection
- Fast-tracked an independent Safe System Audit, which is now underway
This independent audit will assess how the new road layout is performing and recommend any changes needed. This is part of the standard process for all new road projects across Tāmaki Makaurau.
We truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to ensure the intersection is safe for everyone. In the meantime, please continue to drive carefully through this area.

🎉 Highlights from Learn to Ride
Over 270 people turned out at Learn to Ride courses in Māngere over the past few months.
Over the past few months, AT held a series of Learn to Ride courses for both adults and kids in Māngere to help prepare people for the new cycling facilities.
It was great to see over 270 attendees across the sessions and see people's confidence and skills on bikes improve. Some adults went from not being able to ride a bike at all, to riding the new cycleway.
We also held courses at Waterlea Primary School and Māngere Bridge School, with 300+ students going through cycle skills training.
Thanks for having your say on the Māngere to Favona Link
Thank you to everyone who shared feedback, visited us at an engagement session and learned more about the Māngere to Favona Link.
Feedback on the consultation was open for four weeks from Monday, May 12. It was wonderful to connect with so many members of the community during our six public engagement sessions and kōrero about the project. A special thanks to the Triple Teez crew for their support during the consultation.
We are currently reviewing the feedback received during the consultation. Once the review is complete, we’ll publish a Public Consultation Feedback Report, summarising feedback from the public and key stakeholders.

🛣️ Streets for People – Coronation Road Update
Construction on Coronation Road, between Ngā Hau Māngere Bridge and Kiwi Esplanade, was originally scheduled to begin in April 2025, but is now set to start later in July 2025.
This work follows the decision in June 2024 to retain and upgrade this section of the trial, which performed well during Trial Phase One (January to March 2024).
What’s changing:
- The planter boxes, bollards, and blue painted lines will be removed and replaced with a permanently extended kerb
- A new “Paired Zebra” crossing will be added near Kiwi Esplanade to prioritise people walking and biking
- New asphalt surfacing
📬 Residents will receive another letter soon with updated construction dates and more information about what to expect.
ℹ️ Please note: The planned construction does not include changes to the Phase Two section of the trial cycleway between Kiwi Esplanade and the Church Road Roundabout.
🚧 Permanent upgrades coming to Māngere East – replacing the 2021 trial pop-up improvements
In 2021, we partnered with the Māngere East community to test temporary street calming features through the Innovating Streets for People programme. These included speed humps, raised crossings, planter boxes, and colourful street art - all designed to create safer, more welcoming spaces for tamariki, kaumātua, and everyone walking or biking.
Thanks to community feedback and positive results, permanent upgrades are now planned, with construction expected to begin in late 2025.
Improvements will take place along:
- 📍 Yates Road
- 📍 Ferguson Street
- 📍 Royton Avenue
- 📍 Parts of Chalfont Street and Chadwick Crescent
🚏 Heads-Up: Proposed Bus Break Stop on Court Town Close
🚏 Heads-Up: Proposed Bus Break Stop on Court Town Close
We’re proposing to install a new bus break stop on Court Town Close to support better public transport access in Māngere. This is an early heads-up notice — more information will be shared soon, and residents will be informed with full details as the proposal progresses.
