Yuba Water Agency's plant mechanic, Tim Bowles, is responsible for preventative maintenance, inspections and service to various equipment and systems related to the agency's hydroelectric power generation facilities. Scroll to learn more about Tim, his background and what he enjoys in his free time.

What is your background/formal education that led to where you are in your career today?

I’m a longtime resident of the area and have lived in Yuba, Sutter and Butte counties for most of my life. A lot of the hydro education I received came from working at Yuba Water, be it from past or present coworkers and trades. I also attended a plant mechanic training program and other classes that included machining and tig welding.

How did you get involved in your current career path?

Before Yuba Water, I worked in the private sector doing construction. Around 2010, I had an opportunity to work for the agency as a seasonal/temp employee, helping out the maintenance department. Being exposed to the project, its facilities and employees, I knew it was something I’d like to be part of. That led me to a utility position and eventually plant mechanic.

Do your duties differ throughout the year? And if so, how?

Yes, we have scheduled maintenance outages on the hydroelectric generators throughout the year. At that time, we can inspect, service, repair or upgrade systems and equipment that are not accessible while they're running.

What do you enjoy most about working for Yuba Water Agency?

I think it’s mostly the people and working with them to accomplish tasks, solve problems and keep things moving forward.

Tell us an unusual story or experience you’ve had while working for Yuba Water Agency.

One recent experience that comes to mind involved some testing at New Bullards Bar Dam. The work required access to the downstream face of the dam where we had to use a man basket and crane. It was quite the view!

What do you like to do in your free time?

Spending time with family is a big one for me. We try and get outdoors as much as possible. Whether that's camping, exploring new areas or fishing trips to the coast when Mother Nature allows for it.
