RISE UP For High Seas Protection Advocating for swift ratification of the High Seas Treaty

BACKGROUND - RISE UP LETTER ACTION - SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS - SOCIAL MEDIA TILES - SIGN THE PETITION

BACKGROUND

On 4 March 2023, after almost two decades of discussion, including five years of negotiations, the world’s governments finalized the text of a new United Nations (UN) Treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ), under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

After the text was legally “scrubbed” and translated into the six official UN languages, the final Treaty text was formally adopted by Member States at the UN in New York on 19 June 2023.

We now need 60 countries to ratify the Treaty for it to enter into force!

For the Treaty to become international law, it must be signed and ratified by at least 60 countries. The 60th country to ratify will trigger a 120-day countdown, after which the Treaty will enter into force.

Once it becomes law, the new High Seas Treaty can be used to address many of the governance gaps that have plagued the ocean by setting out clearer ways to conserve biodiversity in the High Seas.

As countries have the opportunity to ratify the Treaty over the coming months, it is critical that supporters RISE UP at key moments and call on world leaders to urgently support the implementation of an ambitious High Seas Treaty that will safeguard half the planet, for the sake of the ocean, the planet, and all of us.

Please use this toolkit to urge Governments to RISE UP for High Seas protection. The #RaceForRatification is on!

RISE UP LETTER ACTION

We are thrilled to inform you that the new High Seas Treaty opens for countries' signatures on the 20th September 2023. This milestone is a testament to our shared commitment to safeguarding our ocean. The crucial next step is to ensure that at least 60 countries sign and ratify the treaty.

To achieve this, we urge you, as a concerned RISE UP network member, to take action by writing a personalized letter to your respective Foreign Minister encouraging swift ratification of the High Seas Treaty.

By voicing our support for the High Seas and advocating for swift ratification of the High Seas Treaty, we have the power to bolster its influence and create a lasting, positive impact on marine conservation.
